Released 17 years ago now, Sony's PSP was a huge hit and the most capable handheld when it was released.
Given the Sony store is being closed for the PSP this year it's time to have a look at the PSP.
Once again thanks to :-

Last year I bought my first PSP and it became my favourite console ever because it's a great emulation machine for 8-16bit systems and PS1. I just love to play GBA games on it because those games were made for pick up and play in mind.

I was not expecting this from this channel, but this was a wonderful surprise! And wow, this makes me feel OLD! Very interesting, I never owned any version of the PSP, but I remember my brother trying to talk me into getting one by telling me it would work well as a portable Amiga emulator, hahaha.

Half of what I play one it is other retro stuff. Mostly mega drive and amiga stuff. Some amiga games that are mouse based are a pain on it, as the analogue stick does not do a great job of filling in for it.

19:18 Small correction the Vita actually has most of the PSP SoC buried in it. It is missing the second CPU core that was used to assist with certain media tasks but only home-brew ever took advantage of that. The Vita is so accurate that I actually bought one as a replacement PSP given PSP emulation is still hit and miss. The one huge, absolutely gigantic advantage my Vita has over any PSP is the fact I've got the first model Vita (actually I have the 3G enabled one) with the OLED panel, plus I've found that the Vita has a pretty good homebrew scene around it.

As media player, PSP was excellent, it may even overshadow it's primary purpose. Like, when NGage QD was actual, almost half of my friends had it - not as playing device, but as almost most affordable smartphone of the era.

Back in the day, bought a nintendo DS hated it sold it for a PSP 1000. I ended up buying two extended batteries, one to use and one to make a pandora. the pandora ended up bloating a few years later. Years later lent the psp to a friend, she misplaced it and i bought a refurb unit for half price. years later found my original in her bathroom cabinet, had some delamination to the lcd, bought a reproduction lcd on ebay to repair it, and still own it to this day. the second battery is still good to this day. Easily my favorite and if not the best handheld ever made. I have no idea what happened to the standard capacity batteries that came with either console though.

I picked up my first (and only, so far) PSP, a 3000, when the PSP was on its way out in favor of the Vita (and I stopped to glare at the PSP Go on my way down the aisle), and I picked up a bunch of cheap -- but mostly great! -- games and UMD movies over the subsequent years. I was immediately impressed by the picture quality, and while I don't regret going with the DS back when they were both still pretty new, I'm glad I picked up a PSP eventually. Two friends of mine were early adopters, though, and they were always showing up to parties and other gatherings with their PSP's, a handful of UMD games, and memory sticks full of memes to show everyone. At the time, and especially since they had the 1000 and both added larger batteries, the rest of us chuckled at the image of our friends carrying around bricks with them everywhere they went, but they got a ton of use out of them.

I got one from a charity shop last year and I have to say I don't use it was much as I should do. I think it might be due to the fact I always have to charge it, it feels like if you leave it alone for any length of time it will just drain the battery.

PSP UMD disc was a continuation from MiniDisc and it was sized much smaller than 8cm DVD format. Initially, Sony might want to put MiniDisc into PSP but since this format isn't having fully un-eraseable recording capability like standard optical disc format, fearing that somebody might accidentally wiping off contents from pre-made MiniDisc game disk so Sony combining part of MiniDisc tech and also standard optical disc format to form UMD.

They also use fundamentally different technology you can get non re writable minidiscs but they all use magneto optical technology whereas umd’s work more akin to a smaller dvd just being read optically

i remember passing on multiple oppotrunities to get one of these for absurdly cheap when they were new because my brother's shady friends was a prodigious thief. name was rob which is ironic. I'm not a snitch....at least on this occasion because rob showed me his prized nickel plated Beretta every time I ran into him. but I digress, I passed on these new psps that were only going to end up tossed into pawnshop because the advertised features of the psp were seemingly way too good to be true to me. I was super wrong, they delivered on pretty much everything advertised making it an incredible value and on the knife edge of technology at the time. I regret passing on those dodgy psps.

I was duped by the cost-reduced PSP in CeX in 2011, lol. I’d bought a second hand one for £30 when there were 3000s going for £15. I’d bought it as an emulation machine, but got it home and found it was the only un-hackable model at the time >.> But I didn’t know which ones were which at the time - being a child of Nintendo - and the shopkeeper said it was the newest and best one. Well, at least he was only lying about the best part, since it _was_ the newest.

Why "desktop" grade handhelds are dead? Well, cuz' Sony and Microsoft moved to the power-hungry and not so efficient x86 architecture on their main line of consoles while Nintendo's games are usually came with lower hardware reqs. As I don't like Nintendo games I missed new handhelds but Steam deck is interesting for me. Also, as ARM become stronger nowadays and Apple even switched their desktop computers to ARM... maybe if other manufacturers starts to make high-end arm chips(those are comparable with a high-end desktop x86 cpu) maybe we can expect a portable console, like PSP was?! I still have my PSP Phat with tons of memory cards and a custom firmware.

15:40 This wasn't a criminal act. Sony didn't pay artists to commit crimes, they paid artists and the owners of the buildings to allow fake graffiti on the buildings. It was done legally. It drew attention because actual graffiti artists hated that their "pure" art genre was being violated so they'd go waaay out of their way to paint over it.
