Welcome to this Wisecrack Edition on Attack on Titan, where we explore the surprising political ideology of the society within the walls. Is it possible that in this dystopian society a controversial philosophy from a Nazi theorist, Carl Schmitt, may be the only thing keeping the fabric of society from collapsing? Or is that just what those in power want citizens to believe?

It's not about it being an enemy as much as it is about the fact that the nature of aggression lies within all of us and anyone could be capable of horrible things instinctually. There isn't a name that all evil belongs to, nor a villains, there is simply a dark side to a light side.

Seems strange to me that you could analyze Attack on Titan without mentioning the idea of the Jungian Shadow, of properly integrating your inner monster to be able to stand up to the monsters outside. This show always seemed to me to be about how the problems posed by the world aren't going to go away, even if you close yourself within a walled-off "safe space". You can either confront the monsters, by manifesting your own monstrosity, or tell yourself that you can hide - only to later watch them grow larger and tear down your walls.

I disagree with the inequality part Erwin uses the phrase 'we cannot defeat the titans as long as we dont suffer equally' or something like that there is a reason why erwin chose to lure female titan in the most secure wall, he knew that if the rich are safe, humanity will never be able to defeat the titans, in fact thats one of the reasons why erwin chose wall sina to conduct his operations in the first place. He also wanted to show the rich that they are equally vulnerable as the poor. this is further proven when the rich merchant is forcing people to squeeze his cart in the wall's tunnel in order to secure money when there is a food shortage after the wall's destruction, he uses his gaurds to force people to push the cart in the tunnel rather than letting people escape. and mikasa fixes that guy up
@TheTookar
@TheTookar 7 жыл бұрын
While you are right about what Erwin states, he himself is not the state. So the inequality/caste system still works because that is the institutional power. Erwin is essentially speaking truth to the system, so your point is interesting for how season 2 will reveal itself.

the only perfect societies capable of being actually accomplished are ones similair to schimits, all others are simply idialism. of course we should never seek a world where a person is used and thrown away like that but if society falls apart, facism must rise to recreate order. and it works, as seen in nazi germany. nazi germany not only had to pay massive war debt to the allied powers from ww1 due to them being blamed for it but also there was a world wide "great depression" so germanies money was fuckign shit, and there military? none. but nazi ideology turned it all around through nazi rule they became an empire capable of easily taking a country that had kept them at bay for all of ww1. now did they kill millions of innocent people to meet this goal? yes, however it can be argued in a time of massive crisis like that laid forth in attack on titan facist regimes become necessary even though they are not ethical

Let face the reality. Story wise, it isn't that great. It has a great plot how ever. The characters feel empty, except for Jean :p It is the action scenes in the anime, it is the battle tactics and plans and how they are clearly delivered with great map references. The manga, goes into the depth of the politics, plus the paneling is really something. Its traditional manga, but it is like the artist was more inspired by films. Manga art and story is done by one person, I can critique it and compliment is, still doesn't change the fact its achievement speaks for itself.

One big point of view I felt when I watched the show was that soldiers are people, and every death hurts. It is rare to find a show that shows scores of casualties of war from characters that have speaking parts. There so many people that had a story that we got a glimpse into, but they were cut down in a painful death. There isn’t battalions of faceless people that get wiped out every episode; and when a comrade dies, the show displays the pain everyone affected. PTSD and grief are carried by the survivors. Every death hurts.

Beatness In the manga, it's focussing more on the political and social structure way more. It provides it with a much more realistic, interesting, thought provoking, and debatable take to the story. Introducing more aspects of axiology, logic, reason, ethics, and morality. The choice between Erwin and Armin was an illustration between doing what is "right" and doing what is "good." Good = Subjective = Armin/Eren Right = Objective = Erwin/Levi One cannot really say which choice was really the correct one. Fucking sick of these damn time skips though every 4 chapters.

the fundamental flaw with Schmits theory is that they need an enemy to keep the people from fighting each other. However the people would fight against each other because of inequality making enemies with each other based on differences. However, Shmit doesn't see a point in fixing that inequality, just diverting their focus to a common enemy. This works but the ultimate and best solution would be to bring fairness. If the titans left, if there was no work toward equality, then the people would fight each other. However, if after the titans left, the walls dividing the classes were torn down, and the social issues were worked on to get fixed, there could potentially be peace. Schmits main problem is that he doesn't actually believe in peace and therefore sees no need to work toward it.
@Lilliathi
@Lilliathi 7 жыл бұрын
That's his point, people want to oppose something. If you fix current reasons people fight over, they will find new reasons. You can see this is our society.. even though women have equal rights, they now start to bitch about minor issues. Once those are fixed, they'll find new ones. Once we stop fighting over race and sex, we'll fight over what kind of pants we wear.

One of the main facets of Schmitts philosophy is that inequality is inherent. People have different levels of intelligence, attractiveness, and success. Interestingly enough the show Code Geass touches on this as well in the Britannian Empire. They are the most successful and powerful country because they use the strengths of human nature and conflict to their advantage. The result is a dystopian reality where fairness is irrelevant and after watching this I'm starting to see a lot of parallels between the societies from both shows. The general consensus seems to be that this way of thought definitely works, but are the human rights violations worth the stability and progress?

The book is so much better! There's a key point in about Sophie's magic that the film rips out and repurposes. SPOILER: It's the fact that she has her own magic/power pre-Howl, and it works well for her, but she's just not aware of it because of her self-esteem based on her perception of fairytales (though not explicitly stated). Versus the movie where the first instance we see of Sophie's power seems to come out in reaction to Howl's crisis. Not a bad narrative, but strange how Miyazaki's films, usually featuring female empowerment, would change this. The Witch of the Waste changed a lot too.

American made Godzilla movies, for example, weren't good.

Well, but the royal family is doing that as a form of self-punishment (well, only the King carrying the Coordinate knows that at any given time). Basically they're dragging their own population down to pay for their past sins (and temporarily, as a form of protection from genocide). That's quite the opposite of nationalism and imperialism, even though it uses the same methods to create internal stability. It's MEANT to be oppressive, because Paradis is in fact a jail, and the King is both prisoner and warden.

In the end, whether to use a dub or a sub comes down to which you enjoy more. And this video is not about enjoyment but about understanding how this fictional world works. And you can't deny that literally not being able to understand what the people say would definetly not help you understand the philosophy behind it. Also, Wisecrack is trying to be *somewhat* scientific here and they would lose a lot of credibility if they took footage of people speaking a different language and putting their own subtitles under it. @@RobotWizard4209 A lot of shows have to cut content for time while keeping the story mostly the same. Full metal Alchemist Brotherhood did it. And going by when the manga and anime are slated to end they are doing the same as fma and having the last episode and chapter come out at the same time. What i meant was they were implying that the anime would go off manga like Tokyo Ghoul did. Which would make sense considering how long the manga takes to come out and the nazi allegories but that isnt what theyre doing as far as I can tell. The furtherest they may take it is alter the ending because the author can't make up his mind

And his retort goes nowhere as Pixis’ speech defines how the story moves forwards and the final panels prove it right. So nope, it isn’t a theme the show supported. The show fully supports what Pixis said instead. Blame hacksayama, it really wasn’t a good idea to make this philosophy your entire story. And out of context, but a character denying another character isn’t proof of anything regarding what the show supports. But you’re right in this scene in particular, Eren was framed to be in the « right » by disagreeing with that suggestion and Pixis even agreed with Eren. Too bad the hack forgets about it and makes the series exactly about that.

Good intentions can lead to hell and bad intentions can save a people. We have all always known this, known that whether a man is good or bad, his alignment to morality has no bearing on his ability and proficiency. So, I guess what I would suggest is that we examine the theory, not as a Nazi theory, but as a theory used by Nazi's that exists in a conceptual state that does not adhere to morality. Not vouching for Shmit's idea, but even if it is a deeply flawed and, frankly, depressing theory, we may be able to slice it up and use the useful, practical bits, or at least examine the causes that led him to believe what he did. Because even if his solution is total bupkis, the issue, a large portion of people NEEDING to fight, may be real and need a proper solution.

Almost every powerful political entity has used the idea of making an external enemy a scapegoat to achieve unity within their following base. An outside enemy is a powerful way of uniting people, he was right about that. It's also true that we'll never get rid of either biological inequality or our inherent drive to fight. But you're right, his solution doesn't work in real life. There was some unity achieved in Germany by scapegoating and in Japan during the war but in both cases, you still had a lot of internal conflict within the country, not stability. And ancient Egypt had the longest-lasting social stability without a need for external threats. Invasions from outside made them less politically stable, not more united as one culture. Their religiousness and devotion to order made them politically stable over time.

+The Legend Never Dies It's not that intelligence is not allowed, it's that you have to realize that intellectualizing issues has an inherent danger. It's the whole, "staring into the abyss" thing. The more you examine and attempt to understand something, the more you are at risk of empathizing with it. This is a strange thing to say, because we usually see empathy as a good thing. However, we tend to forget that we don't view being a nazi sympathizer as a good thing. Sometimes, it's just safer to keep things at an arms length. Some boundaries NEED to be set lest we risk falling into the abyss. Sometimes, the difference between good and evil for someone is not ignorance, but knowledge.

Yet, they are basing some of the analysis on the dub, and dubs are often at odds with the original script because some US distributers prefer to make up new dialog that matches the lip movement rather than use an actual translation of the original dialog. Of course, it is possible that I simply don't remember the dialog they are citing, but I don't have time to watch the entire series again to find out whether it really existed in the original Japanese or not. I did do some spot comparisons of dub vs sub for this show, and the dub does come across as less substantial and significantly altered in meaning for at least some scenes.
