Petula Clark really changed the world actually with her art. When she sang she really wanted it to reach the ears of the world. For me as a kid in third grade when “Downtown” was a hit, it kept me sane during a very rough family life. I loved her then and I love her now and I’m so happy she is the person she is. Her art translates universally into beauty and life. I thank her for it

Petula Clark:WHAT A PHENOMENAL CAREER. NO ONE that I can name as this on their CV. Child Star, Superstar Pop Star,Film Star,Star of Las Vagas and Broadway. Songwriter.Musical Theatre Actress. Her UNMATCHABLE voice is a crystal clear, pinpoint accurate with every note. The way she interprits her songs is in just another class of it's own. There is not a type of song that she can not sing. So much so that she can take a classic song by someone else and do her version of it and from then on she totally owns it as well. Petula Clark is THE GREATEST FEMALE VOCALIST OF ALL TIME.

Oh! My! There is not any female singer past or present that I have loved more than Petula Clark. The first time I heard "Down Town" I became a life long fan. There is never a song on any of her albums that I don't like. There is just nothing she cannot sing. I actually got to see her on stage in Las Vegas during the 80's. It was a magical night for me. I had a wonderful seat and I wanted to get up and tell her how special she was, but of course did not do that, just wanted to. I was a little surprised at how tiny she was. I have asked my family to play Down Town at my service when I pass, that is how much I love it. God Bless her! Such talent God gave her, and she used it so wisely.

An awesome lady , the Brits would never let her grow up they loved the little girl in the Huggets and they wanted her to remain that sweet little English rose ,so she went to France to grow up and she became an international singing star around the world , but I dont think we ever forgave her . Its time to recognise her for what she is a singing legend , we have rightly honoured Andrews , Bassey , and Lynn now its time to do the proper thing and add Petula Clark to that list before its too late .

Miss Petula Clark, Wow what a talented, bueatiful, sexy, lady. I first heard her singing, oh possible as early as 64 or 65 there or about. Two older sisters, five cousins in the states, 78lps, 45's , the Am-Fm radios. Her talent was very present, both in Canada @ the USA. Became charmed by her voice then, and still love,- crave it today. Just this morning I watched her tribute too Miss Karen Carpenter, oh how touching, @ loving. So then I found her Interview - documentary, so I just had to watch it. Thank you so very much. Rock @ Sing on "PETULA". God Bless.

In the USA, we had no idea that Petula had already had a successful British career since childhood. To us, she was brand new, and another part of the British Invasion. In fact she was not only far more experienced than the rest of the British performers, she was actually older than them as well.

@@Isleofskyeand Fairly Vague. You're right, she has had a colossal career all over the world, and was part of America's British Invasion of the 60s. In many ways she was the soundtrack to my life (I'm 63 now). When TV re-started after 6 years of WW2 she was one of the very first faces seen on the opening schedule of 1946 - check out the BBC TV story and you'll see her name there, though you may not recognise this young girl! This was the time when the word Television was born. Here she is 75 years later she still tours and records her own freshly-written songs.

What a remarkable life. Though obviously she still has her fans, she has been largely forgotten by 2018. Clearly her life stands on it's own merits and nobody is super-famous forever. She comes across as a very well adjusted & down to earth person. It's perhaps this lack of a wounded soul & the ensuing drama & pathos that makes for a less spectacularly tragic legacy, but certainly a much happier personal life for her. A life well-lived is it's own reward and needs not public validation.

Astonishing. As a 60+ yr old American, amateur musician, growing up with top 40 radio, and later, becoming a Broadway musical fan, living in NYC for 30 years, I was well aware of her diverse talents. And I am truly a Tony Hatch fan for all his work with PC and other artists, as well as his TV themes ( I also am a British cult TV fan, during the Lew Grade/Gerry Anderson, etc. era). To me, Tony is another Burt BACHARACH, Jimmy Webb, Laura Nyro. But I had no idea.... NO IDEA...that before PC hit us, she was a veteran seasoned professional already a star of TV, screen etc. No clue. Wonderful show.

I get the feeling Petula is a very private person who fights to be 'the star' that people expect to see, but absolutely loves to get home, kick off her heels and be a real human being again. But the fact that all her life she has done this amazing act is testament to her extraordinary strength. I really feel that she has traded so much to bring her beautiful music to people that if anyone deserves her incredible life of success it is her. What an incredible lady, and although while very young she became an international celebrity, favoured particularly by European viewers and listeners, Britain - and especially Wales - will always feel immensely proud of their most lovely daughter. And christ-on-a-bike, what a voice!!!

The first time I heard 'Downtown' I fell in love with the song, it was just around the time of Expo '67 in Montreal and I lived in Montreal, a teenager who had just witnessed the Beatles performing Live at the Montreal Forum in 1964. Downtown, fit perfectly into the mood of the day and the times. So I took interest in Petula Clark from a distance, and then she came out with more and more hits, which I loved, and suddenly times and mood changes, no hits from Petula, other interests, she faded away. She wasn't lost on me though, and I find myself oddly enough, gravitating towards her again and again through the years wanting to hear her sing one of her songs, and then all of the memories start rushing back in, of the era of my youth. Today as an adult, and older man, I still gravitate to her vocal signature. She's hearty in her delivery and impressionistic in her story telling. I do play her songs, and likely will play a few of hers again tonight. Love you Petula Clark, you're an inspiration to us all.

This is a great song, I'd hear it a lot in the late 70s in Springfield, MA!

Strange how people put Dusty and Cilla in the same sentence...no comparison.

Thanks Dave, we had a lot of fun making that album and John Bromley's lyrics were great too.

My head of year who we called HM was a complete utter fan and when he played certain songs in assembly in the mornings would give us the clue as to what type of mood he was in ...Brentside high what a brilliant place xx

The best music to have in the background while living. I want to thank her and all the others who made life magical with their music.

As far as going downtown, years ago it was so much fun to get dressed up to just go shopping at stores, and smaller fun shops, even the five and dime, and get lunch, or in the evening to a good movie and dinner, or to a concert or play or go dancing and get an ice cream. We used to be able to go window shopping, and just look at the new styles of clothes, but not buy. Some cities have peaceful places, such as parks that are safe where you can stroll. In Salt Lake City, we have Temple Square with all of the pretty flowers, trees, fountains, pools, statues, visitors centers, and sometimes very uplifting concerts and plays. And there are four places to eat, from casual soup, salad and sandwiches at the “Nauvoo Cafe” to a very nice place called “The Roof” on top of the Joseph Smith Memorial Building. I think you need a reservation, There are other special activities and places there too. Up on top is also “The Garden” to eat at, and a building or two away is the Lion House Pantry where you can get very nice food, served cafeteria style...I got prime rib one Christmas. During the day, there is the Family History Library, the Church Museum, the Church History Library....and you could spend a full day or two and not see or do everything. At different times of the year, there are three places for concerts, and a theater for special productions. puls there is a theater to go to learn more about The Church and the gospel.
