Penguins are odd birds. For one, they cannot fly (but they are amazing swimmers), and, contrary to popular belief, the majority of penguin populations live in warmer waters. But these beloved birds are in danger, with populations declining up to 90%. Dyan deNapoli explains the reasons behind the decline -- and why penguins are like the proverbial canary in the coal mine of our oceans.
Lesson by Dyan deNapoli, animation by Zedem Media.

Why is it so hard for humans to accept all the things they have done wrong and try to fix it? What is so offensive about accepting that we are ruining the earth and we need to fix it? People get so mad at the idea that they are doing anything wrong at all to the Earth. Who cares about politics, don't you want to do all you can to make the Earth healthier and safer for future generations and animals who share it?

One thing about the human psyche. There is an odd dilemma where we are both social beings but also incredibly selfish. Without a decent dose of emotion it is easy to ignore and deny something that isn’t personal or in your immediate (space/time) vicinity. At least for the standard population. The difference between us and politicians is that they have a money incentive too.

The best thing about penguins is that if you catch them at the right time, they can transform into 40 foot tall robotic cybertrons with plasma guns and magnetic forcefields. They still can't fly though.

It's great to preserve penguins and all but one of the biggest tragedies is that equally endangered species of animals and plants (yes endangered plants) are ignored even if they are cheaper and easer to save and are very important to their ecosystems because they are not as cute or fearsome or relatable or whatever other trait that make the appealing to humans.

I would have preferred some specificity as to how these are endangered. One would think with whaling and over-fishing that they would be most vulnerable to pollution or an increase in their predators.

How specific do you need the info to be? Both overfishing and global warming are pretty obvious in how they would affect penguins.
@LeGioNoFZioN
@LeGioNoFZioN 10 жыл бұрын
global warming is too vague a term, I want specifics as to how changing climate is negatively affecting them, with record cold in the antarctic is this threatening their ability to survive ? if so, how could it be rectified by any current proposals to address climate change. and with over-fishing, is it depleting the stocks they rely on for survival, or is it pushing animals like sea lions, seals and walrus's to lean towards a more penguin rich diet ? one would assume with an ecosystem in peril the life at the top of those foods chains would be more indicative of the food chains collapse. So are these same trends shown in the whale and sea lion populations ? pop science is the worst kind of science because it has less to do with science and more to do with political policy. changing your actions in accordance with pop science is no more prudent than doing so in accordance with your local tarot card readers predictions.
@LeGioNoFZioN
@LeGioNoFZioN 10 жыл бұрын
***** I tend to not take people's word for things especially when specifics are not provided. Erratic storms is a misnomer since storms are by nature hard to predict. ocean currents are a larger factor, and if they are atypical then that may be a significant factor, but if that atypical current pattern is limited, at least as far as duration is concerned, then that should also be a part of the discussion

+Paula Bean When the ecology of the entire ocean is being altered by human activity, 'protecting' some small islands local habitats probably wont be enough to save the population there.
@PaulaBean
@PaulaBean 8 жыл бұрын
scottabc72 Well, humankind is also a product of Nature and Evolution. Maybe it is meant to be that our species alters the planet in certain ways. Or maybe it's just coincidence, perhaps even unavoidable! ;-)
@scottabc72
@scottabc72 8 жыл бұрын
I guess its unavoidable if people just engage in mental masturbation when we need to commit to doing things differently in order to save other species and maybe ourselves. 'Evolution' has no values, if a 'successful' species wipes out its own food source and goes extinct as a result thats all part of evolution. We have a choice because we are conscious of our larger effect.
@PaulaBean
@PaulaBean 8 жыл бұрын
scottabc72 It remains a matter of perspective, though. The Incas were convinced they could secure their food sources by sacrificing people. In hindsight, we can say they were wrong. Maybe future generations will look back upon us and wonder why we thought that conservation was ever an issue for human continuity.
@rae_diant
@rae_diant 8 жыл бұрын
+Paula Bean Humans are an invasive species. we have polluted the seas and we are overpopulated, causing us to go further and further into habitats and ecosystems that we did not previously live in, nor are we fit to live in without our technology. If you listened to the video, many penguin species fit a very specific niche in their ecosystems. If they are gone, the balance of those ecosystems will be disrupted, resulting in unprecedented consequences. Humans were not meant to be in these places, yet we are the greatest threat to them. Our waste alone has far reaching effects that have never been seen in history ever. Our world and the populations on it simply were not made to support this overuse of resources, including us humans. it won't be long after these species die out that we will be endangered as well.
