One of the greatest obstacles to documenting your kids' lives is the natural ebs and flows of motivation most of us experience with our photography. Sometimes you want to pick up your camera and take everyday photos. Sometimes when less motivated, or when your children get older, you may find you are only shooting on vacations and holidays.

Seeing the photo you had the courage and instinct to take at your father's funeral, really speaks for your character. Thanks for sharing.

When I watched your videos for the first time something about your way of documenting your family caught my my attention. Your relation with memories and daily documentation brought to me my way of doing in and it worked as way to get closer to my loved one ( since i've been living 500km from them for the last decade) and developed in my a way of being there and in the moments that I've never had before. Last year I released a book with part of the photos with a publisher and now I know EXACLY what you feel and you are talking about in this video and the way of trusting your guts to when to take or no the pictures. I've photographed the last days and funeral of one of my most loved people during the last year during the same period of producing the book, in time for her to see and approve the photos and that was my way of honoring and saying goodbye, enven with "only" 205 copies existing. Thanks for sharing with us this magnificent content and material, sometimes it changes lifes.

I really enjoy these kinds of videos. The ones that talk about the reason, the why, and the feeling behind the art of photography rather than the technical ( sorry if that sounds pretentious lol but it’s true! )

I can’t tell you how much I appreciate your videos and what you do. I’ve had a hard time lately of picking up my camera, but the last week has been a good refresh for me and I’m consciously trying to change my perspective on everyday life and how to capture it. My kids are 6 and 3, and I want to document who they are and how they grow. Thank you for your content and the inspiration.

The emotions you showed while talking hit me hard, Matt. I could feel the passion and the LOVE you felt. I shed a tear with you when you mentioned your father. Thank you for sharing these thoughts and feelings with us all. We never met (and probably never will) but I genuinely think of you as a friend. ❤️

Matt, I can relate to what you talked about with your Dad. When my twin brother passed away I documented everything and It was an impulse and a sense of comfort and hiding behind the camera from the pain from what I was photographing. It took me 4 years to develop the film and make prints in the darkroom. This is helping with processing such a loss.

Honestly, ethics is such an important part of photography for me - especially when photographing friends and family. There’s a lot of responsibility involved, with a camera, so I’m glad you made this video.

I totally am into long projects ... I started doing a daily self portrait when I turned 39, though I would document my last year in my 30s ... i continued after that to today (I am 62) sadly, I did it on digital and a hard drive crash lost about a decade. I did have a show in a gallery of my first decade where I printed on week's worth on 8" boards and we hung it at eye level all around the gallery's rooms, added personal comments and mixed in other self portraits throughout ... still doing it now, but on Polaroid/instax to have a physical object in case technology lets me down again!!!

Really good vid, thanks for the share. I find photography very frustrating and confronting at times. I love to document and shoot things that are rarely viewed, such as my kid crying after a fall off a scooter, or how we don't have 'funeral togs' but only 'wedding togs', there is so much richness and power in images of grief and pain yet they are very difficult things to feel 'ok with' snapping. The few times I have tried to snap a moment of my kid upset, its met with resistance to the point it feels wrong to take the image. However I KNOW that when they are an adult they would really enjoy the shot. We have so many one sided snaps of happy moments in our family, but its not always like that and I feel compelled to take the sad shots too, they are just met with more resistance. And with super sad stuff (funerals) that are close to you, you want to participate, but the other half of you is wanting to document, it really battles within your psyche. You feel like you could grieve later and that you won't have the chance to document later, but on the other side you don't want to be seen by loved ones as 'cold' and 'uncaring', argh! It really is a difficult topic. I guess the success of such things ultimately lies with the photographer and their images. If they are good images then it feels justified. If they are shit then they get more judgement and criticism from the outside world.

Great food for thought. The photographer's responsibility can weigh heavy but it can also be forgotten when we're wrapped up in our own perspective, it feels important to be mindful of both. Thanks for sharing the story of your Dad's funeral, it's a perfect example. The book looks incredible, hopefully it will inspire you, when you feel the time is right, to share your own family photos in print.

I spotted one at 20 bucks but I just got distracted for 30 min and half of them I saw on ebay were gone. You make photo books fly 😂

I loved this video so much, I personally tend to prefer this style of content that focuses more on what really matters. This book looks incredible and I will definitely pick it up when I can, thank you for talking about it! Also the jewel tones in his colors are so gorgeous, do you have any idea how he gets those? It's a color palette I've tried to figure out and haven't been able to yet. Also super valued what you said about photographing your dad-- that reminded me of David Wojnarowicz's photographs of his lover Peter Hujar on his deathbed, or Peter Hujar's iconic photo "Candy Darling on her deathbed"...two of my favorite people right there. Anyway. Thank you so much for sharing!

I had a moment like this the other day. I was carrying my Rolleiflex and I seen a guess and stream of cars behind it. Just as I was about to take the pic I stopped. Something told me this was just too personal and intimate to photograph. As the hurse passed a woman was crying in a man's arms. I knew then even though those would have been amazing photos I made the right decision to not push the button.

Not sure how responsibility comes into it when he shot most of the images with a large-format 4 x 5 camera on a tripod. Surely, all of the shots would have been posed or arranged with the subjects in advance?
