Some people have a magic touch with babies. Babies just know. When I was 10 yrs old babies just began to be attracted to me. I could be anywhere, the grocery store, in an elevator, in church, in doctor's waiting room, and babies and little children just reached out for me and cried if they could not go to me. What always amazed me was that total strangers would just hand their precious little person over to me as if they had known me forever!!! Once when I was an adult, while in church, a mother with two walking age children, and twin baby girls about 9 months old came in and sat behind me. The babies were fussy and sleepy. I turned and asked if I could hold one while she held the other, and I never saw somebody hand over their baby so fast. She snuggled into my neck and was out like a light turned off. Mother's baby was still wiggling and squirming and fussy, so I turned and said "Trade you!" And she did!! Out like her twin. The lady behind her leaned forward and said "She's the lady who runs our local daycare 6 days a week in town." ( Yes I did.) The mother said back "No she's the angel from heaven I asked God to send when I came to church this morning." In my teen years, i was a very popular sitter and two families were angry with each other, when the other contracted my sitter services on Friday and Saturday evenings. I was so happy when my sister was old enough to sit too. and since those families were across the street neighbors, my sister would bring the kids over to play. My saddest moment ever was when I was eleven and was visiting family friends. The eldest married daughter was on a date night away with her husband but their 1 month old baby was being taken care of by the grandparents. The infant was on her grandma's shoulder crying, wouldn't be comforted, and grandma had 9 other hungry children plus my family's 6 and the adults to feed. I took the infant and he settled his forehead against my neck where the pulse is strong and let out a long sigh like a baby who had been crying too much. He slept and slept, even while i ate my dinner. Everybody knew my way with a babies and Grandma Rose said this is the best sleep the baby has had. The only thing that bothered me was, every so often, the baby would moan, a sound I never heard any baby make except for my sister. That tiny moan became more and more frequent, and it scared me. After about four hours, I told my mom "This baby is very very sick like Susanne." Mom listened to me and told Grandma Rose to get the baby to the hospital immediately. X-rays showed that his upper intestines had telescoped down into the lower intestines which were trying to digest them. He could not be saved. He died before his parents could arrive back from their date. I cried for many days, until my Mom told me that in my arms, he felt comforted with no pain. He had not cried the whole 4 hours, until he was taken out of my arms.
