Pickleball, a recreational racquet sport that combines tennis, ping pong, and badminton, became a national obsession in the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic. The sport’s popularity is due to the social nature of the game, how easy it is to learn to play, and the game’s portability. With nets that can be set up on any hard surface, the game is generally more accessible than other racquet sports.
But pickleball’s spike in popularity created a public space problem when crowds of pickleball players began erecting temporary courts on public tennis courts, basketball courts, and parking lots. This, combined with the loud noises produced by rigid paddles and hollow, plastic balls, has created a new fight for space between pickleball players and pretty much everyone else.
As more pickleball facilities open across the country, the strain on other public spaces has been easing. Now, plans are being developed in cities and towns across the US and Canada to embrace the pickleball boom and develop free, dedicated spaces for the sport.

I live in Victoria (which was actually mentioned in the video for banning it from our public parks) and the big issue wasn’t that the pickle ball players were making noise, it was how loud the noise actually is. The sound carries for blocks and blocks, if you live anywhere close to the courts you can hear the constant “thunk, thunk, thunk” with your windows shut and your TV on. It was seriously affecting the quality of life of everyone that didn’t play. It was also being played almost exclusively by retirees and they were not very receptive to being told they couldn’t permanently take over the tennis courts. Their attempts to try and get sympathy from the public backfired spectacularly.

As someone who lives near a set of tennis/pickleball courts, the noise is annoyingly loud. I'm less outraged about courts being redesigned for pickleball (despite playing tennis very regularly), but the noise is definitely annoying.

As a tennis league player, I have conflicting feelings. Pickleball is so much fun and maximizes the ROI on previously underused courts. Further, pickleballers are far more social than tennis players in my experience. As a tennis player, though, it is hard not to get upset when courts that were always reliably open are now flooded with pickleballers. It's a lot like owning a condo unit in a building and overnight over half of the units become airbnbs and there is always chaos.

Man, going around my city trying to find tennis courts recently and finding all but the largest set of courts either converted or just occupied by pickle-ballers… the feelings are complicated. I like that there’s a more accessible sport out there that the older generation can enjoy, but it’s a growing city and the pickleball fans should be first and foremost lobbying for a new space for themselves, not trying to take it away from others. As a tennis and badminton player I’d never think of trying to convert, say, a basketball court, even if I saw basketball as a stagnant sport only enjoyed by some nebulous set of elite athlete types.

I currently work part time at a Pickleball facility in the United States and for the past several months, this sport has boomed in popularity. It was originally not so popular, with the older generation playing it but now I’ve seen an uptake in the younger generation getting involved. I think the fact that celebrities such as Lebron James, Tom Brady, etc are buying Pickleball teams definitely has an impact on its popularity. The sport is really simple to learn yet hard to master. It’s great for all ages and a great way to stay active.

Combination of low cost and effort for entry, coupled with the covid push in 2020/21 to find outdoor activities. Add to this the broad appeal of a multigenerational sport (I've played a game with an 85 year old and a 9 year old at the same time). It's less physically demanding so non athletic people can pick it up and get better over time while at the same time offering a challenge for more athletic competitive types with the existing widespread tournaments.

2:36 it is not 2 times as loud, it is 10 times as loud. 1 bell increase means a 10 time increase (because it is on a base 10 logarithmic scale). 10 decibels = 1 bell

@@gh_pics i get what you are saying. It is twice the size in a logarythmic scale... But, in my head, twice is very drawn to multiplication by 2, so when someone says twice as loud, gives me the wrong impression. But sure Edit: Maybe I said something wrong. Because it is not double the logarythmic, it is just adding. ... I'm trying to make sense of the "sensation of hearing", but... When you measure, it is 10 times more. 10 times more energy, etc... But okay, I get.
@andrebenites9919
@andrebenites9919 Жыл бұрын
@@123brinkman You are using a linear thinking for a non-linear problem. Example, using your example. If 3 decibels is twice as loud. Then 6 decibles increase is x*2*2=4x. So 9 decibels is 8x (because you are increasing by 3 in 3 different times, which is the same as doubling three times) So you can see that when you say increasing by 10 is 3 and a 1/3 times louder is not the correct call (I see you divided 10 by 3, you could have doubled it, but even so, it is not correct because you are using the operations in a wrong context) But, your first assumption was not wrong. To double the loudness, you need a 3 decibel increase. But it is because log2=0,3 (in base ten). So, 3 decimals... Decibels Using this, we can known that to get 8 times louder, you need 9 decibel increase. And, by default, 10 times louder is 10 decibels. But it is not like "so 5 decibels increase is 5 times louder". No. That is a wrong assumption because you are using linear thinking in a different context Sorry for the math lecture. I just really like the subject and can't contain myself. I'm a math teacher btw

Padel became the craze in Portugal during the pandemic, turning dozens of 5-a-side football pitches into padel fields. The place where I used to play football every week for years is now exclusively a Padel center marketed towards the rich (2-4 people paying to rent a field is a lot more expensive than 10-12). I play Pickleball every day. I go to any of 5 local public gyms that have Pickleball. Usually open for Pickleball 3 to 8 hours a day. All of the games are pickup games. Put your name on the next slot available on the signup board. Win or lose, sign up for another game. To play tennis, I have to find 3 other people who will meet at one of the empty tennis courts, of which there are many. Haven't played tennis in twenty years.

I live in Victoria and pickleball was a massive issue here and rightfully so. Mainly it’s the elderly who play here and they have been at war with everyone who lives anywhere near the courts they take over. It is so loud!! It’s almost impossible to stress how loud and annoying the sound actually is, you can hear it for blocks.

I had to play Pickle Ball in middle school, and just assumed it was a really niche random sport that we had to play since it was invented in my home state of Washington. Didn’t realize it became so popular elsewhere.

Pickleball is the official state sport where I live (Washington) so I've been aware of it for a while but I've never played. For the past 2 years, I have lived across the street from some outdoor pickleball courts and I can hear them playing everyday for about 6-8 months of the year. We had a local controversy bc we had city funds to make new outdoor courts and a "lively debate" broke out between the basketball people and the pickleball people lobbying to their sport to get the funds.

What is the development of padel in the US compared to pickleball? The advantages of pickleball that I spot right away are that it needs less less space and seems easier to play. On the other hand I find padel way more dynamic and rich from a technical and tactical point of view (humble personal opinion without having tried pickleball).

for places where it’s controversial, it seems like tennis court fences could be draped with heavy padded plastic “sheets” (as opposed to the thin green material usually used on tennis courts). They use those for both sound and wind mitigation in construction. It would contain the parts of the sound wave that are moving horizontally, and probably keep the nay-sayers from being as bothered by it. But it would also put more burden on the people who play in random places with portable nets.

I'd have thought a solution was to play Padder Tennis - its a small short paddle similar to what pickleball uses, the court is slightly larger at 15x6 metres, and it uses a very similar ball to tennis (25% less compression) so is way quieter.

Good video, but the decibel explanation was wrong. While decibels do increase on a log scale, so too does our ability to sense sound. It’s actually precisely the reason sound is measured on a log scale instead of a linear scale. This means that we do not perceive a sound as twice as loud when increasing 10 decibels, even if this is what is actually happening in the objective quantification of sound levels

Annoying and addictive....kind of sums it up. I normally play tennis. Like golf, tennis is a precision sport where racquet face position supported by form is really important and frustrating. When started playing PB with the family, it just took 3x out with experienced players to pick up the rules and weird scoring and be moderately competitive. Although the tennis player hitting approach to PB didn't sit well with some PB guys. The PB community was very welcoming, but still prefer tennis.

2:19 a slight imprecision: It is indeed the case that the decibel level vs perceived loudness have a linear relationship. It would be accurate to say that the decibel level vs measured sound have a logarithmic relationship. The thing is that our senses (from us humans) interpret external stimuli logarithmically: It's easier to differentiate 1 from 2 matchsticks falling on the ground than 11 from 10.

I really wish they elaborated more on meeting more people being appealing at the end, because it's probably a really big factor for pickleball's popularity in the suburbs. (tl;dr at end if you don't want to read) SO, in a city, since people often walk or bike everywhere, you can easily stumble into a cafe that is visited by a diverse range of people from the city, so that cafe becomes a social melting pot (which is called a "third place," more about that on Wikipedia and KZfaq if you want). But since American and Canadian suburbs are generally designed for car travel, these social melting spots are harder to form because you can't just stumble into a cafe driving around; you have to take deliberate effort to find parking, get out, and walk into the place. This means that social interactions in the USA's and Canada's suburbs can't really accidentally form; deliberate effort is needed for social interaction. This makes American and Canadian suburban people less socially connected, and less fulfilled in their social lives. Then comes pickleball. Remember how pubs and cafes are great social hubs in dense cities because anyone from anywhere can stumble into it? Its ease of picking up means that anyone can get into it, and its hotness means that it is being carried by word of mouth, so you can stumble into pickleball just like you can stumble into a city "third place." And because it's so fun (subjective), people in suburbs deliberately want to come back despite the tedious car journey, which solves the problem of easy-accessibility in suburbs. Another thing: Unlike church, where you pray first and socialize second, pickleball puts fun first. And unlike school, which is meeting ground mainly only for children, pickleball is a meeting ground for everyone. This means that pickleball serves as a more effective social spot than church and school, which were the two main community meeting grounds of suburbs before pickleball became the third. TL;DR, that is also a conclusion: Social lives in American and Canadian suburbs are hard because they are designed around cars, but pickleball is the one thing that can solve that. (idk just a urban planning nerd that wanted to throw in my two cents)
