Let's Talk Philosophy

Күн бұрын

When reading the philosophy of George Santayana I think you will find something unexpected. Here was the poetic eloquence of Plato combined with the calm candor of Spinoza. Here was prose if prose there ever was. So, Let us light the candles again and illuminate one of the 20th century’s greatest philosophic minds.

That was absolutely beautiful. I first discovered Santayana's work when I was in high school and have loved him dearly ever since. It warms my heart to see such a wonderful man finally get a decent video explaining some of his work on KZfaq. I hope it will inspire even a few more people to find their way to one of his books, essays, or poems. Thanks for the video!

This video reminds me of my brief and shallow introduction to Santayana over 50 years ago. I recall "The Last Puritan" and could not adapt its theme to Santayana's Animal Faith, which I enjoyed; yet hardly comprehended. I knew I was in the unique territory while reading about the "Here and Now" in the context of knowledge and symbolism, memory, nature, and intuition. Thanks for the video. I will watch others now. It's Nov. 3, 2021; we're losing our liberal democracy to rural statehouses as they gerrymander and suppress voting. Superstition (QAnon for one) permeates a large percentage of the American population. Carbon dioxide density will scream above 420 ppm, and nation-states are powerless to control it. I'm reading "They Knew," a documentation of the fossil fuel and US Government's role in what is coming to our planet, a heavier tragedy in Santayana's terms, for sure.

Thank you for taking the time to watch! I would agree that there are some concerning things occurring throughout the America's, and I do not know entirely what to make of it. Let us hope saner heads prevail, though history may not be the best place to look toward for comfort. It brings be joy to find those who have found Santayana's work intriguing, one of my favorite philosophers not just of the 20th century, but of all the centuries.

I read “The Life Of Reason” a few years ago and just received “The Realm Of Essence” in the mail the other day. Santayana understood how to integrate matter and spirit and put each in place. There’s a rooted focus about him. We don’t see enough of this now because different cultures have grown far too tribal. Conservatives are very conservative now to counter a fractured commons and the liberals aren’t all that liberal minded. There are notable exceptions, of course. Santayana had a great voice though.

I hope you enjoy the read! Though his heart always remained in Europe, I will always place him as one of the greatest American Philosophers!

@@LetsTalkPhilosophy By his own choice he never got the American Citizenship and he always remained a Spanish national, even though he left Spain very early in his life, he always wrote in English, and when he returned to Europe he ultimately chose Rome. He wasn't afraid of contradictions, just the same way he didn't believe in God but he defended religion and Catholicism, and he spoke about his anti-clericalism but spent his last years under the care of nuns. By his own wish he was buried in a Spanish Catholic cemetery in Rome under his Spanish name Jorge, so I'm not sure if he would consider himself an American philosopher, although the influence of America in his work and career can't be denied, and to this day he's much more well known in the States than he ever was in Spain.

@@LetsTalkPhilosophy He planned to retire from Harvard when he was first hired. He said that through plain living and scrupulous saving, and then an inheritance from his mother, he was able to retire from being a professor at Harvard to wandering around Europe. He hated the USA! Read his autobiography, a deliberately neglected American classic, Persons and Places.

Make a video about Taoism by Lao Tzu. It has really great meaning about letting yourself go flow on the river of our life and not grabbing any branches or rocks to run away from it.

Is there a philosopher for whom absolute responsibility what is the only workable form of governance? I don’t mean this in regard to individualism I’m well aware there are absolutist individualist philosophers I think that individualism would be a natural consequence of absolute self-responsibility, I also don’t mean this in some kind of purist or extremist sense. I’m wondering if there is a philosopher out there with a similar outlook and what their work might look like?
