She-Ra: Princess of Power is an American animated series produced in 1985 by Filmation. A spin-off of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe series, She-Ra: Princess of Power was aimed primarily at a young female audience to complement He-Man's popularity with young males.
At the time He-Man was still reaching a mostly male audience and Filmation and Mattel decided to target a whole new audience by creating She-Ra: Princess of Power.
Did it work? Depends on who you ask.

To be fair, She-Ra never uttered the words "I have the power!". She said "I am She-ra!"

She wasn't meant to. He-Man had the Sword of Power while She-Ra had the Sword of Protection. She-Ra was more about protection than power, which is why she had abilities that He-Man didn't have, like the ability to heal.

At a Fan convention Melendy Britt tells a story of a being contacted by a mother who's young daughter was apparently molested. The daughter said she would only tell her hero She-RA who hurt her, They had Melendy Britt talk to the little girl on a telephone in the voice of She-RA, and the little girl did tell her who did it. The Horde is the best! The _Masters of the Universe: Origins_ Horde figures have been amazing so far. Mosquitor is great, with the same blood sucking action as the original, Leech comes with swappable hands and head with suction cup versions, but Mantenna is _absolutely badass._ The figure actually has _four full legs_ with independent hip joints for each, unlike the original '80s version that just had two legs with a groove in each to make them kinda look like four skinny little legs. I can't wait for more Horde figures from the _Origins_ line... and I am _really seriously hoping_ that they make a Modulok _Origins_ figure! Owning lesser characters is a thing. In some cases it makes sense - Prime and Megatron were some of the bigger and more expensive Transformers. In other cases less so. Oddly enough, Queen Marlena (Adam & Adora's mother) also has a really interesting backstory, but it was only brought up a couple times. I see why they became such huge hits in their day: imaginative stories, with fun characters and a world kids wanted to be the hero or heroine in. I hope we get more He-Man and She-Ra in the future. Yeah, the hand-off confused me as a kid, too. My neighbor got the toys and we were super excited to combine our figures in play, but her figures were so much smaller and out of scale with mine. The cloth and doll hair was strange to me and meant you couldn't play in the sand, dirt, mud, water, etc like I did with my MOTU figures. And the mini comics were also super different... the MOTU stuff was comic styled with gritty and near mature storytelling... while POP was more storybook influenced with pastel colors and more childish stories.
@Belgand
@Belgand Жыл бұрын
Really? Even as a kid I'd never even think to take my figures out into sand or mud. It would not only get them all dirty but it would gunk up the joints and such. The only toys that went outside were specifically designed for it, let alone in the sandbox. That was reserved for sand-specific toys and the occasional Tonka truck, because that was back when they were made of steel, practically indestructible, and they had some explicit sand/dirt moving play features.

I think the decline in MOTU had less to do with She-Ra and more to do with ThunderCats. Both TCats and She-Ra made their cartoon debut in the fall of 1985 and TCats was arguably the breakout hit of that season. It really did not help that ThunderCats was a similar magic/sci-fi hybrid like MOTU down to the male lead (Lion-O) possessing a magic sword. As far as the toys I pretty much only had the MOTU figures as a child. But the She-Ra cartoon was awesome and IMO not a huge problem for boys to get into. Adora/She-Ra was a great heroine to follow and Filmation’s background art was always a delight from the colorful Whispering Woods to the mechanized and dark Fright Zone. I also enjoyed many of the supporting characters, particularly Madame Razz and Broom.

When I was little, there so many different cool shows and toys that we would always pretend we were a Ninja Turtle, or a Transformer, or He-Man or a Joe... It was so much fun making up our own adventures on the playground or at recess and we came up with some pretty cool ideas that the shows never did. Memories are great lol

The Horde villains were awesome, and they went along great with He-Man's rogues gallery. I was young enough and enough of a mega-fan that I ended up with She-Re and Bo, as well. I didn't think about them being "girl's" toys until a little while later (my older brother probably brought me to that realization).

I loved She-Ra as a kid, and do even more now. The original show was more interesting than He-Man in a lot of ways, and the reboot is one of my favorite shows of the last ten years. And not for nothing, but I got to meet She-Ra, He-Man, and King Hiss once. :P

Born in Sweden in 1984, I was only vaguely aware of He-Man in the early 90's (as other kids my age watched it), and as far as I know we didn't even get a release of She-Ra. That said, I loved She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, which really went far above and beyond what anyone could reasonably expect from a reboot of an 80's toy commercial, and I find the history behind the crafting of those old shows to be absolutely fascinating. Both of the new He-Man shows have been solid, too.

I wouldn't necessarily say that She-Ra was what killed He-Man. There's a sizeable article on what exactly happened on a site called flyingmoose. But the situation can't be summed up in one sentence. It was multiple factors that did the MOTU franchise in. Part of it was its own success, like you said. It became a TV series, a toy line, a comic series and even had its name on lunchboxes. But other shows like Transformers and G.I. Joe came in and did the same thing, siphoning sales away from the MOTU line. Basically they saw what the MOTU line did and thought that idea was just DANDY, and did it themselves. Eventually, L'Oreal bought Filmation and hastily shuttered the company, terminating the entire staff (I believe a day or two before legislation would pass requiring companies to give 60 days' notice before a mass termination). One of the animators mentioned they pretty much just walked in and said, 'Put down your pencils and get out'. And that was the end of it.

From what I understand the He-Man reboot in the 2000's had planned to introduce She-Ra and the Evil Horde in season 3, but sadly was canceled. And for Princesses of Power, I don't think they had the rights to use He-Man or any MotU characters, I think they just had She-Ra. Which bummed me out, would have been cool to see the twins team up again.

That's because, even though Adora's canon origin was alluded to & both Eternia and Grayskull could be mentioned (although the latter two had to be given different uses), Sony Pictures has rights to Prince Adam/He-Man, Cringer/Battle Cat, Duncan/Man-at-Arms, Orko, Teela, The Sorceress, Keldor/Skeletor, Beast Man, Evil Lyn, Snake Man, King Hiss, General Rattalor, Stratos, Ram-Man (now gender bent to Ram-Mam in some cases), etc. whereas Dreamworks got the rights to Adora/She-Ra, the members of the Great Rebellion & the not-so Evil Horde.

She-Ra was not conceived as a twin sister of Teela. Princess of Power was originally intended to be a Masters of the Universe spin-off starring Teela. The Girls Toys division at Mattel thought it would be problematic if the star of the spin-off was the non-powered girlfriend of He-Man, so they conceived of She-Ra as a long-lost twin sister, so they would be equals.

I never watched the original She-Ra, but I respect what it started. Without it, we wouldn't have had writers getting the courage to do Xena or so many others. Oh yeah, Xena. I was just thnking, I would want a real curve ball over any horrific premonition I could imagine on hearing "live-action she-ra". But thinking Xena it could work. Think like if Julie Taymor directed, and they really went to the roots and used John Blackstar as the basis instead of He-Man. Make it like a mix of Terry gilliam's Brazil for comedy and grody tension form Alien, where the remnants of humanity take off from flooding South America and find a fantasy planet elsewhere.

Great look back at one of my favorite franchises! My exposure to He-man and She-Ra were the cartoons, I never read the comics nor could I afford the toys. As such my interest in MOTU waned when the stories started getting nerfed (eg "Skeletors, Skeletors, Everywhere"), plus I was getting older. I did enjoy She-Ra, though not to the extent that I enjoyed He-man originally. As a boy I related more to him (minus the muscles 😂), though I still enjoyed She-Ra for the entertainment value and always got hyped when there was a He-Man crossover! And yeah I didn't understand why the toys in the stores looked nothing like the cartoons, and I feel if they were made to match the designs of the MOTU toys they would have worked with boys. The Horde toys were cool though. The She-Ra toys were too girly for my taste, and should have looked more like the ones Super 7 released.

Something that always baffles me about MotU is the stories I hear on how integral the cartoon was to the success of the toys in the US. In Germany the cartoon played almost no part in the toyline's popularity. It didn't even properly air until the line was discontinued. There were only a few select episodes on VHS. Amazing that it was so popular that it spawned PoP.
