I've been a diehard fan of the Cartoon Network City era ever since I first laid my eyes on it in 2004. To me, this was the pinnacle of the network's existence and it has never quite been able to recapture the same energy and feeling ever since the network rebranded away from it in 2007. It's a shame too, as short lived as this era was it was hands down the best branding the network had ever had. I'm a fan of the Powerhouse era too, don't get me wrong, but in terms of bumpers, this was the best the channel ever had, and based on the responses I've seen online, the overwhelming majority of Cartoon Network fans seem to agree.
Well, I decided that I wanted to make an analytical retrospective video highlighting the genius, glory, and immersive wonder that the city was able to provide to kids watching the channel back in the day, as well as explain why I personally doubt the network will ever pull something like this off ever again. Sadly, times have changed quite a lot since the city era and given what I've observed of the network over the past decade, I strongly believe we will never see anything like this ever again--at least, from this network in particular.
Hopefully you'll tag along for the ride and find this video to be a comfy trip down memory lane! Maybe you're new to this era of CN and want to see what all the fuss is about! No matter your experience with the silver age of Cartoon Network, I hope you enjoy the video all the same. Thanks for watching, and please share this video around if you find it worthwhile!

The CN City era more or less has some of the most memorable bumpers that I've ever seen on any Network and it was just so fun seeing all of our favorite characters have small talk with each other and they even gave a feel as to what the early 2000s were like. It's quite sad that we'll more than likely never get anything of this quality again, but at the very least we can thank the people on the internet that search out for these old bumpers and upload them for people like you and me to watch again.

The sad truth is TV networks don't even care to be as creative with their promos or bumpers anymore. For that reason, this is partly why I prefer the old Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon and Disney Channel. Call me a nostalgiatard, but it's true. P.S. the Noods bumper era was underrated and should've lasted further than three years if Cartoon Network hadn't given up on cartoons during that time.

I think what makes this era special, in particular, is that the shows and the environment they created for the characters to live in feels so fleshed out and natural - whereas if you stuck all of their modern shows together in the same format, something would feel off. Mainly because *there's nothing there anymore* besides Gumball and Teen Titans Go, so consequently, their character models and others just dragged out to fill space would be walking the streets.

This is such a great dive into the CN of that era, amazing job! Even without audio, you can tell just how much work and effort went into all those bumpers by the visuals of the CG and gags of the characters, each one is like its own miniepisode of the City. Sadly, I think we’re reaching a point where marketing for content in general is starting to become part of social media. I’ll hear more about a show from their creators online than directly from the network. I think it would be really cool if someone makes a sort of expanded fanmade CN City with the new shows involved too. Otherwise, these old clips will always be gems for us that grew up watching them.

It was the winter of 2005, I was 12, just finishing 6th grade, and my family had just moved in to our brand new house and got a dual-DVR satellite package from DirecTV to record shows on two TVs from two different channels simultaneously, and since my room was next to the living room, I ended up getting the other DVR! Man, what a time to be a kid! I had the excitement of a brand new house, finally getting my own room after having to share only two rooms with my whole family previously when we lived with my Grandparents, and had the entire Spring and Summer to enjoy this awesome era of Cartoon Network as well as Toonami and Adult Swim while also being able to record almost as much as I wanted so I could binge whenever I wanted. CN City is without a doubt my favorite era of Cartoon Network. The very idea of seeing all these different characters interact outside of their shows and live their everyday lives in a city is ingenious. I especially love the one where Samurai Jack and Johnny Bravo are doing their laundry and the one where Fred challenges Coop and Jamie to see whose vehicle is faster. It made these fictional characters feel more real and grounded. I remember back in the Fall of 2014 when I came home from one of my tutors. It was a Friday night, all of my homework was done, and I accidentally stumbled onto CN City compilations on KZfaq. Watching those bumpers was an amazing trip down memory lane, one that no words can ever describe. However, things would change when Cartoon Network got rid of it and made things feel bland and uninspired. I don't know how it was for other countries, but here in my country, CN City was replaced with an explosion of random, red arrows, confetti, pine trees, and white background. This was around the time they were airing shows like Secret Saturdays, Bakugan, Total Drama, Inside Jimmy's Head, Ben 10 Alien Force, Chowder, Batman Brave and the Bold, etc. Don't get me wrong, all of these shows have great nostalgic value to me. But the lack of CN City made things feel a bit hollow.

This is how it was for the States around that time:kzfaq.info/get/bejne/et6ToMSBmd3HZ58.html Toonami ended around that time too but it was later brought back on Adult Swim in 2012. Toonami made a garbage Black Lives Matter message a couple of months over here in the states:m.kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eNuGZ86LmbWzoH0.html Adult Swim has been doing some bad stuff like not paying Frylock’s voice actor (he is currently homeless right now) and banning episodes of Aqua Teen Hunger Force and The Boondocks for a dumb reason (I’m not joking, look it up). Great video! I absolutely loved this era of Cartoon Network and I’m glad to see that so many other people look back on it fondly too! Fun fact: Cartoon Network City’s Main Street is actually based on a real life location, the FOX Studios Backlot in Sydney Australia! Animal Logic’s studio (where these bumpers were animated) is located on this backlot and the animators used the Main Street set as inspiration. If you do an image search for “FOX Studios Backlot Sydney” you will quickly see the resemblance of CN City. The architecture, the colors of the buildings and even the placement of the powerlines/ street lights look very close to how they appear in CN City. The road even has a slight curve to it, exactly as it does in the CN bumpers! I find it pretty cool to think that Cartoon Network City actually does kind of partly exist in the real world (just minus the characters of course)!

Thanks for this well-thought-out video. I rediscovered CN City last summer via some compilation videos and remembered how cool and special it was back when it was airing. You made a lot of good points about why it can't return - biggest of all, money - but at least it's being archived so that it will not be restricted to fans’ memories.

Excellent video. While I feel Powerhouse was the better era overall, especially early on, City is certainly a close second in my book and did a lot right. I feel like a lot of the reasoning for why we won't get another era like this again is simply because of streaming taking priority and the new role TV has to fulfill as a result. I wouldn't quite say CN has entirely lost interest in preserving history, it's just their interests have changed over time and they're trying to do what works; a channel that would've thrived years ago could easily be done online today. I'm still a fan of CN and think they have a good output, but the bumpers were arguably part of what heightened the nostalgia for that time. I can completely understand why they wouldn't want to go forward with it though.

FANTASTIC ANALYSIS MY DUDE! I'm always so excited when other people on the internet talk about their love for the city cause it deserves to be remembered. I pretty much agree with just about every point you make, but I would like to point out not only did the Boston Bomb Scare drive Jim staples to resign, but not even a MONTH later the 2007-08 Writers Guild of America strike began, which many think likely acted as the major catalyst for the network to start pushing out so many reality-tv-ish live action shows, as you don't really need a lot of writers when making those.

To go into why CN is just the TTG and Gumball network, it basically just boils down to those shows getting the best ratings and thus CN pushes them ad nauseum, which ironically causes the network to continue to plummet in favorability. But CN isn't really going to make an effort because they're moving all their shows to a streaming service anyways. As for why they continue to bring on new shows and not actually push them? All I can guess is it's the sink-or-swim approach that far too many companies operate on when they no idea what they're doing. Essentially if you don't reach gumball or TTG status with basically no help, CN is just gonna let you sink (in this case, you're expected to swim an entire ocean).

It's so good and nostalgia and great way to explore the city with all your favorite cartoon characters share in the same universe which I wish modern CN would bring it back or have sonething simular to it but noooo we get a bland, lacked, and forgetten era that people stop looking at it and are disappointed.

CN City era was the best era if you ask me. Just this idea of all these characters from varying designs and worlds living in one city and interacting with each other was just awesome and even the ones that didn't appear at least had a reference to them like "Fudd's Electronics". The music helped too. Growing up and watching the bumpers made me wish I lived in that world. While the Powerhouse era was classic CN City was arguably for me at least the channel at it's peak because once '07 came around the network started a decline that's only worsened and the Noods era was only saved by The Clone Wars for me.

I’m sure child me would’ve have his mind blown to seen tom and jerry, courage, Ed Edd n Eddy in this big city, talking to other cartoons that while I wasn’t a big fan, still would’ve been enjoyable, and give me some understanding of their character without even viewing their cartoon.

The President at the time Jim Samples wanted the network to look it's best and be it's best, that's what the new president Tom Ascheim wants to do too, plus CN is airing these non permanent transitional bumpers by bullpen Studios, and alot of the new content is coming out most likely next year.....so I have hope we might get something similar like the CN Hotel Bumpers they did in 2020.

I know it'll never happen, but I had a couple cool thoughts while watching your video! What if they could convince the old animators and writers from popular cartoons to make just one more new episode, and get like 12 of them in all. Then advertise a one-time event for a Saturday night and see all the views that come pouring in, indicating that a strong desire still exists for these cartoons. What if they partnered up with a streaming service, put all the CN city bumpers on there, and made new bumpers that fleshed out the city even more, making the city itself the show that people come to stream. From there they could branch out and introduce the viewers to new cartoons through the city. Either of these sound exciting?

AT&T doesn't give a shit about anything that isn't HBO and WB, and has made it obvious over the years. To killing off DC comics to selling off Crunchyroll, to furthering downscaling CN and AS, it's obvious that HBO only matters to them, and they are paying lip service to everything else.

I feel like this era gets more credit than it deserves. The City era is when most of the original cartoons from the late 90's and early 2000's were ending or getting cancelled. Compounded onto that, they were removing those shows from rotation in a piece meal style. Cartoon Cartoon originals in the city era, if memory serves me right, got a measly 1 hour block on weeknights near the end of 2005, and another block in early 2007 that came on at 9AM on the weekdays. This was also the era when they replaced Toonami with Miguzi on weekdays. I was in middle school when CN City was in its prime, so I was growing out of Cartoon Network during this time period. If I wasn't watching Viva La Bam or South Park, the only reason why I would tune to Cartoon Network was for Adult Swim.

4:06 That's because CN airs the episodes randomly instead of consistently and constantly switches around the dates. They should bring back Cartoon Cartoon Fridays.
