Choose position 1, 2 or 3 and stick with it. This is a great tip for new trio players, so we really need to talk about it.
The position 1, 2, 3 model is an attempt to structure team fights and trio comps. Each character plays a certain role and that’s how you improve your team’s coordination and avoid chaos.
Position 1 is the character that starts the fight and calls a target to focus. Their job is to structure the fight for the rest of the team and initiate fast and decisive executions.
Position 2 follows up closely, flanks and peels for position 1 if needed. Position 2 needs to enable the game plan position 1 set in motion. They cannot run off on their own and play “solo trios”.
Position 3 plays a little more in the back, supporting the team with abilities, ranged and hit-and-run melee attacks. They keep the overview of the fight, spot third parties and call when to retreat. Also, if the team has a Moonbane Charm, they hold it and cast it.

I'm quite new to trio and this seems like a good plan.. Thanks! Without realizing it, I've been playing mostly position 3, but also some position 2. I think for players like me, if you join with better trio players it's very good to have an idea what is expected from you, and a general idea of different type of team compositions (character types, not necessarily the pro compositions). These kind of things are very tricky in the start, and not having some kind of trio identity/role (even if it's more than one) makes for a big mess generally speaking. I've played plenty of those games (randoms), so I know it..

I like how this guide is very general but still mentions all the really important parts of each position. Good job Penemue (and everyone else that helped to create this video)!

Beautiful advice! I think it’s really hard to find a team that’s on the same page tbh

yeah, in this video, i try to give people an idea of what's expected when they play trios. people should know that it's not normal for pos2 players to choose their own targets while pos1 is fighting, or for supports to go in first. but most people actually don't know this, and i hope this video will help semi-related: what i can recommend if you don't have a fixed team: just invest into yourself by playing solos, 0bans, going free training to study mechanics, watching pro vods, etc. you can't skip the process of learning the game, and in some cases, grinding trios daily with the same people can even distract you from it

In my team, I am the healer but I am also the position 1. Every team I met never expect Kurumi going in alone so they extremely focused on Kurumi. Never did they know, we prepare a bigger bomb on their flank 😂

In my team, rather than pos 1/2/3, we have S/V/R. S job is in the front and play almost separate to look for points of interest, either fights or safe spots and the bringer of moonbane; must be able to go in, get out, and avoid fights extremely fast. V job is to confirm POI or innitiates fights and the one to make every decision during fights including but not limited to targets, time to heal, who must have aggro, and escape time; must be a capable fighter. R job is to play at the back near V and follow-up and combo up with V and the only one to decide and the first to respond to S rescue request.

Can you make a guide that goes into detail how each meta team comp works? I see transformers, viper comp, box comp, etc in your video, but I don't understand how each character synergizes with each other or what the general gameplan is for each team.

This would be a 4 hour video that gets obsolete with the next balance update... I'd say watch my viper comp guide, it's with yoto instead of Tessa, but it doesn't change that much. And for the rest I'll see what I can do

Thanks for sharing your knowledge! Does Justina play position 3 when she replaces Feria in the cannonball comp? Is she supposed to hit-and-run until she gets the opportunity to snipe two or more opponents with her ult? And what does she do to help the team when they are losing the fight?
@Penemue
@Penemue 2 ай бұрын
i haven't looked into the justina version of that comp much, but since she can freeze feria and zai pretty well, perhaps the justina version would be a good counter pick against those comps. justina's main job is to hunt the characters she counters, but i'm not sure if that's effectively gonna be her taking an iso 1v1 or teamplaying with the other characters, forcing enemy ults, peeling with freezes etc. but since justina has great mobility, she can basically be in every position at the same time. without additional research, if you just want my speculation, i'd say that the traditional pos123 model doesn't apply to the justina version of that comp, or there is relatively little value in looking at that comp with the model in mind. though keep in mind that yueshan can sometimes take a position 3 role in any comp against certain enemy comps, e.g. against viper comp and temulch comp where he needs to make sure he doesn't get F'd and can always ult for countercontrol

Hey Penemue. Thanks a lot for this guide! I have a question for you because I think I didn't totally understand something. Can a player who is position 1 play a character that is mainly for position 2 ? For example: can the shotcaller plays Temmy and the player who is position 2 plays Takeda in box comp ? Thanks again for your guide, it helps me a lot to understand more about positions. I started to train with some friends for tournaments and I hope that someday, we'll manage to make things happen.
@Penemue

between takeda and temulch, it isn't that clear who is position 1 or 2. both can play as both, and both are sometimes required to lead engages, depending on the enemy comp. some teams would even argue that temulch is the better pick for pos 1 right now, while takeda would be the more "traditional" pick for it in the past. i'd say don't worry about it for box comp, that comp doesn't require much coordination anyway compared to other comps for a new team, what's important is that the same person leads engages all the time. because if you keep swapping your pos 1 around, you will notice that your team plays at an inconsistent speed in tournaments. initiating fast is something you have to train, having 3-4 people learn it and apply it in a tournament is way harder than only having 1 person learn it and apply it for a very experienced team, you don't need a clear shotcalling structure at least for regional tournaments, since people will be able to spot opportunities on their own, and usually recognize the importance of following up with whoever leads an engage, no matter who it is. but most teams are unable to play fast or sync up which each other, so these teams benefit a lot from implementing one

what weapons are adapted to each position? (if each weapon can only go to one position, which one it is?)

Ideally imo you’d want to have dagger/fan w 3, haulbrds/polesword 2, 1 any high dmg weapon

will probably make a separate video on what weapons to use, although there is a lot more to it than just positions
