Qatar's hosting of the upcoming 2022 World Cup has attracted thousands of migrant workers to build stadiums and other infrastructure. These foreigners left everything behind in search of a better life. But once in Qatar, they often experienced exploitation: unpaid wages, confiscated passports and extreme working conditions that have led to several thousand deaths, according to various NGOs. Some migrant workers agreed to speak to our reporters Chloé Domat and Rammohan Pateriya for this special full-length report. They explain how their Qatari dream has turned into a nightmare, even if Doha also offers some opportunities for upward social mobility.

Yes, and let's be honest...after the World Cup, they will stop talking about it in Qatar too. I am a Kenyan who works in Qatar but as a professional driver. I have stayed in Qatar for 3 years now. There is so much untold truth that the world doesn't know about labourers who work here. Many of them face harsh treatment from their sponsors and they are left to cry for themselves. I personally know a few friends who work illegally because their sponsors threatened to put them behind bars if they dare speak up, no help whatsoever has been given and some had to escape and live out as fugitives. They work in any condition either day or night as long as they have something to meet their needs. They need help and their families back at home can't do anything to help out. It's so sad we are still in slavery

In the Middle east there workers are assigned in tiers based on their nationality and race. Top tier (owner, CEO, president) is for locals, 2nd highest (top managers, consultants, vp, etc) is for Caucasians or the so-called "Western educated" (which just means White), 3rd highest (mid managers) is for arabs from other countries like lebanon, Syria, etc, Then we approach the low tiers. Low level managers and supervisors go to other Arabs, Indians, and sometimes filipinos. The lowest levels are subdivided according to profession and nationality. Hospitality is dominated by Filipinos, sales and commerce by Indians, and the lowest of them all, construction workers and those who clean toilets, etc are Africans, Bangladeshi, etc

The employers are European Companies so why are they not mentioned on this anti Muslim channel (France 24). Shouldn’t these European Companies be held to accountability for slave labour and human rights abuses. As a news channel supposedly caring for the migrant workers why not name the western companies that employ these migrant workers. It’s the western regime’s and the public should understand why they are always interfering in muslim countries and trying to paint a bad image of Qatar and other Muslim countries.

Thank you for this video. It's shocking to learn about these inhumane labor practices happening in a progressive and developed middle eastern country like Qatar. This is like modern slavery wherein millions of foreign migrants--those in construction companies. Their passports being confiscated. If you complain or go on strike, you might be deported. So these migrant workers coming from Africa and Asia were truly exploited and are treated like slaves, working and living in poor conditions. They are not paid well and not even given paid leaves. Imagine, some Filipino women working in beauty or spa salons for 3 years were not given a full day off whereas it was stated in their job contracts that they're entitled to day-offs monthly. It's so funny that out of thousand cases filed in the labor courts by ill-treated migrant workers, only 69 cases have been processed. There's obviously unfair labor practices in Qatar. It's sad and such a shame that it continues to happen that millions of foreign migrant workers, behind those facades of the modern infrastructures like the construction of big sports dome/arenas for the 2022 World Cup were built by the modern slaves of the 21st century.

Low income migrant workers are literally modern day slaves . Especially in construction. This is the people who physically build all skyscrapers in luxury cities in GCC. Their condition in camp is very poor. They get extremely low payment and they work in extreme heat. I know it personally since I was working as an engineer in a construction company in Dubai and I felt so bad and I quit in my 3rd year.

Like that Indian boy, I too did my schooling and spent my childhood in Qatar because of my father's work. It was a safe and convenient lifestyle but that was just about it. Expat Children who grow in the Middle East become coddled and unsure about the realities of life. It was when I went to college in India and later in Europe when I developed full into an adult and was more aware of life's issues. I felt kind of free and never really missed Qatar at all. In fact now that I think of it the memories in Qatar were just with my friends many of whom have either went back to India or left for greener pastures. In the 15 years I have lived there I have never had any contact with a local Qatari boy or girl and I don't know anyone who did. All expats lived within their comfort zone and in a state of denial that they will continue to do so forever. I'm not sure from which state of India these people are from but the the country isn't that bad as media would portray in fact the South of India is really good to retire and my parents have been living well. Most white collared Indians now prefer working in India or else anywhere but the Middle East.

Yes indeed, most expats who grew up/born in the Gulf state, tend to grow up confused as they assume they are Qataris or Saudis, only to be told they need to go back to their original country which becomes a shock to them. They arrive to their Parents country and immediately receive a cultural shock plus they cannot speak in their own Mother Tongue. They mainly speak Arabic. So they end up having to learn their own language. They also get labeled Arabs from their own people. That's the situation for Pakistanis youths who grew up in Saudi Arabia and is a true situation to this day.

We will end migrant labour in Britain. It is a detrimental and ill-conceived practice for all concerned, and does not represent wise stewardship. We will work with our allies to bring an end to this practice worldwide. We will work diligently towards creating vibrant sovereign economies in every country around the world, for an economically balanced and morally principled way of living among nations - so that people will no longer have any cause to envy the wealth of people elsewhere. The wealth of nations comes from the abundance of natural resources that God and Mother Nature have bountifully gifted to each country on earth. From these gifts, the wealth of nations is manifest and built up, from the hard work, enterprise, and yet the prudence, wisdom, and commonsense, of a country's citizens, within their own sovereign nation. Let the resources of each nation be sacred and sovereign to its own citizens alone. We will not practice inequality, exploitation, or appropriation of natural resources in foreign places, but rather make the most of what God has given us in our own homeland, contenting ourselves with living well. We mean this in the material sense, certainly, this being an important standard of doing well in life, a universal for all people everywhere, as well as for us. However, in the future, we will be placing more emphasis on the whole lifeforce of our people, on our spiritual, moral, intellectual, and emotional wellbeing, as well as on our material standard of living. We intend to enjoy our own family life: the eternal springs, yearnings, strivings, and accomplishments, amid the seasons and generations of our own nation. We must seed and grow a better love in our people for their own country, and a sense of duty to their own countrymen, even as we also recognize the benefit and reward to ourselves and others, of a befitting care for our human family and friends around the world. Thank you to France 24 English for this broadcast, and to their reporter, who did such a good job on this documentary. We are grateful for the participants, especially the man from Kenya, Africa, and the lady from the Philippines, whose goodness and human spirit shone through and impressed us. We wish them, their families, and the young man from India and his family, a better and more beneficial future. We hope they will make a safe return, where their presence is needed to build up their home countries.

It's shocking that thousands of people were murdered in hard labor so we could watch football. It's inhuman. This World Cup, which is all about bribery and murder, must be boycotted.

The Saudis treat their workers, maids, nannies etc so atrociously and cruelly that the Philippine govt banned their people from going there to work for years. I hear that the Phillipine govt recently removed that ban. The middle eastern countries reduce workers to slaves and have always been part of the slave trade since the 1600's or before. People howl about slavery in America, but nobody ever mentions the historical and continued slavery in the Middle Eastern countries and how black African slave traders made themselves rich selling black slaves to the middle eastern countries.

I'm stationed over here under the US Army as are a lot of European and Turkish forces. Most of these workers are very nice and are always smiling. You can see the hurt in their eyes. The hard work on their hands. And the toll it takes on them. This is true around most Gulf States. Bahrain, Qatar, UAE, and others.
