I just downloaded a 4K scan of a 35mm of this movie (Project 4K99) and the difference is incredible, I don't think any home video format has ever made justice to how the movie looked in cinemas.

It's worth noting that for the 4k we're looking at an SDR capture of an HDR video. So the contrast has been reduced & image darkened. I just checked my copy and the contrast & colours look a lot closer to the previous versions just a bit brighter so don't worry about that when picking up the UHD. Not sure about the laserdisc though looking at the LD & Vhs tapes the capture method appears to leave a lot of detail behind and may be the cause of the crushed blacks.

The sound mix on the Ac3 Ld is my favourite.

I don't know why am I loving the Belgium widescreen VHS! It is giving me more at more cinema feeling than the 4K! Haha

Great comparison videos, but I wish the LD was directly compared one on one with any of the DVDs in the split screen comparisons.

The theatrical cut of the Pod race that’s on the VHS is the superior cut. It’s a travesty that the theatrical cut of the prequels aren’t available, specifically that cut.

VHS version of Phantom Menace is the original theatrical version. Only place you can find it. Better pod race.

The sound on the LD was stunning. I had a friend who owned it, and I was able to borrow it for awhile. I'd love to find one someday just to have it in my collection.

Why do late issue VHS look so awful. I have Attack of the Clones, its pan and scan and it should look better than the OT it doesn't. Somehow the OT THX tapes and Indiana Jones THX tapes just a few years previously look great. I have Phantom Menace Letterbox VHS the laserdisc is so much better its no contest. I do remember renting the pan and scan VHS and we thought it looked awful, lowres and blurry. Once the DVD came out we never watched the tape again.
