Dr. Strauss presents the importance of human touch, emphasizing the importance of it at her Neontology department in the Hospital. When Dr. Strauss approaches frightened and excited mothers at the maternity ward she knows exactly what they need to hear, as a mother to 5 children herself.
Produced by Gilad Adin www.giladadin.com/
Dr. Tzipi Strauss serves as Chief of Neonatology, at Sheba Hospital, and lectures at Tel Aviv University’s faculty of medicine. She studied at the Technion, Holland, and Harvard. Dr. Strauss is a mother to five children. We wouldn’t bother noting this, unless we heard that this piece of information is going to have a crucial part in her talk that will leave us all in tears.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

My twins were 28 weeks and 2.5 pounds, and in the NICU for 10 weeks. Not only did I touch them frequently I was always smiling, laughing, and happy around them. I greeted them every day with ecstatic joy to see them. I sang to them, and talked to them endlessly. I also admonished all the medical staff to greet them with a smile and use cooing baby talk with them. Prior to that they approached the babies like a mechanic would a car with no emotions except looking for problems and trying to fix them. I felt this sent a negative vibe to the babies that they were 'problems' to be fixed versus being welcomed into the universe. I told them to use a sing song voice and reassure the babies that they were going to be just fine and will go home soon. I told them to talk to them like they would any patient and tell them what they were doing, what body part they were going to examine, what they were looking for and what the result was. When I had to leave them I wasn't sad rather I told them it was time for them to rest and grow and dream about the happy life we were going to have together. I left them with a reassuring kiss goodnight. When they reached milestones or passed tests I celebrated with them and let them know how I proud I was of them. When I wasn't with them I was thinking about them with loving thoughts of how cute they were and making plans for the future. After 10 weeks in the NICU they were 5 pounds and ready to come home. The doctor told me he had never ever seen twins do as well as they did! They did not have one complication! Not one brain bleed! Every milestone was was met with flying colors. The nurses said they sucked the bottle for the first time better than some term babies. They said usually one twin does better than the other but both of mine did equally well even though one of them was slightly smaller. They are 8 years old now and in perfect health, happy, and intelligent girls. I can't help but to think the positive approach contributed to their well being.

It's very important for women to be healthy BEFORE even getting pregnant, this is not addressed that I know of. Only "take prenatal vitamins DURING pregnancy", while a deficiency in the mother before she finds out she's pregnant will cause problems. Also, most prenatal supplements don't contain enough variety or amount per nutrient. Very FEW people are SUFficient in nutrients (NOT IN THE FOOD BECAUSE IT'S NOT IN THE SOIL!), everyone needs 90 nutrients every day in good amounts. Dr. Joel Wallach and Dr. Peter Glidden offer more info.
