Awesome - great story. My first vintage bike and French bike was my Dad’s Motobecane - it always hung in his garage and I finally one day had the nerve to ask for it. That is what led me down the vintage bike “path”!

I’m 67 now and I had it since the 80’s. I ride it all over and it’s more than what I need. The bike just glides.

I built a Trek 500 from the same year with Shimano 105 (9 speed). I love the neo-retro builds. I'm not 100% sure because things started to change around that era - but do some research on the bottom bracket threading - if it is French you won't be able to put a regular Shimano BB in there(or any modern BB) - but Velo Orange and a few other companies make threadless options. Also - the spacing is tight on the rear - I was able to put a modern wheel in the Peugeot but I did have to pull it wider. There are some good videos on how to properly spread a steel rear triangle though if you want to take time and do it the right way.

@@TimFitzwater I've already cold opened the rear space (from 120mm to 130mm) and make sure of alignment with strings. Also aligned the dropouts. Thank you for the bottom bracket advice! I didn't have that in mind. I'll check that!

I tried to research the BB's again and could still find nothing about the Carbolite 103 frames(even on Sheldon Brown) - seems like the threadless options would be easiest - I really should take mine apart to find out and give it a rebuild/regrease.

@@gustavoguidor156 there’s another KZfaq channel called “RJ the bike guy” and I done the same exact thing he did in his video on how to cold set the chain stays from 126mm to 130mm using a 12” long 3/8” bolt, a couple washers and nuts. I also built the tools using carriage bolts to check the dropout alignment afterwards. And it worked perfectly on my PH10LE. I also upgraded all components to Shimano 105. They just dropped right in. Lol modern gearset/brakes/700c Mavic cosmos aero rims on a bike from 1989!

@@TimFitzwater They do have slight micro cracks and cracks. The tires do but still holding no dry rot plus the tubes hold air. Rides like a dream. Have to replace two screws the height and low adjustment screws.

@@TimFitzwater unfortunately I missed out on a sweet deal, but I got an even better one. A 1974 Schwin Vasity for $30, and it's mostly original. The front wheel and tire have been replaced, it's missing 3 reflectors, and the seat was replaced. It has a Specialized bottle cage to somewhat match the opaque blue color. I've been working on it all day to bring life back into it. The stem has some bad pitting from rust, but it looks a hell of a lot better now. Most of the chrome throughout the bike is almost back to mirror finish. Couldn't pass up on it for 30 bucks.

Nice! I have a Peugeot with the same paint scheme in blue too - its a cheaper model than this though. I made mine a bit of a gravel bike also with flat bars though - just to do something different. Yeah - old French bikes can be a pain in the ass to upgrade - different BB too.

I just read the Wikipedia page on Follis - somehow wasn’t familiar with them - and I’m a pretty big Francophile! I see they were made in Lyon and I spent a couple days there and loved that city - actually saw an awesome Peugeot there in a shop window with the coolest chainring ever. What city are you from? Nice! (except for them getting stolen of course). I had a Puch Alpina - it was beautiful and had a full Shimano 600 groupset. I just wasn't riding it and it wasn't sentimental like my Peugeot has become so I sold it to a friend. Definitely need multiple bikes in NorthEast Ohio too. I needed my studded tires for most of the winter!

Ha-for sure! Your definition of "cheap" will come into play with Italian bikes - its kind of the reason I don't have one. I've always wondered why the Italian brands didn't jump on the 70s bike boom. There really isn't a cheap Colnago. It seems eventually that Bianchi did start making more run of the mill bikes(still do) but the rest of the brands for the most part stuck with the high end. I've always likened Colnago's(which I would love to own) to Leica cameras - anyone who bought one knows they bought one and they are extremely rare as cheap garage sale or flea market finds....

I'm sure the British say Pugot but the French don't.... Center pulls are nice when dealing with fenders too - but I hate adjusting them! Yeah - work stands - even cheap ones are awesome - I put a second home made one by my back door for quick clean up and lubing.

@@TimFitzwater The "K" is for Katakura, the "S" is for pre 75 (71-73), I think an "I", not a 1, is next representing last digit of year so it's 71, then the 4 represents month with January being 1, February 2 and so on until December being L. Last 4 digits are manufacturing or frame number of that month and year. So it's the 9,010 frame produced in April of 1971, manufactured in Katakura, sold by American Eagle in the USA. I'm pretty sure that is right. I found a Nishiki data base like you mentioned.

I'm a little annoyed with myself because I lost that scrapper's phone number somehow....but I did get three bikes for a total of less than 100 bucks before I did!

There wouldn't be any Shimano originally on a bike like this as Peugeot only used French parts back then. Simplex, Huret etc. Depending on the year it could be switched for that though - just look out because French threading is different. ITs not too heavy for climbing or group rides - it is just on the heavier side compared to expensive race bikes. No one is ever dropping me when I ride this.

So the 103 is the steel it is made out of and not the name of the bike. They aren't worth a bunch but they are fun to ride.

@@tk3realtalk265 Peugeots can be a bit tough because they rarely have names on them. I Google the old catalogs. The used that steel mostly in the early 80s.

I definitely agree with the "sexy" - I think it looks very cool - especially when the colors really match. It still seems weird to me that bar tape that isn't comfortable or grippy would be popular. Then again everyone was also riding on ridiculously skinny tires back then!

@@TimFitzwater I'm sure to some extent, it fell under the "manly" umbrella that cast it shadow over many things back then. I remember it as a time when we were denied water during August football practices, to "toughen" us, and I road with people who didn't carry a water bottle for the same reason. They sold them in the US with 27 inch and Europe with 700c - either should work because they are so close - you just need to make sure the brakes you buy align with the rims. I've converted a number of bikes from 27 to 700 with no trouble.

@@TimFitzwater Yes I have, he did a great job restoring it, all things considered. I was fortunate to find one in extremely good condition, all original, even tyres, brand new original clipped pedals, original groupset etc. Only replaced the brake blocks as the original ones were petrified. I have to admit that it wasn't cheap. For whatever reason all Peugeots maintained in very good condition fetch a pretty penny regardless of model.

@@cosinus_square Bikes are interesting in that way - since a large amount of people like to ride but don't know anything about them. I think the general public think of "Peugeot" as cool and French and don't realize they made high end race bikes, to nearly the cheapest/heavy things possible and everything else in between. I guess it would be like "Fender" to people who don't know about guitars. There are $150 Fenders & $1500 Fenders.

However saying that Peugeots are cheap low quality bikes (like a comment below) is like saying today that all carbon bikes with proprietary parts and press fit bottom brackets are scrap, because they crack easily and the bb's are constantly creaking. You got what you paid for back then and you get what you pay for now. One thing is certain though, Peugeots are and will be cool bikes.

The are 32mm Panaracers - but I’m not at home now and can’t remember the specific ones exactly (will add that info when I get back). Peugeot made a number of models out of their Carbolite 103 tubing - I believe they were all early 80s. Great ride quality even if it is a bit heavier than Reynolds.

Yes - with a sandbag for counter balance. The clamp is a Manfrotto one - not sure exactly what they are called. Never clamp down tight on a top tube though - if they are butted that is their weakest point. I have t by the door now for quick Winter cleaning. I'm lucky I have a floor drain down there.

Great story. I don't even have a modern road bike - I prefer to ride my "gravel bike" more these days. Our roads aren't that nice - much better to hit cracks and potholes with some wider tires.

When sold for the US market they usually out 27 inch rims on them - that’s what these are. Only true race bikes would usually get the 700c’s

It is a dark maroon. 86 maybe. I got it free as scrap with no wheels. I modded it to a commuter. Turned downtube levers into cable stops, went triple cranks, original front deraileur still worked! Used commuter bars & old Schwinn Weinman brake levers. I confess to obsessing on the build a couple years long ago.. But no regrets. Yours looks great! I will try to send a picture soon. Watch for rust! Put some rust killer in your tubes!

That era is actually French threaded. At some point they did switch to English - mid-80s? Most you find will be French though.

Velo Orange has press for bottom brackets that will work and actual French threaded ones. Check those options out!

The "Course" is a great bike. I have a couple of those in "3-Tube Reynolds 531". The sizing, and maybe the geometry changed, at least in France, in 1979. Before then, the "3-tube Reynolds 531" Peugeot was the PR-10, which was a great all-around bike. They became the PKN-10 in France in 1979, with new sizing, and new decals

I like to really annoy the purists with that - no intention to change!

French bikes are between 26.2 -26.6 1982 and before. You never know for sure - I had to shim mine with a beer can and I don't have precise enough calipers to really measure it.

The guy was a scrapper just saving a bike from the heap - I couldn’t believe the price either but he didn’t pay anything for it - had a full yard of bikes. He really just wanted someone to be riding it!

This one is probably about 26 lbs. the thing with both Raleigh and Peugeot is they were massive companies that made everything from high end race bikes to department store boat anchors. Also worth thinking about is that a lot of Peugeot’s used French standards that make them hard to upgrade with modern parts - the Raleighs will be way more standard. I love French bikes and have 4 - but they are definitely more of a challenge to deal with.

This is a cheap one as mentioned. What’s good about it is it cost me $35 originally and I put 5000 miles on it. (And it is still goi g strong) I disagree that every 90s bike would be better than every 70s bike. For one / many 90s bikes have no tire clearance- it was the era that they believed super skinny tires were faster(they aren’t ). There are amazing bikes from all eras. Top end steel tubing hadn’t changed all that much from the 70s to the 90s and I’d say the difference between a 70s or 90s Colnago wouldn’t be as much as someone might think.

For Peugeot, it's the geometry. By the mid 70s, the geometry for these bikes had been fine tuned for 70 years or so from input by professional riders training and riding in the Tour de France -- all over France, in all different types of terrain. Even the Carbolite 103 bikes ride very well when they're optimally maintained, or refurbished with higher end components. As the years progressed, bike geometries got more aggressive, until you had weekend warriors trying to mount a time trial bike. If you get an old Peugeot, redo the wheels, put on GOOD tires (25mm or 28mm) with the proper tire pressure, new cables, properly adjusted, and totally tuned up, you will enjoy the ride. I've had over a dozen Peugeots (still have about a dozen) -- from the cheap tubing all the way up to the (real) PX-10s, and PY-10s, and, properly tuned, they all ride wonderfully. However, don't expect much in the way of finish. Peugeots do not have good polish, but of all my bikes (20 or so) from a modern Trek carbon fiber all the way down to a 1966 PX-10, the Peugeots are among my favorites for daily rides. Edited note: all of my vintage bikes were bought in France. They are not the export versions.

I'm not sure if Peugeot had switched to standard threading on their Carbolite frames or if it is still French - I have never taken it apart! (though I obviously should and regrease at this point)

I tried to research it again and I'm still not sure - the safest way to go would be to buy a Phil Wood or Velo Orange threadless one.

@@TimFitzwater lol, Miyata? You mean Miata? That's a Japanese car and I have that too, a 91. It's a Nishiki Olypiad and yes it's made in Japan. I have traced the rear derailleur down to being a Shimano Eagle SS model DE 310 released in 1971. The pulleys are marked with a 333 on them. Dork disk also is marked 333. I'm figuring it's between a 1971-1973 but Shimano came out with the Eagle ll in I think 73, maybe 72.

If there is a serial number on the bottom bracket shell you might be able to get the exact date if someone has a Nishiki database online. I've had/have bikes where the groupset and frames are not the exact same year or even what was shown in the catalog.

I never try to claim this Peugeot has any value - in fact I say that it doesn’t. Peugeot, just like so many French manufacturers, pumped out bikes like crazy during the bike boom era. You are absolutely wrong that they didn’t make nice bikes too though. They made worse bikes than this and they made absolutely top of the line pro bikes. What you are trying to say would be like saying all Fender guitars are garbage- Fender puts their name on many garbage guitars - but has also made many of the most valuable guitars ever. Peugeot has been around since the 1800s and your statement is false. Yes - people think their UO-8’s are cool but they are boat anchors - but if they enjoy them so be it.

That having said and in response to your comment.. I think a companies culture, it's values and approach shines throughout the whole range of products. And my problem with Peugeot is that it clearly stood for lowest possible cost (poorly) produced products in combination with a hip marketing strategy and the uninspired mission of just making figures. I think aiming for low market segments isn't an excuse for making inferior products. You were talking about Fender, I've never owned one.. I do know that I'm very happy with my cheap Gibson ES replica which they produced under their budget brand Epiphone. Great value, can hardly distinguish the sound from the real one and even long time Gibson players love it. That's what I'm talking about, and that's how it should be. And I'm not exaggerating when I say that the list of flaws of Peugeot's is endless. The poor bendable steel, the unforged dropouts on most models, the weird incompatible sizes (25 mm seat posts, slightly narrower '1 inch' forks), the poor paint jobs, the stuck bottom brackets, breaking stems, the plastic dried out simplex derailers, the plastic cable stops on the levers that snap just like that, (And i'm lucky I'm riding in flat Holland, imagine going downhill the Mont Ventoux ;) etc. etc. I can go on and on. And I don't think it matters whether it are cheap low-end Peugeots or PX10's we're talking about.. The quality overall is way too poor and I think Peugeot failed as a bicycle manufacturer in general and their bikes are often dangerous, even when properly maintained. Nothing to celebrate, which of course doesn't mean you can't cherish your Peugeot.. And fair enough, it remains a part of bicycle history, just not a big fan as you've noticed ;) A Peugeot is always bad news and means trouble. 😬

@@vossi6303 I agree you make many valid points and I totally understand where you are coming from- but I still think that from the 60's through the early 80's those statements apply to many(most?) of the bike manufacturers - Gitane, Motobecane, Raleigh, Schwinn etc - it seems like only the Italian companies wouldn't go below a certain level of quality. I have a Gitane Tour de France - (which might as well be a PX-10) and with a decent overhaul is a nice bike - but yeah - you can tell how rushed it was thrown together originally. I have a friend who thinks his Peugeot is the shit - it is junk - but he isn't a bike nerd so I'm not going to rain on his parade. When I bought mine I thought the same thing - but now I know what a light weight Columbus tubing bike with a Campy gruppo feels like.... still - its nice to have something to chain up outside the bar. A "pub bike" as the Brits say. Anyways - Peugeot did have the money to innovate and seems they upped the quality of even the mid/entry level bikes throughout the 80s. ✌
