Wild card Jack Draper is the 2023 UTS Grand Final champion, beating Holger Rune 12-14, 15-12, 13-10, 19-7 to win the title.
Draper had never played UTS before Friday - but claimed the trophy having dropped just two quarters across his five matches in London.
After a slow start and a racquet smash, Rune used his bonus card smartly to bring himself level 8-8, and kept at his tough task to take the first quarter 14-12 - assisted by Draper’s failure with his own bonus card again.
But The Power finally got his bonus card working for him to move 14-11 in front in the second quarter - and despite a brilliant rally with amazing shot-making from both players as the clock ticked past zero, he held his nerve to level up, 15-12.
Rune smashed a ball into the crowd with frustration during the third quarter as he fell 8-4 behind, and it did seem to fire him up to narrow the gap. But Draper’s defence was superlative, and Rune tried to gather himself before serving again, leading to his second time violation of the match. The Power served the quarter point to wrap it up 13-10 and move in front for the first time in the final.
The Viking used his bonus card early in the first quarter to try and claw back some of Draper’s 3-0 lead, but he could do nothing to stop Draper’s fizzing return diagonally across the court and out of his reach.
And very soon The Power was out of Rune’s reach on the scoreboard as well. With coach James Trotman reminding him to take his time and allow the clock to tick down, Draper’s beautiful forehand was by now almost perfect.
And when Trotman nudged him to take his bonus card, it was the forehand again that got the three points, sending the ball across the net at the acutest of angles.
He wrapped up the quarter 19-7 and with it claimed the title.

This was my first ever tennis event I've seen in person and this final had EVERYTHING, I absolutely loved it and Draper has a new fan :)

The tickets are much more reasonable than other tennis events. If UTS held events in the Northeast, I'd attend. LA was their only American tournament of 2023.

Well done Jack. I don't like all aspects of this format but I like that its continuous and every point counts. Its not like a deuce game with multiple advantages both sides and after 15mins you end up with zero

This event is a very good example of where tennis should never end! Booming music, even during the rallies and in between, stupid interviews during the match, counting like for untrained housewives so that it's not too exhausting. Everything fast, fast...fast food tennis. But in times of social media, tiktok and Instagram, people's attention span is no longer than 30 minutes.

@@johannatom688 The nicknames are garbage (save for Rune & Draper who kept things simple), but it beats trying to pronounce or spell a bunch of ethnic Eurasian names with too many consonants. PM is all marketing. To say nothing of the drugs he pushed, allegedly. It was well known behind the scenes that PM was an easy route to drugs for struggling female players. They would all switch to him for easy access. People turned a blind eye for years. The turning point was: 1) Haleptosis so one-sidedly beating Serena in the WC '19 final. That was a major red flag. 2) PM going to work with Halepdopsis before Serena was officially retired. It rubbed people the wrong way & was seen in poor taste. Not a good look for either of them. Then there were those smarmy CBS interviews. After all that parading around, no one wanted that partnership to work. And so, people went to work behind the scenes to finally pull the pin on the grenade. The doping scandal with Haleptosis was simply the last straw for the powers that be as they looked to tamp down on both PM & Halep's druggy antics. It's that unscrupulous, Old World mentality that leads to messiness like that. Serena got her revenge in the end.

too loud, but good tennis. will add to the cosystem of touramients. needs a better mix of the arts to get the crowd involved, not just pop maddening pop music. the comedy with the shots has potential, but what about poetry that describes the astonighing effort. and silence in reponse to brilliant tennis isthe best compliment. tennis is one of the few sports where the players don't do trash talk, let's keep it that way. funny jibes are fine.

Karmic balance was restored when the Brit beat the Brat for the Bolt in the final. Unlike Ruby, Draper didn't let Rune's strong start get him down. He blew the Danish Runes away in the 4th set. It wasn't even close. Draper finally got the Bonus Card to work on his last try of the entire tournament. There was so much card drama his tournament. Three easy fixes: 1) Let players use them simultaneously. None of this, but mom said I could go first nonsense. 2) Put the player's name & face on the screen so everyone knows & isn't confused. 3) Chill out with the music. It's too loud, incessant, & makes it hard for players, coaches, & umpires to communicate during crucial moments. The fans can't really hear what's being said. They need to let us in on the drama instead of masking it with an overbearing DJ.

such a bizarre tennis tournament but some great moments none-the-less. Did not expect Draper to win it all though, hopefully big things from him in 2024. P.S. respect also for the channel posting proper, 10-minute plus highlights for each match

Knew Draper would win. He had the best record from the jump followed by Ruby who cracked in the SF. Only lost two quarters the entire tournament. Rune raised his level to reach the final thinking he could have revenge on Drapery, but the Brit was having none of it. After the first quarter, he dug deep & ran way with the fourth.

The court is bouncy & slow which gives players more time & a better contact point to reach the ball. One serve means if you always go big, you're screwed if you fault. I like the format (excessive music notwithstanding). UTS cus A LOT of fat off matches by eliminating 2nd serves, deuce battles, & having shorter sets. It's nice to get in & see a match finish in one hour. Some of us don't have all day to watch players stall their way through a match or comeback after taking a 30 minute mental break. Play to win & get it done. You can see how the older players under pressure reverted to those bad stalling habits (Monfils, Paire, & Ruby). Change is good.

Nice to see Holger tapping into the crowd hatred thing that Novak taps into: if you love the mutual hate between the crowd and you, that's a "virtuous" circle that can be tapped into at the drop of a hat!

i hate indoor stadiums, they lack character as they all look the same. The court surface are nearly always the same and the background is just black. its good for noise. the outdoor one that had Feli Lopez was fantastic

It's an alternative tour to the ATP & Slams. The format is designed to trim the fat from overly long tennis matches by focusing on high intensity play from the jump & it removes the rule-bound stodginess by allowing for a freer environment for both players & fans. The music, however, is overbearing & is causing too many communication issues.

An exhibition tournament, i.e. not actual tour play that will score you ATP points. But still a competitive setting. You're still playing for a nice chunk of prize money and putting on a show for the crowds, just like in the case of actual tour play. Draper nearly doubled his prize money for the injury riddled year by going undefeated here: _"Draper collected $737,907 in prize money over the course of an injury-affected 2023 season, but he managed to boost that total impressively by earning himself a huge Christmas bonus by winning the UTS Grand Final._ _As an undefeated champion over the Grand Final weekend, Draper collected money from the bonus pool and walked away with an impressive $546,800 for winning his five quick-fire matches that were played over four eight-minute quarters."_

Because you want to win, but the margins are small & you keep messing up, & now the match is slipping away, & you can't hear your coach or get the attention of the umpire because there's so much loud annoying music playing, & you can't think clearly because your ego say you shouldn't lose, but the scoreline tells a different story. Felt bad for Ruby, but not for Rune who had it coming.

Great job Draper. Man Rune is a great player but he is so unlikebale. Even at an exhibiton he breaks a racquet, waives his arms to distract the opponent tries every move to cheat just to win. The only thing missing here was an MTO which I guess you are not allowed to take at this event

UTS is overproduced, for sure. It has some corny elements that scream middle-aged man (PM) trying to be hip & cool & the non-stop music is a ridiculous idea born out of a Eurotrash coke high. They need to pull back & stop being so tryhard.

Jack seems like a very nice guy! And I admire his stickability. But that playing style - ughh! Every shot (especially his forehand) is played with different technique and b) looks like an injury waiting to happen. And, also, grinding the f*ck out of every single point is not a recipe for longevity in the sport. His coaches need to tell him that the modern game involves hitting lots of winners for physical economy and injury prevention - expending lots of calories and grinding to death will make it hard for him to have a long career. In decades of watching tennis, I've never seen any player expend so much energy for the same effect as Jack does.

Is it once again something you think, which in reality originates from you being particularly sensitive? How do you explain that your message is not also "awkward" and, for example, pitiful? He is no more disrespectful than anyone else about the concept and the tournament. Honestly, it's only you who gets offended repeatedly and hurt by the players honesty and telling of how bad they think the concept is, which again explains why the event is neither big, prestigious nor important to anyone 😉

Rune was a bratty mess from the jump. He was never going to win. He likes to have time for his forehand & likes to take risks with his serve. Neither the format nor his opponent gave him that. Drapery beat Rune twice & performed the best of any player in the tournament. The fast & furious style favors players who can hit heavy, powerful returns while still possessing a strong serve & good movement. Draper did it the best as did Hamad at Next Gen Finals. This is the new way of tennis.
