Күн бұрын

Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde, renowned as Oscar Wilde, was born on October 16, 1854, in Dublin, Ireland. He was an Irish playwright, novelist, poet, and critic, celebrated for his wit, flamboyant style, and sharp social commentary. After studying at Trinity College, Dublin, and then at Magdalen College, Oxford, Wilde gained recognition for his comedic talent and charm in London society. His works often satirized the hypocrisy and superficiality of the Victorian era.
Wilde's literary career flourished in the 1890s with plays such as "The Importance of Being Earnest" and "An Ideal Husband," along with his only novel, "The Picture of Dorian Gray." However, his personal life was marred by scandal and controversy, particularly his trial and conviction for "gross indecency" due to his homosexuality. He endured two years of hard labor in prison, which had a profound impact on his health and reputation. Wilde died destitute in Paris on November 30, 1900, but his works continue to be celebrated for their wit, intelligence, and enduring relevance.
In the realm of Gothic literature, "The Picture of Dorian Gray" stands out for its innovative approach to the genre. While many Gothic works rely heavily on external manifestations of evil, such as haunted houses or malevolent creatures, Wilde's novel delves into the inner workings of the human psyche. Instead of relying solely on supernatural elements to create a sense of horror, Wilde masterfully crafts a narrative that explores the psychological depths of his characters.
Central to the novel's exploration of Gothic themes is the idea of the corruption of the soul. Dorian Gray's descent into moral decay and depravity serves as a chilling reminder of the consequences of unchecked desires and the pursuit of hedonism. As the portrait hidden in his attic reflects his inner corruption, the novel becomes a haunting portrayal of the inner struggles between good and evil within the human soul.
Moreover, "The Picture of Dorian Gray" challenges traditional Gothic tropes by presenting a protagonist who is not inherently evil but rather becomes corrupted over time. This nuanced portrayal of moral ambiguity adds layers of complexity to the narrative, elevating it beyond a simple tale of good versus evil. Wilde's exploration of the duality of human nature and the complexities of morality makes his novel a profound and thought-provoking contribution to the Gothic genre, cementing its place as a classic of literature.

@@lunablue745 I believe so, I've checked some of old versions when I still had access to the MGM TV channel about 15 years ago(we no longer use cable nor satellite tv in my home). But the few DVDs I got unfortunately were from most recent adaptations. Would love to have a copy of the classics. The one with George would be the one that Dorian redeems himself.

@@crossetler_2184 it stinks that now we have to pay so much money to have access to television! I know if you do a search on KZfaq for "classic movies", there are quite a few good ones that come up for free viewing. I'm pretty certain the version of Dorian Gray with George Saunders (1945) Dorian not so much redeems himself as ends himself by destroying the painting, right after he kills poor Basil.🙁

Captivating, Tony. The sound is perfect. After my usual struggle with technology, I sat here mesmerized. I adored your first rendition. That you cared enough to make this second one for us, with all the hard work involved, "thank you and much appreciated" seems woefully inadequate. However, thank you, Tony. Hi Tony. Well I'm 2 hours in and not even a tiny bit bored. I hadn't expected the writing style to be so very... um modern? It plays like a *film* drama. Each character clearly defined and recognisable if not completely relatable. The genius of Oscar Wilde!, and excellent production values, (thank you Tony). I thought that I would never have the patience to experience this work in it's entirety, (having tried once before with a different recording). I'm very much looking forward to listening at every chance I get. 💖👂🏼🔈📚🙏

Wow, what a ride. Oscar can be a bit list-y at times, as was the age, but he was also bravely way ahead of his time. Read by you, there's a masculinity that brings deeper meaning to the more flowery aspects of his style. I love that you took your time and consumed every word. The entire trip was captivating. @ClassicGhost I did! Great job. It took yesterday evening and today. Very good job. I have off work Fridays, so I listened to this while cleaning the house, doing laundry, and running kids to appointments. I only ever saw Dorian Gray in TV shows and movies. Never knew it was so long! Your narration made it easy to follow and captured the essence of the character. Oscar did a fantastic job of writing about an utterly loathful character; this really is a great story. He really was a great author. Just saw you posted another story.
