Unless something changes, an issue lurking in older PlayStations' internal timing systems threatens to eventually make every PS4 game and all downloaded PS3 games unplayable on current hardware. Right now, it's not a matter of if but when this problem will occur. Let's discuss.

yeah. i still have all old consoles from nes to ps3. but honestly on x360/ps3 it was already getting visible where the business is going. even single player rpgs started requiring day 1 patches, day 1 content downloaded from servers, games that always require online, buying digital games meaning 1 day you cant download them again atleast on that machine etc etc. so i just gave up about x1 and ps4 never even considering getting them. their longevity is near zero even without knowing about this killswitch its obvious why the companies made this decision. next they will turn their sights at steam and others who sold you a game 10 years ago and you can still play it. companies losing profits. if they cant attack steam then theyre prepared with the live service drm stuff so each game itself has a killswitch

I wasn’t eager to go past the PS3 even before all this. Games are becoming too big and complicated for my liking. The old NES games could be beaten within an hour most of the time if you knew what you were doing. There are some notable exceptions like the Legend of Zelda or Willow (a pretty neat movie based game that was a fairly simple RPG. Only complaint was that some of the dungeons were easy to get lost in).

@@Aries73 you know the company will not make money from my GameCube games or my original Xbox games I emulate that are 20 years old right? So it is certainly fair use. That's why we pirate these games to save them. It will be harder and harder to find these disks anymore and a lot of people are going digital. If I want to play silent hill 1 on a disk, that is £80. All of that money is not going to the developers. It's all going to the person selling the game.

Mentioned this on another video related to the same issue, but there was a theory around the PS4/Xbox One launch that Sony were entertaining the same ideas that Microsoft were, and only backtracked when they saw the shitstorm that erupted and quickly rejigged their initial idea. The irony is that Microsoft did a 180 with their systems and are all for you using what you paid for (to an extent), yet Sony just hid their original intent behind hardware that will one day fail and they know damn well 95% of the gen pop won’t care.

I removed the cmos battery tonight in my PS3 Slim and replaced it with a new one. In Short - In my findings: - Every digital game needs to be verified online, or it won't play or revert to the demo version of it. DLC attached to physical game discs also disappears too. - Setting the time/date manually does nothing to restore it. - Reinstalling your games fresh from the hard-drive, with a new installation data, will not restore it. (I don't know about backing up pre-saved digital games/didn't try that). - We must log-in to restore the game licenses or you'll be locked out after reinstalling a new battery. The long of it, here is what happened to me: At start-up, the console prompted to reset the time and date, so I did exactly to the hour/minute and current date. I found after, I still could not access my digital games. I checked the information data, and it was blank underneath with the 'buyer icon' displaying this dash line symbol '-'. Any game I download prior, when trying to boot it up, either would state the game has a time limit and needed access to the network or reverted to the demo versions of that game. I tried deleting a ps1 game and reinstalled it with a back-up installation of that same game I kept on my ps3 hard drive (Chrono Trigger) and after reinstallation, I tried again and the same error message of a time limit appeared/you need to log into the network to verify the purchase. Reinstalling a game, does not work. After this, I tried a physical disc game with DLC, to see if it would still be there included in the game. It was Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, as I previously downloaded the two extra chapters in the epilogue ending, and booted it up; wasn't surprised to see that the DLC did not appear in the game. I decided to log into the network and every game then booted up just fine and all my DLC was restored in the digital games and back into the physical game discs data too.

@tropicaltracerbirdie2241
@tropicaltracerbirdie2241 3 жыл бұрын
@@tonyoverstill7587 Yes to all three of those. The new battery worked just like the old one, to my relief. In my Slim unit (I have the PS3 with the manual slider door on top) it had a compartment holder for the battery on the Motherboard. I had to dismantle the entire unit to reach it (and this unit version is not easy to put back together, as all the cables are shorter and more compacted inside, especially all the cables to the laser attaching to the Motherboad below). Don't really recommend an inexperienced person opening up the console, and then begin pulling this open unless they have a general idea on what they're doing, or would have a very difficult time putting this version of the PS3 Slim back together. Here is the number of the replacement battery I found inside the PS3 Slim for it in my unit: CR2032E Lithium 3v. The replacement can just be bought at the store locally.

Children’s hospitals generally require donations to be of new, in-box product. For reasons of not introducing any additional health risks for kids who may already be dealing with some bad stuff. It bites for the hospitals that even those consoles, which were purchases and donated new, will go offline eventually. Fortunately, I suspect that a lot more Xbox 360s were donated to Child’s Play, for instance, than PS3s. And the Switch is probably the go-to at the moment.

At least the NES before it had some good ones like Jetman and the PS1 had Hurrikanger and Gaoranger games which were decent. But then the PS2, Gamecube, and PS3, Wii U and PS4 skipped them as well while only the Wii had one (Super Sentai Battle Cross) and that was......really meh. And now the PS5 seems to be skipping them as well despite the anniversary. Meanwhile the Switch had one: Lupinranger but.....yeah we dont talk about that.

@Jimmy Revoudo “play has no limits” hows that going Sony? Barely anyone’s got a next gen system because of poor next gen stock and scalpers and already we all have to hear about a cmos in the ps5. I really want to give Sony a slow condescending clap right now, that’s half a thousand dollars for insidiously intentional design flaws in those systems, for that to die and be defective trash. Way to go Sony ‘clap’ ‘clap’ way to Fing go. At this point, Microsoft may as well take the lead in consumer friendliness, and the support of backwards compatibility. Even though I feel this statement may age like A fine milk given time, Microsoft has earned what praise they have made so far, for now.

@Laura Brown true, I’m able to play some ps1 games on my ps3, I’ve even a ps2 if some games don’t wanna cooperate w/ PS3, classic tomb raider1&2 don’t wanna work with PS3 so I’ve got ps2 to help out. recently I’ve played classic resident evil 3, the original from 1999 has more content to provide then it’s “remake” in 2020, it was rushed trash, and gravedigger was nonexistent, it was a giant bloodworm burrowing underground while you were exploring raccoon city, and you’d fight in in a desecrated graveyard in raccoon park. Good game, the 2020 version is just a re-invention of the same game. the classic tomb raider games are better than the survivor trilogy with 2013, rise,& shadow of tomb raider, they just didn’t have the same charm as the original games from long ago.

At my Bachelor party a few years back my brother organized that, when we got to the hotel after a craaaazy night, and everybody was about to crash, he busted out whiskey and Red Bulls, and an N64 WITH GOLDENEYE for a 4-player, Big Heads-No OddJob tourney. Love that ol'machine.

@@carradio2011 yeah i mean you're right about psn...i'd get it for the games i don't own but i'm actually lucky enough that my ps3 model is the last slim model that was released and it's in pretty good condition so everything is still alive. I do have A LOT of physical ps3 games and hopefully at some point they'll be playable on the ps5, the way MS is allowing 360 games to be played on the xs s|x. I think the ps3 and the 360 era was the last one before microtransactions started to really take the gaming world's front stage. There were definitely micro-transactions in that time but not to the extent that we saw on the ps4 and xb1 era.

In about 20 or 30 years, hackers and modders are gonna flood the market jailbreaking these old PlayStation consoles just so that future generations can see how the games of today will look and run. They are gonna have a field day. And it's not a question of if, it's a question of when.

Sony seems to have a love/hate relationship with nostalgia. They include Astro's Playroom on the PS5 which is a top quality 'literal' nostalgia trip. And then you also have Playstation Classic which was a slapped together, half-assed attempt to cash in on Nintendo's Mini-console craze.

I am curious. How does the Xbox keep the time when it’s shut off if it doesn’t have a battery? Or does it just sink every time it connects? Either way it seems like it would run into the same issue if it’s got to check online to sync everything up when it turned on. Although since Xbox seems to have a unified store across all of their devices, that might be less of an issue of the servers going down?
@ekoprihastomo
@ekoprihastomo 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, since MS have unified store it's highly unlikely for them to shut down including its services. MS have ecosystem, your stuff tied to your acc, not to certain console or PC, that's why you can play them on multiple platforms. With Xbox and Win 10 PC you can even set them as offline device with limited functionality if you want to (no game patches, can only log in to acc previously authenticated when online, no chatting, no cloud saves etc), strictly for playing single player offline games, useful for gaming laptop you carry or if you move your console a lot. You have to set it as offline device when you have internet connection though

So you have to PROACTIVELY live replace the battery with jumper wires supplying voltage the whole time like you're defusing a bomb? I get that some laptop batteries have the dead man's circuit because when a lithium battery drops below a certain voltage it will never be safe to charge again... but why would a mains-powered console do this?
