Poster putty is also great for dry fitting miniatures to work on the pose or to see where/how components fit if you plan on painting your model or miniature is sub-assemblies. You can use a small amount of poster tack to temporarily stick pieces onto the main portion of the miniature/model, and as mentioned, tweak the pose or what have you. This is also great for kits with multiple component options so you can see which one you like, whether its alternate heads, arms, wings, etc before applying your glue.

It was very helpful for me in knowing how to align parts for poses. If a figure is holding a sword that will be resting on the ground, for instance.

Two optional uses of Poster Putty: My art desk is a drafting table with a slant. I use the putty to keep brushes from rolling away. Either a dot on the stick of brush, or speedbumps on the table surface. Second use is building elaborate "drying rigs" When i do washes, i want gravity to help the wash to settle while it's drying. I put a glob in shallow bowl or paper plate, add the mini upside down or whatever angle is needed for gravity assist, and let it dry that way.

I have recently taken up Flames of War and have found that my painting queue is long and it is impossible for me to get my starting forces all painted and in time for matches. Instead of fielding empty stands, I use the putty to hold figures to the bases so I can play with the soldiers in position (even though unpainted); it allows me to game immediately, and then week by week, to take some of the platoons off and paint them as I go. I also use the putty to hold bases to empty cookie tin boxes so I can transport them without damaging them - it saves me from investing money on the fancier foam travel cases. I've never had a figure damaged in transport since I started using the putty to hold them down (and it doesn't peel any paint off the bottoms of the completed figures). I just found your channel - really enjoying it so far - please keep them coming! :)

I sometimes use it for the Xwing game. Sometimes the posts that the ships are on are loose and the base keeps falling off when I move the ship. I just put a tiny dab of putty on the end of the post and it sticks just fine. Same with Wings of Glory. I have also put a dab on the bottom of asteroids to keep them from getting bumped during he game. It can be used on Sails of Glory ships also to keep the ships from spinning on the bases.

It's awesome for patching, too. I recently got a poorly molded EB Dire Troll that had a sizable space in his back where the two body halves didn't quite meet up. I took some trusty poster putty (I've always called it sticky tack) and packed that stuff in there, then textured it a bit, put a thin layer of super glue over it, and now I have a ballin' scar texture on my model. Never thought to use this stuff until I found your channel. Thanks Atom!

It's a great tool. I often use it for dry fitting models. Sometimes I'll use it to position one arm while I glue the other, ensuring the hand/gun join will line up in the pose i'm after. I also tend to stick 5 men at a time to a strip of cardboard so I can quickly undercost/basecoat my colours in with an airbrush. It's also super handy for painting lots of really small items together. I'll often have grenades or backpacks stuck around the top of a GW paint pot so I can paint them before attaching them to the model later.

Blu-tac/poster putty/sticky fix/etc., is also good at filling the gaps in the old slot-bases for Warhammer miniatures. I managed to get a free/loose 35mm base after one of my Tomb Banshees came without a round-base, but it was a slotted one. So I just tore off from putty, wedged it into the gap, and then carefully trimmed/peeled away the excess until I had a snug block of putty in the slot.

Holding down the sprues of a small model piece (like a license plate), to free up your hands for detailing. However, I watch your vids for acrylic painting tips. Because some of my anime themed models, come with character miniatures; and thats why i found you. But now that i have learned from you, i'll be using it for my miniature characters/pilots and such, that come with my scale models. Just a tip/use, for putty; to share with others. Cheers.

Poster putty is great to have around if your playing a game & something goes wrong with your model. Your arm just came off, or you forgot to magnetize a gun that you want to change out.... Also, on my Eldar Falcon I've had sticky tack holding the two main pieces of the hull together for years as I've never finished painting it. White putty with white primer blends great. I've always heard it called sticky tack up here in Manitoba, Canada.

I use it to hold minis to my painting handle thingy as well, though I've never used it as masking... clever. However, I do sometimes use it to test pose minis before I glue them together and I also use it to hold metal minis together after I glue them, so I can set it down while it dries and not have to sit there and hold it the whole time. This can be veeery tricky because if you get the sticky tack in the glue, then you get a big blob of tack glued to you model that you have to carve off. To avoid this, I just stick the tack somewhere else on the mini, for instance, for my spearmen whose spears and arms are a single piece that attach to the body at the shoulders, I stick the tack to the spear shaft and their thighs, to keep the tack away from any possible excess glue. It's tricky, but it saves me from cramped fingers. I might be easier to use a super glue accelerant spray, but that's one more thing to have to have and buy, and I already have lots of sticky tack.

You can add poster putty when mixing up green stuff to make the green stuff go a little further. Use a third of each (poster putty+yellow+blue). It won't dry quite as stiff as a normal mix of green stuff, but it's great for basic use, like filling in large gaps or creating the basic shape of a model.

Until now the use I’ve found for poster putty was to pre-assemble miniatures: for example I’ve been assembling some tau battlesuits and I wanted to give them a really nice pose but I was scared of screwing it up; so what I did was putting little balls of putty in the joint areas of legs, feet and arms of the battlesuits to make them stand in pose without having to glue them so I could figure out if the pose was just the way I liked it and if it would have looked strange or not once put together

I often use Poster Puddy (Where I am it's called Blue Tac or Glue Tac) for what you mentioned first off and also, well, testing poses, when you glue a model together your basically saying "This guy will always be in this pose" and that pose might be, really bad and ugly, so what I do is I see what works by putting Blue Tac on the limbs and such after gluing the head to the torso and the torso to the legs and just seeing what looks good. I also often find that when gluing, say, a pointing hand to your Space Marine, often the glue can take a while to dry and holding it on by hand while it does so is kind of difficult, so just put some Blue Tac to the side, put the hand on, put glue on the other side, wait for that to dry, remove the Tac and put a tiny bit of glue on the side you took the Tac off, I think the joint after this is a bit weaker than it is otherwise but it's easier and it shouldn't be an issue if you dont drop your mini's.

I know this video is old, but I used poster putty on some deathwatch shoulder pads for my kill team so I didn’t need a bunch of the same shoulder pads if I wanted to change what weapons were magnetised to the character. So my Black Templar Watch Sergeant with Stormshield and Xenophase blade has a single Black Templar shoulder pad and a single Deathwatch shoulder pad attached to their arms with poster putty, but if I wanted to give him a combimelta and a power maul, I just twist off the shoulder pads and attach them to the new arms. Good for pretty much any magnetisation job on an army with special space marine shoulder pads, and cheaper than casting more shoulder pads and way cheaper than buying more upgrade sprues

A lot of my Tau with jet packs/drones never really sat nicely on their bases with those clear stalks that come with them. A bit of blue tac in the hole on the base and BAM! stuck tighter than a tin can on a stick!

This might sound a little weird, but when I get a kit where you can make a model in multiple ways, instead of magnetizing, I use blu tac. I stick tiny pieces on to make it stick. Most of the time it is unnoticeable, and my models aren't display pieces anyway so. Great Video!

Tabletop Minions Thanks! I just wondered, could you do a video on conversions? I'm thinking of trying something, I'm not sure what. Mainly age of sigmar stuff. It's because I want the chaos sorcerer, but I don't like his head. Not sure what head to use. any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I've used poster putty to attach WYSIWYG bits to models that I haven't magnetized (either because it's a unit that I built before I started magnetizing or units that aren't worth mag'ing; like testing out adrenal glands on a brood of termagants)

you can keep it on you to attach that one guys arm back on that keeps falling off during games so he still looks okay for the game, before taking him home to repair him at a later time.

Sticky Tack is boss. I use it all the time, but the biggest use is on my knights. I modify where any arm can fit any weapon and then, I tack them on before I play.

I actually use the stuff on the table for certain models and weapons options where it will not be seen or only a small amount is needed. example chaos terminators tiny bit on the spikey bits boom regular marine terminator becomes an agent of chaos. demon Prince is foot slogging it this round don't blue tac on the wings. not running hurricane bolters on a storm Raven? take em off because they are blue tacked on. as long as the paint was dry it doesn't peel off the model paint in my experience even if it is stored with it there

I'm using it in basing. I get the base done. Get the model built. Then I poster putty them to the base to spray base coat so I can get them both sprayed at the same time without having to glue them together

We just call it prestick... Its funny how you mentioned you need to get this and it will help you to mount your models. In my country we use it a lot for normal everyday things, so it's basically found in 90% of households. Because of this, everyone starts by using this to mount models and it's referred to as the cheap painting handle... Never thought of using it to mask for camo or other spraying but that might be because I don't own a airbrush and predominantly use paint on primer. Not that I've done this before but I suppose the way you stopped the glueing area to be painted, you can mount the other section if you doing like a paint job that requires a pattern that must match so you can temporarily mount it, paint the bridging part and the finish the pieces separately

Great video. I always enjoy watching, and these pro tips are really cool. One tip you have talked about in the past is using baking soda as a basing material. I've tried it and I can't seem to get it right, it would be good to see you demo this for us. like you I'm not a fan of over course basing materials. keep the videos coming.

What seems to be going wrong? Are you using CA glue with it, or white PVA glue?
@davidbrian8253
@davidbrian8253 8 жыл бұрын
I'm using pva, and the baking soda works like an accelerator. And it turns into a globby mess and isn't adhering to the base.

I don't use PVA glue with the baking soda, I use CA (cyanoacrylate) glue, aka SuperGlue. It works really really well. Give it a try. Thanks for watching!

I know this is off topic, but there's a guy on youtube called "buypainted" who uses old latex gloves for masking off his models for when he airbrushes his weapons. Just poke the weapon through part of the glove and the elasticity holds the seal pretty well.

I like using poster putty but I've been using silly putty for my masking lately. Since silly putty has a slight greasy feel you can leave it on overnight and not have to worry about it taking off paint. I also had trouble with poster putty leaving sticky bits all over the model. Silly putty tends to work better for me.

I have used poster putty so long for holding models while painting it started to stink and fall apart. But was still sticky so i used it till the smell got to bad. I figure it was the paint and maybe sweat causing the smell.

If you have paint on an area that needs gluing just use super glue rather than plastic glue. I have some cheap super glue that is for some reason amazing. Dries quickly and rock solid!
