3 жыл бұрынBurgess set out his politics thus. 'I loathe the State. I hate all republics. To take socialism seriously is ridiculous. All we can do is keep pricking our government all the time, disobeying all we dare (we have livings to earn), asking why, maintaining a habit of distrust.'

Superb channel by the way. Love your films and analysis. Have you seen William F Buckley's Firing Line interview with Burgess. Burgess is superb and Buckley, who I like very much, I think makes a decision to enjoy the ride.

Great review. Didn't he write briefly for a communist party publication when living abroad (Malaya). I think he refers to this in the documentary, the Burgess Variations. If so, I suspect it was purely to occupy a contrarian position against the crushing and energy sapping politics of the ruling regime. Much later, I think he was supportive of the monarchy when living in Monocco. I know he was an admirer of Princess Grace. Good choice.

@D C 'I hate all republics' is indeed compelling, when you look at, say, the DPRK, the USSR, the GDR, or any African tyranny you care to name. On the other hand, the American republic didn't do too badly until the rot set in from about 1960.
