There are always so many hurdles for me to jump working on this cabin - like so many things that need doing, days and hours of stuff towards the build, without setting foot on the cabin site itself. I am feeling the pressure to get this cabin closer to being closed in as the seasons are changing, and my life is increasingly busy aside from this cabin build. I am climbing the steep part of the mountain right now, so I've gotta just keep my head up and plug away.
This video is a perfect example of nearly an entire day spent working towards the rafter install (again), but not another rafter up. But, it is what it is, and I just plug away at whatever needs to be done at the time.
I had Lenny join me for the weekend, which was a great bonding experience for him and I. He is a very special guy. 💝
For those of you who hate me talking too much - this may not be the video for you. But for those of you who enjoy listening to a talking gerbil, then perhaps you'll enjoy this one 😊😉
As I move up on the structure, filming the work is getting harder, which is why I often find it easier to take a break and come down to explain what I'm doing/what I've done/what I'm going to do. Its maybe not ideal, but it is what safest for me working up high, and working alone in the middle of nowhere (there is no cell/internet on this land).
As I say in the video, this is day one of two days out there - It's easiest for me to manage the footage for editing and keeps the video length down if I separate the days. Plus, it de-clutters my brain and my SD card 😊.
As always, thanks so much for all your love and support, and lovely comments. I hope you are all doing well!
~ your favorite talking gerbil,
Michelle 💝

You could make a rafter template that you don't have to measure. Take a rafter length board and put it up from the ridge down to the top plate of the wall and secure it. Take two lengths of plywood about two feet long and the approximate width of the rafter and clamp one at the ridge and the other at the top plate and draw the bird's mouth cuts on the plywood. Take the plywood pieces down and cut out the bird's mouths. Take the plywood back up and screw them to the board where they fit. You can now take the template board back down and use the plywood cutouts to mark the rafters for cutting. if you find that the distance from the ridge beam to the top plate varies you can always put the template back up and move the bottom piece of plywood for each rafter where it will sit on the roof.

Hi Michelle, first of all, let me tell you you're my new hero, my source of inspiration ! I'm a French Canadian retired guy (medical tech) from Québec (excuse my English), I was searching for a site to make a table from a biscuit (horizontal cut near the base of the tree) or a slab (longitudinal cut) for my son Marc and his girl friend when I found your site ! I couldn't believe that such a small woman was able to do all those things, wood milling, chainsaw, operating BobCat and other machinery, the heavy lifting etc. and you're good at it ! One year at a cabin in Outaouais we were supposed to cut all the big pines and spruces near the cabin and rent a portable wood milling machine to make our own wood to enlarge the cabin, I was very happy to be able to at last mill some wood by myself ! At this time, I had already bought two bark chisels very similar to those you're using but, halas, plans changed and it finally didn't happened ! I work with wood since I was 3 years old in my father's shed When the weather is fine, I'm "playing" outside, almost every day, like you are and when it rains, like right now (it's pouring), I listen to one or two of your épisodes ! I've already seen almost all of them at least one time ! I also like the interaction you have with your animals and the evident complicity with Steve (I'm jealous) ! Keep on the good work and continue to follow your dreams and to make us dream at the same time !

Yeah, Lenny is still very shy and unsure, although SO much better than a month ago. Today we have to give him a heartworm injection and start prednisone, so his activities are strictly reduced now as we’re about to start killing the adult worms. This will be hard for him as he’s really coming out of his shell now, wanting to run and play a bit. But - we gotta do what we gotta do.

I don’t think he understood why I was going up and down that mountain, and back around again and again, but he loving followed me every step of the way. It’s just adorable to watch him grow - he’s like a puppy. It’s like he has never really lived and done normal dog things before. Running and jumping really seem new to him. He’s not acclimated to our weather yet, and shivers already sometimes outside, so being that he’s still a bit thin I’m gonna get him a jacket. I don’t normally dress my pets, but I really think Lenny needs it.

Something I have noticed about warpped lumber, it will straightedge itself out on it's own. See the sun dries out the top side, causing it to contract. If you turn it over, the other side will contract and make it straight again. Or you can get a spray bottle full of water and spray the top side of the lumber and it will straighten in a hour or so. Works on plywood as well. Warpping is all about uneven drying.

Hey Michelle, just a though on you saying that every lift of the sky mile requires a trip down to unhook….Working on the waterfront we use a pneumatic release system for some cargo. Cranston-Machinery makes release hooks that can be rigged for remote activation if you devised a platform to land the load on so the sling goes slack allowing a remote control release. You’d need a hook, small gas cylinder and remote actuator system. Could be worth checking out.

I did put a lot of effort into stacking that lumber nicely last fall, but I should have ratchet strapped the stuff. I was dreaming in technicolor when I thought I would get to the build like in April, so I never intended those boards to be left alone for so long. 😏

Kind of like the Wranglerstar youtube guy....he isn't always about building a ( whatever it is) in a chopped up speed video to the finish line, but moreover, spending time with us, hanging out so to speak....So thats cool, that your sharing your story and thoughts.

Well thanks! I know some people hate me chatting too much, so it’s always hard to find balance. I’m glad some people enjoy the hanging out experience. 😊

Shim shimany, shim shimany, shim shim sharoo, how lucky Lenny boy is to be spending some one on one time with you! :o) The little bit of research I did on bears in Canada, that I did after you mentioned food and bears, makes me think you should be packing a .44 or .357 magnum, when you are working on the cliff house, especially by yourself. Maybe I'm just a worry wart, or it's all that military training that makes me be prepared for just about anything, in most situations. Stay safe you all, and you are looking so good Lenny boy!

I put my cooler in my burning barrel, so that if the bear was going to go after it, I’d hear the barrel smashing around and have enough time to read the bear spray instructions and make my move. 😁
