I think this is probably 1 of the few episodes of the show that's relatively easy to follow

An anvil is a big heavy block, usually steel or iron, that a blacksmith hammers metal on to shape it. So when No. 2 says you must be hammer or anvil, he's saying that either you're the one doing the hammering, or you're the one being hammered. In this episode, No. 2 starts off as the hammer, and ends up as the anvil. 🙂

A really enjoyable episode, this one. The various No 2s throughout the series represent different aspects of a blank-faced authority in the Village but here this particular No 2 makes the fatal mistake of briefly showing a human (if not humane) weakness in that authority which No 6 exploits ruthlessly. No 2 is doomed from that tiny, subtle moment in which he allows No 6 to witness his fear of the unseen 'No 1', and it couldn't happen to a nicer guy!

One of the cool things about this episode is that it shows continuity back to “Checkmate”, because here Number Six has already identified the music store proprietor and the waiter as guardians who will report to Number 2.

Excellent reactions from Marie-Clare, to this superb episode of The Prisoner. And what an awesome performance from great actor Patrick Cargill as No. 2. If you want to see more of Patrick Cargill, might I recommend the excellent British sitcom Father Dear Father.

Anvils are what's used to forge metal, by beating the metal with a large, metal, hammer to shape it. "You have to be hammer or anvil" in this context is "You have to be the person beating someone down, or the person being beaten down" This is one of my favourites, in part because of how much it flips the usual script by making 6 in control throughout the episode, and chose to do so because of how far this 2 went with another prisoner.

I love this episode. One of my favourites. Seeing number 6 outwit number 2 is very satisfying. Great reaction.

No. 2 doesn't think No. 6 is winding him up because No. 2 is already utterly paranoid, as demonstrated by his calls for greater vigilance and security. It is in his nature to suspect plots and conspiracies.

This is one of the episodes showing Number Six has learnt from his time in the village and applied their methods against one of their own.

The No 2 `Patrick Cargill` is probably best known for his role in Comedy sit-com `Father Dear Father` circa 1968- 1972 (I think?) but he could do drama very well too. Another example is his role in the 1967 `Avengers` Episode `The Fear Merchants`. His No 2 was `gullible` due to his chronic insecurity and paranoia! Something that No 6 deduced when `interrogated` at No 2s quarters early in the episode. Many `Prisoner` fans regard this episode very highly.

Some time back I came across a behind-the-scenes detail that takes the performance by Patrick Cargill (this episode's Number Two) up to another level. Apparently he recorded his scenes more or less in reverse order, so he had to start by playing Number Two as the broken man he is at the end of the story, and gradually scale back the paranoia and instability with each successive scene filmed.

Yes-he gave that interview to the `Six of One` society; in the early 1980s? - I think.

D6 and XO4 was something 6 made up, pretending he was really D6 sent by a mysterious superior XO4 to spy on 2. I always think of an anvil as something a blacksmith uses to make horses shoes. The White hot metal to be made into the shoe is placed on a metal block, the anvil, and hammered into shape with a hammer. Here 2 wants to be the hammer smashing 6 the anvil, but 6 ends up hammering him. Below a link to vid of a blacksmith and his anvil. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hqpjedh6prmqdps.htmlsi=-lnRxvEL2IpqLElr
