Joelle Casteix, the leading national “in the trenches” expert on the prevention and exposure of child sex abuse and cover-up, uses her own experiences to illustrate how to move past the trap of victimhood by taking responsibility.
Joelle Casteix is author of the upcoming book THE WELL-ARMORED CHILD: A PARENT'S GUIDE TO PREVENTING ABUSE. She is also the leading national “in the trenches” expert on the prevention and exposure of child sex abuse and cover-up. A successful writer and blogger, her other books include THE COMPASSIONATE RESPONSE: HOW TO HELP AND EMPOWER THE ADULT VICTIM OF CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE and YES, MY SON, WINE IS ONE OF THE FIVE FOOD GROUPS. Since 2003, Joelle has been the volunteer Western Regional Director of SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests. Joelle took the TEDxPasadenaWomen audience through her own experience as a survivor of child sexual abuse and how it has shaped the work she does now.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

I can feel the truth in that, I know it’s there. But at the moment I’m still not able to see the difference between responsibility and blame in that context. Especially if it’s about abuse. I understand that after such an event it’s the victims choice to either stay a victim or not. But in the moment the abuse was happening, how was I as a child supposed to take responsibility for it?

I'm here because I'm not happy with my current situation; wanting to change it I was examining what brought me to the situation. This line of thought brought me to writing down the question " Why do I NEED someone else to help me be more responsible?". Thank you for posting this.

1:18 It's not the moment that define us, but our choices and our reactions that make us who we are. When you think you're a victim, you're self-destructive. 7:06 Don't just live. But thrive! ❌Blame (stop blaming yourself for your failure or the bad decisions you made even when the decisions were not our fault) ✔️Responsibility (make peace with the bad things that has ever happened to us). We can create our potential

There are many women/girls that are in such conditions, where due to the selfish nature of some men they lived a terrible life. And such things are even more in societies where they can't share their stories and get some help!

I appreciate the content - defining responsibility is so important, yet sometimes overlooked! Though I have just 45 subscribers now, I hope my latest video on raising my son to be responsible makes people reflect on defining responsibility as this video does. Thank you again for the perspectives.

On the surface... sure. This feels nice and prophetic and hits on some feels... But seriously, "Taking Responsibility will solve your problems!?" Just no. At best, you meant something along the lines of "baggage holds us back" and "coming to terms with circumstances and finding ways to ditch the baggage and move forward" are what we strive to do when we accept and forgive ourselves... The message you are peddling couldn't be more sinister: it's the individuals fault and you shouldn't feel bad for them. LoOk, sOm3oNe dOwN oN tHeIr LuCk! WhAt aN iNcReDibLe OPPORTUNITY tHeY hAvE to TaKe On MORE RESPONSIBILITY(!?) Wild concept: maybe what people need is help accepting, finding peace, laying the baggage to rest, and moving on. Not saying "Yep. My bad. I chose poorly. I'm to blame. You can rest easy knowing I'm to blame. I take responsibility!?"
