Berber Exploitation (1997): A look at how the culture of the Berbers has been exploited and suffocated.
Subscribe to Journeyman here: kzfaq.info_c...
For centuries the Berbers of Morocco have been persecuted by their Arab masters. Today even their festivals have been hijacked. Miriam is fighting to keep her language and culture, whilst fellow militant Zaid claims the Arabs have 'stolen our history.' Etched out of a beautiful, yet inhospitable and rugged land, stands Imichil, where the annual marriage market or Moussem des Fiances takes Place. It's here that the Arab government has turned an exclusive Berber celebration into a tourist fest. Shy young brides wander around the market in traditional veils as streetwise city slickers sell trinkets and souvenirs to dollar laden foreigners. The Arabs have encouraged the press to come and soak up the traditional atmosphere It's turned into objects of curiosity in the process. Hussein and his wife to be, were forced to attend the festival in order to obtain a marriage certificate. Fascinating look at a culture being silenced and yet exploited for its rich and colourful traditions.

i think you need to go travel around Morocco and see more of life in Morocco!! Berber history and culture is not being destroyed. unless you call swapping donkeys for cars too much change from tradition lol! i know even Berber who still wont buy washing machine they are so traditional about keeping to tradition. and i live out in the mountains and deserts with different Berber tribes...they need socks and warm clothes and encouragement to let their children go to school until they are older than 15 rather than 12 but what else about improving life and understanding do you call destruction of your culture?!!

Prakash Gautam ive been living in Morocco - i first went there with friends who are Arabs lviing in and grown up in cities. then for 10 years ive been living with Berber families in a number of areas. The Berbers dont need to learn anything from the Turks and dont need to learn any of your aggression nor aggressive ideas - there has been much growth and change with Berber languages now becoming used and accepted in more official capacities. The Berber women i know all speak Berber and many have never learned Arabic nor French. Noone has made them not speak in Berber. All the males im with speak Berber and many im with speak at least 3 Berber languages. We are free to travel and associate with who and where we like. So the restrictions that are being said are BS.. Those who say the BErber and their culture are being treated atrociously are listening to history of what happened in the past. Just like saying Colonel Custer is still out shooting Chief Sitting Bull and all the indians...Yes the Arab population tend to be wealther and have more freedom to have passports and live between other countries but much of that is because they were lucky in the early days of Moroccans working and living in France etc. Yes there is stil manyof Arab descent who dont travel much and dont have much to do with Berber culture but it still doesnt mean that the Berber are being killed or held back!!!

King Massinissa A minority? Hahahahahahaha there are much more berbers in the south then in the north. And the southern Berber are the pure berbers. They rarely mixed with other populations. the dna tests showed us already that the purest berbers are the Sousi’s. They score 100% North Africa what is rare, there is no other group that scores 100%. Riffis score 75-80% mixed with romans and iberians. Even me as an Arabized Moroccan scored more then the most rifis with 82%.you should study the history my friend, the north is strongly influenced by other populations in the past. Nobody could enter the big mountains in the south, so they are still pure.

if you depose or dispose of the King say goodbye to your freedom, the Morocco that people live for its liberalness, tolerance, kindness and welcome to regime and law and fighting. Many Moroccans understand why they love their King and are grateful for having him. and to say the Berber are oppressed now is a lie. change has been slow but there has been change and improvements so to look only at the hardships the Berber suffered prior to the present King is unfair and ignorant and dangerous for the potential outcome if to depose him and allow the fundamentalists he keeps from taking over the government.

Moroccan government should give more honor and respect to this land's original inhabitants the Amazigh. They should at least make the government an arab-amazigh one, if not a fully Amazigh one. They have began giving some rights to Amazigh to learn their language at school but still have to do so much more to them, and it is necessary to demand their rights back after they have been stripped away by oppressive Arab colonists and settlers, who by the way call themselves "Muslims"! The amazigh (berbers) were in north africa for thousands of years. Even people oppresed in one area can be oppresive in another. Jews in Israel some of whom oppress arabs and yet arabs oppress amazigh (true name for berbers) also there are tribes in sub saharan africa that oppress each other ie coastal tribes fulani vs. interior tribes. I hope people cut it out before we get into the war to end it all and then, hopefully a new version of us without the bad part will come around.

Lakenya nice try, South, East and West Africans have never been Imazighen "Berbers" they don't speak the language and they don't even call themselves Imazighen! Even worse Imazighen (berbers) have their dna which is the E1b1b (Y dna) there are no black Africans that carry such dna other than the brown, yellow and white Berbers of North Africa, the only ones outside of North Africa that carry such dna are the Somalians and they only carry about 40% which simply means that it's not their dna, it's North African dna! There has also been a skeleton found a while back in current Lybia which was dated 30 to 40.000 years old and his dna was E1b1b (Berber dna). Next time you say something stupid, let us reply back to you! Instead of closing the comment!!

Lakenya Monfort North Africa is Berber territory, the Berbers which are brown, yellow and white are the only ones on Earth with the E1b1b Y-dna and they all live in North Africa, they are indigenous to North Africa. There was even a skeleton found in current day Libya that carried that dna which was dated 30 to 40.000years old! The only ones outside of North Africa that have that dna in very small amounts are the Somalians! It's 100% North African dna otherwise East, West and South Africans would have had larger amounts than the North Africans! By the way, Ramses the great was also proven to have had the Berber dna. Middle Eastern people have never been black, Israelites came from the Middle East traveled to North Africa and beyond through Egypt, so they weren't black either. Imhoteb lived at the time of Joseph and Jacob aka Israel, Joseph worked with Imhoteb Egyptians are as Egyptian now as they used to be back then, the evidence is everywhere. Unless you are emotionally blinded and your eyes are filled with bullshit. Worst of all, the man that came claiming that Israelites and Egyptians were black, was a white man with an agenda and his bullshit was direct especially towards American niggas. Once a slave, always a slave. He added, that Americans niggas started slavery and you idiots even believe that! Clueless, naive, emotional, domesticated, obedient American niggas!

Same here. I sincerely hope that there is a cultural revival like the indigenous Egyptians and Nubians as well. I hate cultural suppression and forcible assimilation of any people. I have a very small amount got North African (Which I assume is most likely something Amazigh/Tuareg or Fulani)in my Ancestry DNA results. I admit that it very small. However without that component no matter how small I would not exist. *Note: I’m absolutely not claiming to be anything I’m not.* I don’t believe in that b.s. I just felt drawn here for some reason. I have been for year a pro Amazigh culture in Morocco. Although I'm an Arab and have been raised in Morocco most of my life. I have learnt to speak some Amazigh words. Many of my closest friends are from Amazigh descendant. When we are together we are Moroccans not Amazigh or Arab. This video does not really tell the real truth. The people that are being interviewed lied at many occasions. The person that made this video is clearly not a good video maker. His french was very bad and his communication skills seemed to be limited. You cannot expose something that is considered as a problem and only speak to one side. You should know, better than I do, that as a journalist or a video maker, you are not supposed to take sides nor influence the answers of the people you are interviewing. With all the respect I owe Miriam, I think that she should be ashamed of herself for making Arabs look so bad. You cannot fight bad with worse. Unless of course your goal is not to expose a problem but to show off on camera for exposure. PS. reading your description of the video, not once you have used the term Amazigh. How can you agree with Miriam that claims that Berber is derived from the world Barbar, and only use Berber instead.

Arab conquest = Colonialism. They did it in both North Africa and the Levant. Jews, Samaritans, Coptics, Amazigh are just few of the native nations and cultures erased by the Arabs who forced their culture, religion, and language and subjugated those who refused to assimilate.

Dear AbdallaEsa, What do you know about Amazigh ppl in Morocco ? what do yu know about their history befor the invasion of North Africa by Arabs? What do you know about the current, and ancient, situation of Amazigh issue ? Amazigh people are subject to discrimination ad racism in the name of the religion and the alleged holiness of Arabic language.Amazigh ppl do have the right to get their rights. The constitution should recognise Amazigh languge and Identity.

Amazigh is the real name of the native population of north africa before the arabs came.Arabs didnt conquer the lands but rather established themselves peacefully. the name Berbers (which is racist btw) however was given to them by the Romans after the Amazigh showed fierce resistance when they invaded north africa. combat leaders such Yogharta, Massinissa and Yohana are famous figure of the resistance. nowadays many Amazigh families strive to name their children after them. hope this helped:)

The Quran is not the only Holy Book. We should be free to follow what ever religion we want. We should not follow one over the other but find balance in all of them. This way you will also stop the fake religious sectarianism.

@Frenchkisssss This is not US propaganda, I'm not sure who's behind "journeymanpictures" but this clearly skewed version of events has nothing to do with the State Department's line about Morocco. In fact, Morocco is considered the most firm and important US ally in North Africa and the two countries have been cooperating for generations. While the US government does have a lot of corrupt people in high ranking positions, it's counter-productive to accuse it of more evils than it actually does.

Anyways MaghribiArab , I have no reason to be biased, I am not Berber, I am Half Afghan and Half Syrian, my mother is an 3arab woman who's family originated from Aleppo. My father is a Pashtun from a place called Ghazni in Afghanistan. I just support the rights of the oppressed, and I am against ethnic chauvinism. Tell me what do you think of what the Janjawaid are doing in Sudan?

The Moroccan Arabs are NOTHING like other Arabs. Go or read about other Arab nations and you will know what I am talking about. Having said that, the truth is that Morocco is made up of 60% Amazighs and the Amazighs ARE the original natives of Morocco. They have forcibly been occupied by the invading Arabs, they live with that fact, they have even become good Mulims, but they are not ready to disappear. I guess it is normal that they demand a recognition of who and what they are? Why should that be a problem? That does not necessarily mean they want to separate from Morocco. After all, THEY are the original people. Where would they want to go? The Jews, who were in Morocco even before it was given the name, and were autochthones with the Amazighs, were never asked by the Amazighs to forget their Jewishness. I daresay that the Jews left Morocco but not because of the Imazighen. It is a historical fact that the Imazighen accepted Jews as equals. And THAT is something NO other nation has done. THAT makes them an extremely special people. To my mind, Moroccan Arabs and Imazighens should equally share beautiful Morocco. Azul, brothers.

Yes I agree, moroccan arabs are not like middle eastern arabs, they should identify as maghrebian, to preserve the moroccan identity and culture.
