David Goodhart suggests that a new social division has been created: between the mobile ‘achieved’ identity of the people from Anywhere, and the marginalised, roots-based identity of the people from Somewhere. This schism accounts for the Brexit vote, the election of Trump, the decline of the centre-left, and the rise of populism across Europe.

59% of leave voters were middle class (A B C1). 36% (AB). 17% (C2) 52% from south of England, but result being blamed on northern working class. WTF!

Celestial Teapot That's not true and you didn't mentioned the age of those voters. The only way the middle classes would have voted for Brexit is if they were racists. I remember that after the Referendum the percentages in the press were different. Can I ask where did you get yours?

America is divided. During our election we heard so much of the 'Us VS Them' or 'Educated VS Uneducated'...I hate that and I hate how polarizing it is. This description of the 'Somewhere VS Anywhere' is I think an excellent summary of the current division...

Uh, no. It means the opposite. We're divided. They aren't. The government is the most important entity standing between the corporate elite and the rest of the world. By dividing us, we are allowing the powerful to accumulate more power.

Would a Basic Universal Income damage these people's sense of identity? It seems like a good solution to a demographic that is unwilling to change or move, at least they won't starve. But if they demand that their old economies continue to exist (by being artificially propped up) so that they can feel useful - that could be a problem.

roidroid exactly! I am dedicating a lot of mental time to this topic. It looks like the constant technological change is going to exacerbate things further.

UBI won't help but merely emphasis the problems welfare produces. The best way to address this is to push very UK bias policies to everything from economics, education etc and always put the rest of the world 2nd. Watch how quickly economic prosperity and national happiness increase.

It's always supposed to be the fault of Liberals. We are always the convenient scapegoat. Not austerity which Liberals did not ask for. No always blame the cultured people, it's their fault not throwing themselves under the bus, to accommodate someone else's unimaginative traditionalism.

We're heading towards a paradigm shift. Our choice is whether the transition will be peaceful or violent.
