A wonderful quote from Dr. King. He was in very good company in his thinking. Jesus said similar words, as did the Buddha: In this world, hate never yet dispelled hate. Only love dispels hate. This is the law, ancient and inexhaustible.

I dont agree that people become corrupt AFTER gaining power. Most of the time people who are already immoral, self interested, and authoritarian will be the most interested and effective at gaining positions of authority and will not have as many opportunities to abuse power until they climb the hierarchy. There may still be some people who actually were good and got corrupted at the top but i expect its a minority

That was a fantastic analysis of the song. Good job. And I couldn't agree more, that if enough of us peacefully resist (or whatever you want to call it), we can actually put a stop to this cycle. Unfortunately far too many people believe in the cult of government and I don't think I will see real changes in my lifetime. But I won't stop trying.

Even if forced to fight back, always remember your intent is to not be ruled, not to rule. Those who don't want to rule make the best leaders. And that said we must define leader. A leader walks and works ahead of you. A master just makes demands and walks behind you. Always know the difference.

Honestly I feel like the real lesson isn't that hate is bad in it of itself, it's that YOU don't know what the good of the people is. The sheer arrogance of these leaders justifies their actions, that those who "stray from the path" are evil and must be purged. A system needs to acknowledge that you can't decide what's for someone's own good, and that you cannot engineer a utopia. Build society under the assumption of freedom, if you can't then you need to give up before you destroy all we hold dear in pursuit of something only you want.

I think a good comparison would be between the philosophy of this song and a song of the same name by the band Muse Muse has a different perspective and outlook on a revolution of the the people, and directly makes the point of avoiding a cycle of hatred in certain lyrics "So long as we all stay free" I think Tim Pool has a more cynical or pessimistic view of the subject matter where Muse have a more empowering and optimistic attitude.

The idea of vengeance being called justice was of interest to Nietsche also: "I do not like your cold justice; out of the eye of your judges there always glances the executioner and his cold steel. Tell me: where do we find the justice which is love with open eyes? Invent for me then the love which not only bears all punishment, but also all guilt! Invent for me then the justice which acquits every one, except he who judges!" Thus Spake Zarathustra, Ch. 19.

I think there is a deeper theological premise here. The battle of the wills is always between good and evil as a state of dualism. Christianity is the only religion that makes sense of absolute good and absolute evil because it points at the authorities driving the forces for good and evil. All authority is given from a place of power (Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis). If a leaders power is given to them by some devil of hell than their power should be deemed illegitimate because that power is not given to them by God (Common Sense by Thomas Paine). This is why George Washington believed that the success of the American revolution was divine intervention. Hence why its different, because the power given to Washington is from God. Perhaps even so much so that an atheist like Thomas Paine recognized it as so. Therefore it depends on the driving force for power. Is it selfishness, greed, pride, disgust, and hatred? Then that is not a good leader, but someone who acts on the will of the serpent and if the society, or better yet "the people" are secular they will always be at the will of the serpent because they have no transient power to resist the temptation of murder and pride. They might as well all be Hitler in a secular society. Only God can save a poor wretched sinner, and thus the doctrine of total depravity is needed for a coherent understanding of the world (institutes of the Christian Religion by John Calvin). Every revolution in human history has come about through the temptations of Lucifer to indulge in pride except one. The American revolution.

The government is established to have a monopoly on violence and police its use. The government should always exercise the minimum level of violence necessary to keep the civilization intact. Humans and companies dislike competition, as it presents a risk of failure, though they enjoy the results competition brings. Such people or companies may seek to ossify their positions at the top, or prevent the naturalistic failing of those who fail to compete. In order to interfere with the natural competition of society force/violence is required, so that the government is burdened by not just governance but organization, provision, curtailing and parenting. The minimum level of violence has been exceeded, based on the will of the people, who can now grow complacent, as the government expands. It no longer is clear where the government should stop in its growth, its interference, growth in power, issuing of dictates, or in its role as a parent to its citizens. With the loss of fundamental principles corruption is allowed to sink in deep, without oversight. Once all that is Public is controlled the only place left to expand is into the Private, and the result is fostering hatred. [ Discussion about avoiding being hated ] " ... when neither their property nor honour is touched, the majority of men live content ..." - Nicolo Machiavelli, The Prince. Naturally in a democratic state animosity grows towards the government proportionally to the curtailing of liberties, as such openly antagonistic groups will start arising to lobby political will in opposition to the expanding government. It is still reversible at this point, as bloody violence hasn't yet become the only means of political discourse. When the tipping point occurs there is the creation of a new group who will compete against the government for the position of being the monopoly on violence, through the use of violence. A coup d'état if brief, a civil war if protracted. The victory of either, demanding the destruction of the other, inciting or propagating the cycle of hatred, unless the victor can be bring prosperity, liberty and return to exercising the minimum level of violence needed to keep civilization intact.

@kenny6643
@kenny6643 2 жыл бұрын
The song’s received criticism for only being surface level but I think not having the message buried in allegory makes the message easily understood and applicable to political ideologies across the spectrum. It’s a well-known phenomenon that people tend to become the thing they hate. But I also think having the song be so simple reaches people who aren’t super political and can make them at least think about how the people they vote for or are planning to vote for will affect their lives and society. It’s a song for the general population so it doesn’t need to be super deep and metaphorical.
@TheRadioAteMyTV
@TheRadioAteMyTV 2 жыл бұрын
Surface level complaints are only from the blind who couldn't see the endless metaphors in the animation.
@kenny6643
@kenny6643 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheRadioAteMyTV I don’t think so. The animation’s pretty straightforward and the only cryptic parts I could see are the symbols on each of the statues and the colours of each faction. But other than those, the dictator wheel, the lyric changes are all surface. The song’s not that deep and doesn’t need to be since it’s appealing to a widely un-politically initiated audience.
@TheRadioAteMyTV
@TheRadioAteMyTV 2 жыл бұрын
@@kenny6643 I don't think we agree on what "surface" means at all. Look at it like this, if a seven year old doesn't get it, then it really isn't surface, and is carrying more weight than what the eye beholds. If you still don't agree, then we remain in disagreement on what surface means for this video.
@kenny6643
@kenny6643 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheRadioAteMyTV well in the context of the video, it’s understandable for a seven year old to not get the message because the video’s not targeted towards children. It’s targeted towards teens and adults, people who have an understanding or are at least capable of understanding politics. If the video was deeper beyond “hate begets hate”, a concept many people are familiar with, the breakdown video would be longer than five minutes. No disrespect to the content creator, I’m just saying there’s not much to breakdown to the video because the concept is one many people are familiar with, it’s just put in a social/political context. Again, the target audience is the politically uninitiated and that’s a broad audience to say the least. They might be involved a bit but not to the extent people like Tim are. So, rather than write a super heavy and complicated song, which I’m sure Tim’s able to do, he just made a simple allegorical one that’s straightforward with its lyrics. The lyrics by themselves are already direct but the video makes it even more so.
@TheRadioAteMyTV
@TheRadioAteMyTV 2 жыл бұрын
@@kenny6643 So you agree that a seven year old wouldn't get it. So therefore it is deeper than some are giving credit and not at all without deeper meaning. I am not smart enough to understand how something can be both straightforward and an allegory at the same time. My dictionary has them as two very different things. What I am seeing in your comments are a lot of set asides in order to call it superficial. Well, where I come from, that's called cheating. So it turns out we don't disagree at all about what surface level means, you just feel it necessary to create a bunch of set asides in order to call it surface level. I will stick with people who don't bother to obfuscate and manipulate reality into a new context for my reviews.

I wholly disagree with your assessment of the song. Pool's "Will of the People" song is not about utilitarianism but of or authoritarianism. Your use of the word utilitarianism in you critique to explain the "cycle of hatred" appears to be incorrect here . It is clear that the boy protagonist of the beginning song is the representative of the "will of the people." An authoritarian leader over him explains he has the moral justification over the boy with no tangible reason given. Anger, hatred, and violence grows in the boy has his world is turn upside-down, his speech oppressed and his family murdered by the hand and decree of the authoritarian. When he becomes victorious, anger, and perhaps hatred, never left his heart as he grew up and grew old. He becomes the very authoritarian he sacrificed his life defeating and lost sight of what the "will of the people" really is and that it is not solely his. The cycle repeats itself. Tim Pool is not offering any kind of moral justifications to either the authoritarian or to the rebel. And the song does not in any way offer a solution to this cycle. In fact, I daresay, there is no solution to this age old problem. However, we as listeners can surmise a solution, perhaps, through such as utilitarianism of some kind.

From a critique level, I sincerely found this video difficult to follow for more than one reason. The voice of this video needs some vocal lessons and I just felt like there was many repetitive remarks. It was difficult to feel comfort in concentration on it, unlike the actual music video. Anyways, cheers for supporting Tim and cast! :D

TLDR; Good song, lays out an important issue unfortunately the authors take away is shallow and lacks nuance. Sorry man but this is a grade school logic process, violence does not equal hate, hate does not equal violence and talking your problems out only works when both sides are willing to talk. Nazi Germany would never peacefully surrender it's position without the war to force capitulation. The KKK would never willingly have a sit down with MLK. The same as the pen the sword is just as powerful and more so when applied correctly. The Red Revolution was never going to end peacefully, Lenin wanted power and even if the Czar had given it over immediately he would still have more than likely been killed along with his family. A country can have all the peace summits it wants and stay out of the world affairs, it will do nothing to change an aggressive opponent who wants a fight; China v. Tibet, China v. Phillipines, US v. Sioux Nation, US v. Russia, Austro-Hungarian Empire v. Serbia/Russia, history is littered with this lesson. So running out to start fights is as you point out correctly foolish but thinking that violence is never an option is just as foolish, an armed robber does not ignore an unarmed target. Paraphrasing King Charles of Sweden in the 1700s "I will not start an unjust war but I will not turn away from one unless my enemies are defeated".

Well, isn't everyone a critique nowadays🙄 Okay, first of all, I never said or implied that Violence equals hate or vice versa. That's a stupid belief to have. Let me know where you think I may have eluded to that. Secondly, yes! In Nazi Germany, at that point, war was basically inevitable. If you had watched some other videos of mine, like my latest Attack on Titan video, you would've seen that I agree with you there. But I believe that Nazi Germany didn't even have to get to where it did, if more people would've been allowed to talk. But hey Authoritarianism doesn't allow that does it? I even said in the video: Violent revolutions are often more than necessary, but that doesn't make it right to revel in them.. Also, are you sure about what you said on the KKK? I think you really should do some research on Daryl Davis & what he, as a black man accomplished through only talking to Clansmen. Last point: When the HELL did I say that violence is never an option? WTF? The opposite, violence is ALWAYS an option. BUT it's not always the right option, & it will always have unforeseen consequences. My point in the videos is: Do whatever you can to avoid using violence, but sometimes even that won't be enough, & you'll have to use it anyway. That's fine. It's the way things are. If someone is attacking my children I will shoot them without hesitation. But my point is that: You should later on at least not revel in what you did. Don't be proud of using violence. Don't get accustomed to it... I think in the end we actually agree on everything you criticized. I don't know why you got that feeling from the video, but the point was never: All violence is wrong, but rather: All violence has unforeseen consequences, so think twice before using it.
