THIS. I caught on to where his character arc was heading way back at the end of ep 110 (when you see him realise that he has *finally* pushed Ed too far) and had my notion immediately confirmed in 201, when he had his moment of breakdown with the crew. I *knew* where we were headed and I fully agreed with the narrative of his character arc - did it still shatter my soul? You better f*cking believe it did.

There's a movie from the 80s that I love, and the male lead goes running across the street in the most hilarious way possible. When I watched it with my male bestie for the first time, he quoted the Stewie Griffin line about him running like a Welshman, but I countered that he looked more like you could balance him on a stick in the garden and have his arms and legs going around like windmills. That's a little what Lucius's run reminded me of.

Something that Izzy said to that NO Nose guy, stuck with me... (And makes a perfect sense in gay world of ours). he said - "It's about belonging to something when the world has told you you're nothing... It's about finding the family to kill for when yours is long dead"... Isn't that so touching and beautiful. I didn't know Izzy would end up being my fav character in the end.

I’m usually a hard not-fan of characters dying after finally achieving some happiness, but this worked for me weirdly. I think it’s because Izzy’s new joy wasn’t cut off at the moment he achieved it like I’ve seen before but instead has been content and joking and supported by the crew for a while now. He had time to be in that happiness while being very aware and accepting of the dangerous lifestyle of being a pirate. Like if he had been killed while singing at the Calypso party THAT would more fall into the cheap tragedy feeling, but instead Izzy’s been in vacation-mode half the season. (This is of course not to mention that the seagull landing on his grave could very well be Buttons and in a potential season 3 could use his sea witch powers to bring him back) “I hate writing, I hate storytelling, what I have been studying for like 15 years is büllshit!!”

You're my favorite review maker for OFMD, cause I never cease to be amazed at the depth of conclusions that you make (and have made) based on the plot. Izzy left gracefully. He left at the highest point of understanding the value of love and family, after two or even three near-deaths (especially, of course, after the incident with the failed shot when he was in great despair). He got one last chance to know himself, to know love and in the end to leave surrounded by his found family. Not just leave - but willingly take Blackbeard (as the most destructive part of Ed) with him forever. The part for which Izzy was responsible for so long. "Blackbeard, it was us, you and me". I don't know what could be more beautiful than this. I'll miss Izzy, but his death feels full of meaning to me, full of significance. “There he is” - the phrase that sounded from Izzy to Blackbeard (1x10) and to Ed (2x08). This is... the whole world for me. The biggest star of the season. Their flag means death, guys. Now for real. Also I like that the script left Stede and Ed on the shore, where it could pick them up at any time for the third season. Unlike the Season 1 finale where they were separated and unhappy, now they got a peaceful moment together. They still have to heal all their remaining mental injuries and get used to each other in the third season (will their business go easy? I don't think so), until it logically comes to the wedding. I believe in the thing. They will become completely mature and happy. Thank you for your wonderful reviews and sincere emotions.

Glad the Wife was included, as I asked before! Also, as a self-taught writer myself, I laughed at your mention of writing history. I get the whole "mentor" idea, but personally I viewed Izzy as someone that was starting to become independent for himself, not so much with link with Ed (which I completely forgot about) and felt like his death was too early. Would have gone better if the death was done either in the end of Season 3, if it would green lit, or from a mention someone said in Tumblr with "more episodes in between". Especially for someone like me who didn't give a damn about him in season 1, but loved the development in this season and would have loved to see more of it

I get being upset - I have a hard time rewatching the episode because seeing Izzy go is just so hard - but it makes sense from a narrative standpoint and doesn't mean he's permanently dead in a series where a dude can turn into a bird. Im just gonna highlight that Buttons landed on Izzy's grave. The first time i watched this episode I went WTF!? When have you ever known a season where they're hoping for another and they leave the OTP happy at the end? It wasnt until i read that they wanted it sort of tied up in case of no Season 3 that I got it. I've read an interview where David pretty much went, "Of course the Inn won't work out!" So who knows what'd happen in season 3, considering Stede isn't very good at pirating and Ed doesnt want to be a Pirate anymore. If they can still be together and be happy at the end of season 3 I'll be happy, because i was part of a fandom that did the OTP dirty in the final season.

Like I said I was part of a fandom when they did the OTP dirty. They literally had a MONTAGE of everyone else getting their happy ending. The OTP did end up together at the VERY end but still.

@@victoriaroberts4287 wow I'm curious now as to which fandom!!? But I remember Torchwood where they really did upset everyone by killing so many off including half of the OTP, and then fans were even more cross that his partner didn't say I love you, before he died. So the BBC fixed it all with a series of radio dramas that bought back all the dead characters and undid some of the damage as it were. But that is not something that I think can really happen with most fandoms and times are very different now, only 13 years later.. with so much media.

@@ericamacs3875 the Fandom was Lucifer. Basically they made the protagonist do something that his own father had done to him to his own child and his own child (that had come from the future) telling him to do it: you have to leave and rule over hell, mum don't tell me where he is so I grow up to be angry and resentful towards my dad and come back to seek my revenge. Then the OTP don't get back together until she dies. David Jenkins said there is no OFMD without Izzy, so either that’s it for the show (which I hope not), or Izzy’s gonna come back in some way once or twice. After the pain of good omens, this finale was the semi-best medicine to take ❤ like you said “we don’t need a season 3, but we want one.” In this cancel culture climate, it’s best they ended the show like it IS an end with everything wrapped up and satisfying to be on the safe side.

I just wanna say that I love that y’all had such a positive initial reaction to this finale! I stayed up til 2am (when the eps dropped in my time zone) to watch every new episode this month, including this one, and I don’t know if it was because I was sleep deprived, or anxious, or what, but I initially had a very mixed reaction. I felt like everything was happening so fast this episode that I didn’t get time to process a lot of things. I already had heard people speculating that Izzy was gonna die because apparently Max for some reason released some BTS footage that included scenes of them filming the grave, so I wasn’t surprised when it happened. However, I also wasn’t really sad, because even though I really appreciate Izzy’s growth this season (I did not like him at all in S1 no matter how many times I rewatched it over the past 1.5 years), I felt like his death scene happened so quickly it almost felt… unserious and added in last-minute for angst reasons? It also just felt jarring to go so quickly from Izzy dying, to the crew burying him, to Zheng immediately asking Ed and Stede to help her hunt down Ricky set to the jaunty OFMD music, to the wedding, then to Stede and Ed staying behind to be innkeepers. I watched the episode again the following day with my husband, and I actually like and appreciate it a lot more now, though I still think the pacing was pretty rushed towards the end. However, I’m not blaming David or the OFMD crew - they did a phenomenal job with what Max gave them (2 less episodes, only 30 mins per episode, less budget), but it’s just so evident that the plots of eps 7&8 would have flowed much better if they had been stretched over 4 eps instead of 2. It’s been very interesting to see how polarizing this finale was - dare I say, even more polarizing than the s2 finale of Good Omens. Of course I feel for the Izzy stans, because I know exactly how painful it is when a character you hyperfixate on and love so much dies. I felt a similar pain after watching the S1 finale of OFMD the day it dropped, when there was absolutely no guarantee that we would even get a season 2. I was pretty mentally unwell for the next couple of weeks, and I hyperfixated *hard* on OFMD for at least a good month and a half after that. So while I’m not a huge fan of the innkeepers ending for Gentlebeard this season, I’m so grateful that David did not try to do anything to split them up again as another cliffhanger. I also think that Izzy’s death makes narrative sense, and I don’t think it’s bad writing to kill him off - I didn’t think it was bad writing for Stede and Ed to end S1 separated, though it was definitely painful. Interestingly, it seems to me that a lot of the people who have had more positive reactions to this finale and S2 as a whole are the people who very recently got into OFMD like you did. Like I saw some people who said they just binged all of S1 and S2 yesterday and loved it. I think a lot of us who waited 1.5 years for S2 had pretty high expectations, which were bound to not all be completely met. I still adore this show though, and I’m planning on doing a full binge starting from S1 again to see how it all flows back to back. Sorry for the long ass comment lol. I really enjoy your videos, and I’m excited to see your upcoming reactions to more gay content! Are you planning on reacting to Heaven Official’s Blessing S2? As a fan of the book I adore it already!! ❤

i'm mad but i get it. it's not QUITE redemption = death, because i think izzy got his redemption by the end of episode 4. but god do i hate losing such a great character. and god do i wish they'd been able to make this episode longer so we could sit with the really emotional beats for a minute. honestly the part that annoys me most about izzy's death is that other characters have survived worse, INCLUDING IZZY. i mean, ed JUST survived serious head trauma, general blunt-force trauma, and a likely multi-day coma. but an asshole prince fires at izzy without looking and manages a fatal wound? the man survived having his leg cut off and didn't apply a tourniquet until AFTER he regained consciousness. (yes you could argue that that made it harder to survive even more blood loss, but like. goddamn.) again, it makes complete narrative sense to have him die here. and i am glad they didn't go the heroic sacrifice route, because that would have definitely tipped it into redemption = death territory. but why did it have to be like THIS? i guess that's what fix-it fic is for, though, eh?

I totally get the "If you were ever good at anything, go and do that you bum!," but I would love for Ed to have even a quarter of the opportunity to be really terrible at something long enough to get better at it, the way Stede has. Part of what I think he was so charmed by back in 1.4 was Stede's beginner's mind-- how fresh everything about piracy was for him, and how much he relished learning. I think Ed envied that, and you can't have that experience and be competent at the same time. So maybe he isn't going to have that experience with fishing, but I hope he has it with *something*. I love that Ed gets a second Bond girl entrance walking out of the ocean in his leathers.

I would have liked Izzy to continue on with his growth and find some happiness. I agree with The Wife that "[y]ou don't have to have someone represent the past and die [etc.]." It's kind of a worn-out trope when you could let a character have his own growth and move on from only being in service to another character. I was spoiled for his death, though, so I don't think I had the reaction some people did. But I was very interested when someone suggested the birdman could return (which seems to have somewhat happened) and he could be brought back. Maybe not now, though.

I think that killing Izzy was kind of okay writing, in a way that it wasn't bad, but it wasn't good either. Firstly, it wasn't inevitable and necessary for progress. In fact, I think it would have been much better for Izzy and Ed to choose to part ways. Secondly, it reduced Izzy to an aspect of Ed's psyche, when he could have been his own character. Ed and Izzy were this toxic relationship that could end with one cut away from the other but it could just as well have ended in both free and finding their own life. Also, in light of Izzy's death, Stede's parting with a crew doesn't hit the mark for me. Stede isn't done with piracy yet and the crew is his family. But Ed doesn't want to do this anymore, he hasn't since season 1 and it's a big conflict of interests between them. If Ed gave his place on the New Revenge to Izzy, and decided to stay with Ed... I think that would be as much if not equally impactful, and two farewells - between Ed and Izzy, and between Stede and the crew - could easily be made just as emotional.

I wish they had played La Vie En Rose over Izzy's death, or better still, have the crew sing it to him and callback to them singing it together in the credits of episode six, only they realise that there will never be 'one more song'. The lyrics would have fit so tragically. Really show us rather than just tell us that he dies surrounded by family instead of 'youre born alone, you die alone', bring the crew in close rather than hold them back to stand and watch. And God, I thought they would have had him die saving the others, saving his crew because he found his belonging with them. It's still meaningful, but I'm cursing whoever cut those extra two episodes from their budget, they really could have used the screentime.

I absolutely hate that some people have taken their feelings getting hurt by what happened (which is valid, don't get me wrong) as permission to harass David and the writers or wishing the show doesn't continue so no one else is happy with it when they're not. That's just being horrible and they need to learn how to handle themselves appropriately 😐 And hating a choice the show made doesn't make it bad, either. I retroactively liked Izzy in season 1 (after it had ended and before season 2), and I fucking loved him this season. First thing I thought when he died was that maybe it was like Ewen Bremner and Buttons, that Con O'Neill couldn't do season 3 so they wanted Izzy to go out with a bang. Second thing was that Izzy didn't really seem upset that he was dying, because he went out fighting for the crew, for their family. The show made it very clear, since the first episode this season, that Izzy was more than willing to sacrifice himself for the crew. And that was what he did, and he went with the knowledge that Ed, someone he loved, was getting better and that he had their family. So I was sad that Izzy died, but to me it was okay, because I think Izzy was at peace. Also, if it's really that Con can't stay in the show, I don't see a way for Izzy to leave besides death, because the only life he wanted was being a pirate with Ed and the crew. I don't see him wanting to retire and become an innkeeper, for example. If Izzy needed to leave, I think it could only be through death.

I thought it was really cute when they were pronounced mateys at the wedding, because it reminds me of matelotage. (Ah, the French. Inventors of mayonnaise.) Anyway, it was a sort of partnership contract, in which "matelots" pledged loyalty to one another, vowed to fight by the other's side and work in their common interest, and usually involved inheritance of the other's property in the event of their death. Most historians think it was a fairly platonic arrangement, but we know better.

I'm still processing the thing, and will have to go back for a full rewatch, but your reactions have been - as they usually are - one of the best (if not the actual best) things about getting into a new series or revisiting an old one. Keep doing what you do, and please take care of yourself. ❤❤

The only thing i have an issue with is the last 10 min. Not because izzy died but because they tried to cram to much on it and it gave me whiplash. I could have done without the wedding (love lupete but they were already engaged. So the wedding could have being left for fanfic) so the last fight was longer and izzy getting shot have not being so underwelming. He could have being fataly shot protecting ed or stede (which will have being better consindering how many times he tried to kill him in s1). But thats about it. I saw izzy dying from episode 1 of this season tbh.

I’m still not over Izzy’s death. 🖤🦄 Bless AO3, it has been my happy place. I do agree it works… fine narratively, but as someone who absolutely fell for Con’s acting in season 1, it bloody well hurts to lose him after season 2. I knew it was coming because of how much focus he was getting, & honestly how brilliant both the writing & his acting were. He should definitely win an Emmy next year, but in a Queer, fantasy-tinged show? I don’t think that gives him much of a chance. (Look how long it took Tatiana Maslany to win for Orphan Black) Here’s hoping that people push for him to receive the recognition he deserves. Also, I really hope there is a 3rd season where they get to explore the rest of the family more. And I hope Con comes back as the ‘chorus’ in some of the crew’s head. He can be the voice of reason with a sword, no shirt, & a beautiful tenor. 💜🌈🏴‍☠️

Omg Brittany from The Ship’s Closet?! Omg fancy meeting you here in the gay pirate fandom! When Ed & Stede referred to each other as ‘friend’ I got such flashbacks to whenever Kirk & Spock would refer to each other as ‘friend’ and we’d be like no but see, they mean it in a gay way, because t’hy’la… and now here are Ed & Stede calling each other ‘friend’, but they really do mean it in a gay way because they just had sex in the last episode and they really are actually gay in the show. Can you believe we even have a show like this? It feels like we’re watching fanfiction of the show it’s so wild. I kind of can’t even process that this show exists sometimes.

I think Izzy's death could have worked, but I think they did it badly. Not through any story beats really (though a more notable death than Ricky just spinning around to shoot him might be better.) I think the issue was pacing and the extra hour they're missing from season one was most notable here. This definitely felt like three episodes squished into one. It felt like there was relatively little narrative pay off because there was no time to grieve him before suddenly, wham, a wedding, boom, gentlebeard has the inn. Didn't let you set with his death at all imo. But hey, they can still totally bring Izzy back after seeing fan reaction to how much he became a favorite. They set up the gravy boat idea already and Buttons the sea witch landed on his grave. Make it work lol.

I'm actually really angry about Izzy's end. I couldn't enjoy Lucius and Black Pete's wedding which is something I was looking forward to. I think for a show about healing and growth, he should've been able to live with his new outlook on life. And in my personal opinion, it is not satisfying for a character who tried to commit suicide to die as an end to an arc. Also, I'm really upset that Stede and Ed didn't get an onscreen talk about opening an inn. Like their whole narrative was they were on two different paths and Stede liked being a pirate. There wasn't even a convo about giving up piracy?

All season 2 was rushed, I can't understand why, maybe because of the budget, I don't know, all I know is that everything was rushed, it left some questions and yes, Izzy's death was completely unnecessary. Why? Because he "symbolise" Ed's old life as Blackbeard? Ed could still have a new life, he and Stede could still open the inn while Izzy left with the others. I get the point, but still, it was unnecessary. I admit to being very disappointed with this season, I much prefer the first one. I don't need a third season, if that's how it has to end, fine, but I honestly don't care for a sequel.

i’m glad that you liked the ending, and i apologize in advance for the rant that i am about to go on, but. i have never been so pissed off at a show in my entire fucking life. i’m not gonna say that izzy’s death didn’t make narrative sense, or that it was out of nowhere, because it wasn’t. i will however say that i think they handled it incredibly poorly. first of all, there’s the issue with ed. imo ed was meant to be a sort of abusive partner in the beginning of the season. he did horrible things to all of the crew, but specifically izzy. and yeah. izzy did some shit too, but in no way did he deserve everything ed put him through. and then they pretty much did fuck all to have ed actually redeem himself, everyone just forgave him after like one episode of him feeling sorry for himself. after all of that. for them to have izzy’s last act alive be to fucking apologize to ed, and for the show to frame it as if he had to do that. fuck that. absolutely fuck that. second, izzy never fucking talked about everything that he went through with anyone. he was traumatized, he tried to kill himself, he became an alcoholic, then he *seemed* to be getting better but that was basically just because he was pretending all that shit didn’t happen, and then he’s shot in the most unceremonious way possible and dies while everyone just stands around and doesn’t even try to help and then he’s buried in the yard like a fucking dog. he was a sailor his whole life, they should have given him a burial at sea, or at least buried him *with* the unicorn leg. and then, IMMEDIATELY after, everyone seems to just fucking forget about him. we just move on like he wasn’t even important. again, i’m sorry to be so negative. it doesn’t feel great to talk shit about a show i liked this much. i truly am glad that you enjoyed it, and i’m never going to say that you’re wrong for that rant over lmao

No because this is literally exactly how I feel. I feel like I might’ve been able to accept Izzy’s death if they had just handled it better. What really irked me about it is that they spent the entire season letting Izzy find himself OUTSIDE of Ed only to have him die to serve Ed’s arc 😑 and omfg don’t even get me started on the lack of reaction from the crew. Not even fang was crying. FANG. And you’re so right about it being a dumb ass way to die considering what they’ve all survived thus far. Auntie can survive an exploding ship but iz can’t survive a gun shot by a lousy minor prince?? What???

Things I'm mad about: he died by complete accident. He didn't even sacrifice himself like everyone was hoping (?). Nobody thought to check Ricky for a gun? The crew did not love Ed. It was Izzy who they loved like family. Izzy was his own person, not an element of someone else. A lot of people related deeply to him, he wasn't just a favorite character. I won't even be coming back for s3 honestly. Im one of the people it burned too much. I'll watch you watch it tho lol.

People saying that tumblr is crazy for thinking it makes no narrative sense? saying it's toxic? yes, parts of it are, parts of it forget that characters arent real people, but i don't think it's toxic to say that the way Izzy died was ENTIRELY contradictory to his arc this season, and it was pretty frustrating that after distancing himself from Ed finally and showing that the crew was more important to him, that his dies in Ed's arms reassuring Ed that he, a formerly suicidal character, WANTS this and Ed is more important, while the crew watched silently from ten steps away? Also, Jenkins said it WAS a mentor death, but i 100% disagree because they spent the whole season establishing Izzy as his own separate non-Blackbeard-dependant character, and so far the relationship has been far more push and pull than a parental relationship. it was super rushed. Also saying that the crew is ed's family only for Ed to immediately run of with his boyfriend a scene later? Of course im upset he died, but i acknowledge that the story could very naturally lead there and it was the plan all along. HOWEVER it could have been done WAYYYYYY better. i do not think it was a "good death".

Nah imo narratively izzy's death made no sense. IF he still clung to the old ways then you could make an argument that it was symbolic but the show MADE SURE to show us that he was changing so what was the point of his death then? Djenkins literally said it was bc he liked a trope but he never wrote that trope in the first place. "A mentor/father figure dying" but he kept saying izzy was like a jilted lover and that its a love triangle, make it make sense. And Ed never put Izzy on a mentor kinda like pedestial or even listened to him so what mentorship??? Ed and Izzy didnt even have ONE emotional scene after ep 3, am i supposed to feel bad? Feel that Ed suddenly cared so much? And then they have a 10 seconds funeral where Ed is like "welp there is that, anyway" lol. So did he or did he not care? Not to mention Izzy's speech to Ed, what family? These people barely tolerated Ed and had to be convinced by Stede to let him on board. It was IZZY's family. Letting Ed have Izzy's emotional resolution to his arc was so weird and out of place. And also i think its in a bad taste that a character that was tortured, mutilated, whose arc actually involved his disability and he had tried to commit suicide says "i want to go" and dies..... Really poor taste. Not to mention the finale ruined Ed and Stede too. Stede suddenly wants to settle down??? 10 mins ago he wanted to be a pirate. Ed still doesnt know what he wants in life. Feels like they just paired them together again for plot reasons and to appease fans. This whole season they made one step forward and two steps back which was really frustrating. Stede at least had some development OUTSIDE of Ed. But Ed went on this journey alone and it felt like he kept repeating himself. Isolating him from everyone else was a bad decision imo cause he had no one to bounce off from like Stede had Izzy. What i kinda expected was a good omens s2 kinda thing. Where the characters separate to have independent growth. In ofmd's case it would be a more conscious desicison than in good omens where Stede and Ed want to find out what they want to do in life with a promise to come back to each other but alas. I like to believe s2 ended with ep 6 cause after that the show REALLY suffered from crammed story lines and rushed pacing. I could blame MAX but djenkins KNEW what he had to work with so it was bad planning on his part as well.

You're summing up my feelings quite well. Make it make sense. Izzy can't be part of a love triangle and a jilted ex at the same time as being a father figure/menthor Also the crew doesn't love Ed. They learned to love Izzy. I would have been way more content about his death if it wouldn't have been so pathetic. He didn't even die fighting. Plus the whole burying him on land thing annoys me so much

@@NavaeraGreenleaf88Y’all are entitled to your feelings of course, but I don’t get how his death was “pathetic.” What would have been a non-pathetic death? Not every death has to be a noble sacrifice… it’s more realistic if it’s not. It’s a thing that almost always happens unexpectedly. As for the crew not loving Ed… I don’t believe that’s true at all. At least, it doesn’t have to be. They definitely care about him, and even though they likely don’t fully trust him now, it doesn’t mean they don’t love him. He is/was a fucked up guy, but it’s a lot more complicated than that. You voiced your criticisms normally, which I appreciate, but I want to take the time to say that I think some people took Izzy’s death way too personally-as if it were an attack on them. I really related to Izzy, and I get not wanting a disabled queer character to die, but this isn’t another “kill the minority” trope as some have been saying. I believe the people who are treating this as an “unjustifiable act” are too caught up in the fanon version of Izzy.

@@Werileyz Hey thanks for your reply. I feel he died to make way for Ed becoming Ed. It would have been a lot better if he died fighting imho. Or even better to go into actual retirement. It doesn’t make sense that the only crewmember with an actual wooden leg is in charge of the minor prince. Plus I hate that they didn’t even bury his wooden leg with the rest of his body. Can't really comment about the trope thing. I'm neither queer nor disabled. But from what I understand it gave people the message that the only way to move on from trauma is death I just overall wish there would have been more talking things through. Imho nothing is solved here.

@@NavaeraGreenleaf88 What you’re saying makes sense. Also, I fully agree on the whole not burying his leg with him thing haha. I can see where you’re coming from with the whole “the only way to move on from trauma is death” thing. I think it could have been handled a little better, but all in all I wasn’t too disappointed. I happen to be a queer disabled man with ptsd, and maybe this isn’t what most others like me who are in the fandom believe, but I kinda see myself in all of the characters in little ways. I think trauma is a big theme of the series and is a thing that applies to everyone, which is why Izzy’s death didn’t piss me off much. If he were the only victimized character and he died that would be another story!! Anyways, I really enjoyed reading your thoughts. There are always gonna be problems with shows, and I think more people need to just find some middle ground, or at least not attack each other. Lol… I downloaded Twitter for the first time ever after watching the finale because I was so sure people would have some things to say…and boy was I right!! Needless to say I think I’ll be staying off that app for a good while. Healthy discussion is great-I just think some people are wayyyy too invested. I mean, I get it, because OFMD certainly gave me a lot to love and a lot to think about, but it’s important to keep in mind that it’s fictional.
