This is my childhood here I grew up on Rockport Ave. We lived there from 1985 and moved away in 2002. This place only existed in my memories and this video makes me nostalgic. I know this area like the back of my hand. Thanks for taking me back.

Thanks for making this video. I grew up in this neighborhood (Rockport Ave- right behind the shopping center). I lived there from 1977-1988. Loved the trip back in time!

Thanks for the memories. I used to work at Nations during my high school days from 1978-1980. Enjoyed the free pie at break time. I remember the Rexall drug store along with the lounge. Great job capturing my younger days up there 😊

That was an interesting video! Thanks for posting it. My family moved to a house on Sierra Road in 1960. I went to Piedmont Junior High School around 1968, and my band teacher there was Mr. Laverne Beacock, who later opened that music store. I remember when that shopping center was still an orchard. Didn't there used to be a big toy store there called Rasco's? Eric Maher, Piedmont Hills HS '75

Thanks for uploading this video it definitely brought back so many memories. Especially Nations. I do remember the flower shop, the big toy store doughnut shop, and the Lucky that used to be there. I live down the street from there (and still do) and all I can think about when I turn the corner or Sierra and Piedmont is seeing the Shopping Center sign. I still wish the Center was there today instead of the houses now.

Thanks for the video. Brings back memories. Both from working at Lucky Grocery Store to eating at Mountain Mike's Pizza(in video called Pepper Tree Pizza).

Thanks for the video, I spent many afternoons there en route home from school and took many grocery shopping trips to Lucky in the 70's with my Mom. Pepper Tree Pizza was a Mountain Mike's, and before that iirc a Klondike Jack's Pizza. The Joy of Dancing was Rasco's variety store when I was about the age you were in 2000 when you shot the video. My sister's most all took classes at Joy of Dancing. One of my memories was when Channel 7's Rigo Chacon came to shoot a news piece at the Rasco's. One lady who worked at Nation's moved to Tracy where I live now, and got a job at the Nation's there. Quite a shock to walk in and see here, even more amazing she remembered me from San Jose! We went to Winchell's for a donut on Sunday after Mass at St Victor's. Like you, I also never had a drink at, nor ever entered that bar! I would love to come by and see that yellow sign some day, having seen it most every day of my life from until I moved out of my parents house!

...I see a few familiar names in the comments. I worked at Peppertree pizza from 92-98. Damn near grew up in that plaza because my grandpa worked at the post office ...we used to trade pizza for Chinese food, bagels & or Nations pies. Good times, thanks for posting this.

I worked there during that time frame too. Remember wen the owner brought back a lady from Asia. Then she stole his car and never came back?

Rick, just seeing your reply hella months later ...you talking about John or Ed? Or was it the lame dude who bought it right before it closed? I couldn't imagine John nor Ed (who were both married) bringing some lady back from Asia lol but damn I could see that with the guy who bought it later.

Makes me sad... My friends and I went to Independence High but we would stop at the bagel basket and get breakfast every so often. Used to go to Nations all the time, and visit the pet store often. Went to joy of dance when I was little. So sad that its no longer there

There used to be a record store there in the 70's where I'd walk to and buy 45s for .99 each. I think they were called Wheat Straw? They were cheaper than Star Records that charged $1.59. Mountain Mike's was the high school hangout in the 80's too.

Hi Joel, Amazing documentary! My grandparents owned "Tin Hong Chinese Food" in this plaza and I am trying to get as much memories possible since there was no Yelp back in the day when this plaza closed. Can we discuss further? Our restaurant was the only one you skipped since we covered everything up by that point as we've officially closed around Fall 1999

Your grandparents were very nice. I loved eating at their restaurant as a kid. We would always order “to go” as we lived right behind the shopping center on Rockport Ave. Your grandfather would always give me an extra egg roll 😁

Hey. I saw that you uploaded a video about the old Wonderpark at the Great Mall and I am wondering if you have any more old footage of The Great Mall or McCarthy Ranch during the 90s?
@LocalHistoryGuy
@LocalHistoryGuy 2 жыл бұрын
Hey, Alberto! I wish I had McCarthy Ranch footage. I would have liked to record Computer City and Discovery Zone. I do have Great Mall footage but it's from 2000, so I don't know if that would interest you. I shot a "comedy" video there with my friends. Off the top of my head there's brief footage of a store called Music For a Song, a tight shot inside a candy store near the food court, and a Dave & Buster's security guard. I'd be happy to look for the footage. The tape would be at my mom's and I'm heading over next weekend so let me know if that's of any interest.

@@LocalHistoryGuy I would and others would like to see any footage of the Great Mall from back then. Its quite rare seeing these places back in the day since not everyone owned cameras back then. I wish people recorded McCarthy Ranch too. It seems The Great Mall got all the attention back then since they both opened in 1994. Say do you remember the first store where Ashley Homestore is now? That question has me thinking a lot. I know Loehmanns opened there in 2004.

@@SenorWoods2722 Unfortunately, I don't recall what was there prior to Loehmanns. My sister actually worked in that Loehmanns for a summer. Stay tuned for an update on the Great Mall footage...
