One of my favourite tools to use in the metal shop and auto shop for both disassembly and fabrication! This is a quick intro for students into the function, use, and operation, of our Plasma Cutter, so they can use it safely. Caution: you're going to fall in love with it! (110V-220V "cheater" adapter not included with the Plasma Cutter).

I've got another tip for you to help you cut clean round holes. If you just scrape the surface of the metal with a hole saw, then when you drag your plasma over the scraped metal, it will follow the hole saw scratch. Makes your circles less less butchered.

Picked up the Primeweld one with pilot arc, haven't tried it yet due to too many other projects. Your shop press is also on my short list of things to do. I've looked into buying one, but they are either junk, over priced, or not available. 20' of 5"x1.75" is $160, some misc other steel, hardware, and a $60 bottle jack, is probably going to be around $300 or so.

These things are great for slicing up sheet metal. If you got enough amps on them they will cut thicker metal easily. No idea why people are preferring oxy acetylene torch, this thing makes acetylene obsolete.

I just bought a plasma cutter with a built in air compressor. I have a really dumb question; can use one of my Yellow Top Ultima batteries as a power source keep in mind my truck runs on two 400 amperes alternators. I’m planning on adding this to the bed of my truck via custom job.
@GregWellwood
@GregWellwood Жыл бұрын
If you can convert the battery 12V into 110VAC or 220VAC with enough current to run the plasma cutter, it should work. How realistic/affordable that would be, I don't know. If this is a welding truck with one of those big generator/welders on the back, you should have enough power.

The "ground" clamp isn't a ground. These machines are usually DCEN. Meaning it runs on DC current and the torch is the negative.
@melgross
@melgross 9 күн бұрын
‘Ground” clamps on welders and plasma cutters are never grounds anyway. They’re work clamps, they complete the circuit. I don’t know where the word ground started to be used, but it’s wrong and dangerous.

Stupid question.. I have an inverter cutter. Let’s start with explaining what that means exactly. Second… I have 110 in my garage and a 20amp breaker. If I set the amps on the machine greater than 20 I would in theory trip the breaker right? Sorry for the simple questions, but this is all new and I’d rather do it right without damaging anything.
@GregWellwood
@GregWellwood 5 ай бұрын
Old school machines would use a transformer. Inverter machines use switching circuitry to create power much much more efficiently. It's Black Magic and VooDoo. The output current and the input current are not exactly related as you think; it's taking your 120V at 20A and converts it to (say) 120A at 20V. Worst you do is pop a breaker, it will work.

First thing I would do is contact the company, especially if it's still under warranty. If it is no longer under warranty, I would have a peek inside - I've had even brand name machines have a bad connection inside. If it were me, I would just check the power cord, whip, and ground connections inside the machine just to make sure they are tight. Make sure it's unplugged when you do that, and don't touch the capacitors.

@@GregWellwoodif it’s one of these cheap ones, there is no real warrantee. That’s just one of several reasons why they’re so cheap. When they stop working, you throw them away and buy another cheap one. When that breaks down, you throw it away while cursing the money you wasted that could have gone towards the good one you’re now buying.

Do you have eyes? Can you read? It’s a drag tip, it touches the metal. You could have read that. Look how he’s holding it. It should be close to vertical. Speed depends on amperage and metal thickness. Was that so difficult for you? If you get one, there is a manual that will show and tell you, but if you’re one of the dumb guys and don’t read it, well, that’s on you.

I didn't know I wanted that. But it's hard to justify buying such tools, due to my workplace having it's own engineering branch to deal with such things. Having the tools at hand would be convenient as I could get some things done on the spot, but not cost effective for the few uses it would get and I wouldn't want management hanging this over my head. But a man can dream 🥲
