Inexplicable to many, his death touched millions who knew him as an inspiring television presence. Now, a new documentary, "Roadrunner," explores the complexity of the man who seemed to have the world as his oyster. Correspondent Jim Axelrod talks with filmmaker Morgan Neville, and with colleagues who discuss the extraordinary trajectory of Bourdain's life.

I cried like a baby when I heard the news of his passing...Anthony Bourdain was a friend in my head. I wish I had a chance to thank him for taking me along vicariously on his amazing travels. They were master classes on culture, food, and history. Continue to rest in peace.

I am so sorry for your loss. He was an untreated addict. They’re a victim of their own impulsivity. As a survivor of a suicide, I’ve come to the realization that the act itself. I hope this helps you

I met him right on the streets of Chelsea here in NYC. I nodded hello and said” I Love your show, man” He smiled and reached out to shake my hand replying “ Hey! thank you, thank you so much for your support” nicest guy, super tan, cowboy boots and Ray Bans. RIP my friend.

I don't think he realized what a joyful effect he had on people. He was so tough on himself. He was a beautiful man. Will love and miss him forever.

I miss him... He was my company in my home at times I felt alone. His voice was so tranquil.... He should have been the ambassador for the world...

Agreed. I sometimes feel like his death & what he gave us are actually connected--that he loved the world so much, and also saw and felt so much pain in the world that he couldn't carry it anymore. Who knows. But I agree with you.

Agreed! Kitchen Confidential is very informative, funny and kind of sad all the same time. Kind of like Anthony himself. I own all of his books and loved watching his show. 💕

As if his tragic death could ever outweigh the impact he’s had on us. He was flawed and I didn’t always like him, but that was part of his humanity. People who set out to be liked put the cart before the horse. Anthony valued authenticity and eccentricity, because that’s what he was. Mad love and respect for Anthony always.

Same and I still can not watch any of the shows again. I am selfishly mad at him. When I was depressed I went to those shows for comfort. I wish he would have had something to go to for comfort also.

He was always in motion. Lesson: You can only run for so long. Eventually the pain of existing does catch up. And when there is nowhere in the world to hide, wish for a peace that transcends the emptiness. Search for it.

@@narata1541 this is literally the opposite of his life and goals. He wanted to show that people, at the hearth are all loving to each other. No politics, no religion. At the heart of human life is sharing food and caring for each other. If we get to know strangers and commune over a meal together we can change the world.

His suicide does not diminish his gifts to us just makes me wish I could have helped him in return. More love seems to be the consensus. The last time I saw Robin Williams he was in his black Mercedes jeep after bicycling on the sf Marina beautiful area. I,a nobody waved. A lifetime of personal thank you's in that wave, but clearly not enough. Banning guns will not stop suicides, I see them jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge and out of downtown highrise office buildings, quite often. Therapy was a waste of $1000s for me but changing jobs helped. And a new Lover ... chapter to chapter. So it goes.

@@mrcal48boy Yep. I always loved Tony and his take on things. I lost a friend to suicide in the barracks room next to mine in Okinawa awhile back and Bourdain's suicide hit me close to home.

I was gonna say the same thing. It actually makes me kinda mad that people do this all the time. Someone passes away and then theres an outpouring. It should be the other way around, we should acknowledge and show how much people mean to us while they are living.

Whenever I see reruns of his shows, I like to pretend he is not really gone, or I just say to myself that he was "enjoying" himself in this scene, and that he still had a while to live, although just a year, or maybe two, after this episode. It's comforting, and still allows me to watch him without too much heartache..

I am the same. I was binging his latest shows 4 hours in when my phone went off and it was a friend saying Anthony Bourdain .. I was like NO WAY I am watching him now. No no no. I have not watched anything since. I feel selfish I was mad at him. =(

Do you miss Jesus that way too? I mean you never knew or met him either Lol. I often feel strange and think Tony would probably roll his eyes to such trivial worship and idolization. Just be you.. that’s what Tony would have wanted. He was a cool dude, and I only met him once, but I could tell he loathed fame and adulation.

i can absolutely relate to that. and one can only fight for so long. after a while the mind and body both goes numb. you are spent, exhausted and want every breath to be your last. you dont want the morning to happen becs you dont want to deal with another day. you wish you never wake up. and when that dosent happen you find a way to end it.

I always enjoyed how genuinely appreciative he could be towards receiving food from people around the world. He wasn't an uppity snob about other people's cooking like so many chefs. It always made me feel good watching his show. It is rare to find a show that can make you feel that way.

It really caught me off guard just how depressed I was when I heard he died. It’s so strange, I’ve never met him but I loved his shows and books and get so excited every time he introduces a new project. I feel like he really offered all he could to us. His advocacy and outreach changed peoples lives along the way of course but I don’t think he ever really understood that he impacted peoples’ lives who just simply watched the show at home too. Such a loss and such a genuinely kind man. I hope his family is able to find closure through things like this. Especially his daughter. I’m sure later in life she’ll be grateful that before he died she was at an age where she could have real meaningful moments with her dad that she will remember forever.

I looked up to Anthony Bourdain, he was so much more than a culinary extraordinaire ... He was an introverted existential intellectual marvel ... He was a inspiring Philosopher ! He is one of those people that is Very hard to encapsulate / characterize in a brief comment !

Yes. It is difficult to understand in others and sometimes in. ourselves. Everyone looks for a cause or causes in others and so usually finds one that satisfies them but may well not be the real cause at all. The mind remains a mystery.

I don't think suicide has very much to do w depression at all. It's more about trauma. Something happened long ago, perhaps he was molested or raped (or something else horrible) and buried it like most ppl do; esp men. That causes the soul to want to die.

@@divagirllove3977 What you say is true for some people. Trauma can be from many things and trauma can be subjective. I've known people that were in danger of something frequently and yet, did not notice, that was their personality. There are people who notice everything about others and themselves and it overwhelms them over and over throughout their lives. You don't need to be sexually abused or be in the military to experience trauma. That is a relatively recent mainstream accepted myth. Even very subtle behaviors of a parent can send terrible messages into the mind of a kid or teen. The parent is oblivious to their destructive behavior. A child and a teen might develop a very negative feeling and not know where it came from.

The look on his face when Iggy Pop tells him that it's about love--I got the sense that he was surprised and sad, like that's not an answer that helps him. I don't think he could feel loved.

The No Reservations Quebec was really how I will remember him. I wanted to go to Quebec in the dead of winter to experience what he did. I was sitting as my former self in a Hawaiian Shirt in San Francisco, CA announcing to the world I would go there right now. Someone responded do you realize how cold it is? I said I would dress warm. He showed me on this show the best way to fall in love with food. RIP Tony. RIP.

I literally still can hardly watch anything about him. Isn't it funny how these things effect a person. Like, I never knew him personally and yet his death really hit me hard. He was so amazing and once, long ago I had dreams of becoming a chef so he was sort of a hero of mine. There have been a few celebrity deaths that have moved me. Steve Irwin. Princess Diana. Robin Williams. And Anthony Bourdain. 💔

Anyone who’s a real toiler knows Tony’s darkness because they identify with it. That’s part of what made him so special. The fact that all these people say they couldn’t see it... that’s what really makes me sad.

@@johntechwriter Exactly. Even in the 70's and 80's no one became a heroin addict by mistake. He had self hate and demons, chemical imbalances that drove him to self destruction. As a 54 year old, I can tell you that chasing those highs never ends once you hit sobriety. He lived long and soaked up love from across the globe, but when you can't go on then check out. What's the point after that long? Sit on your accolades? Hope you can visit one more street vendor that's new? Wait for biological breakdowns that impair your movement and freedoms? He had a life long drive towards self harm and managed to overcome it for decades, so mad props to him.

Steve Greska : In a way I understand what you say...but I wonder about taking one's life, is there a 'penalty' in the afterlife because a person did not 'do their time'....but on the other hand, it is said that when you die, if it is not 'your time' you are told so, and the soul returns to the body. Chances are he must have been in such emotional pain that he was not sent back. One very powerful word - love!

@@jillsinanan6777 I consider the reason for being/life is to give comfort to our fellow travelers. The only real currency that matters is memories and experiences. I do not believe there is some celestial hockey goalie saying, " you got that shot in early now must pay". Do you honestly think your life thread (in all the universe) is worth a penalty call of 2 minutes in the box, and the attention that comes with it?

Steve Greska : A hockey game...seriously?! Why is that suicide is not a good thing according to some religion and even in some countries who used Christianity as the foundation for their laws. That being said, if your purpose in life was not completed, then you have not accomplished your soul's mission...one's soul is here for an experience(s), the body just lives and dies, but the soul is held accountable. Just saying that suicide might be deemed to be cheating, and for that, it meant soul will need to return in another body to gain the experience it copt out from....yes talking reincarnation. Whether you believe in that is your business really, I am not trying to convert you!!

I was devastated when he passed away and I continue to miss him terribly. He was a master of storytelling and I learned SO much from him. His voice will live on and it brings me so much happiness whenever I come across it today. What he gave was a gift and I mourn for what he could have given us in the future.

I never meet Anthony personally but I miss him. He made understand that traveling opens your eyes to other cultures. And understand that we all have the same dreams and goals in life. Thank you Tony

I remember waking up to the news he had taken his life. I was numb and stunned as I dressed for work. I worked unable to think about anything or anyone else but him. Once, I began driving home, the emotions came pouring out of me. I wept all the way home for him. This man changed my life. I will never forget Tony Bourdain.

I loved this guy. He transcended all that it takes to be a human on planet earth. Genuine, real, without avarice, inspiring, a nomadic prophet. I learned so much about love, relationships towards others, and the simplicity it takes to make the world our neighborhood. Endless love from Guyana.

He brought the world to our tv screens. He never ignored the reality of the places he traveled to, no matter how cruel. But he always showed the beauty of humanity, even in the places where beauty has been savaged by conflict. Rest In Peace Anthony Bourdain.

He said that restaurant kitchens were many times, the last hold out for the misfits of the world, people on the fringe. He lived a good chunk of his life in the spotlight, but always left part of himself just over the edge, on the fringe, in the shadows, stuck in that restaurant kitchen where you could truly be yourself--go as dark as it can and find solace in others whom were just as deep as him.

I never heard of him until I saw this new docu and now, in a very bourdainian way, I’m addicted to all the episodes of everything he ever did. He seems the happiest when he’s eating a home cooked meal at a table with a family.

I know he struggled with depression, but I firmly believe Asia Argento was the straw that broke the camel's back. Those photos of her with another man came out just five days before his suicide.

I am one of those millions of viewers that never knew him but was heartbroken when I heard of his death. I believe I watched every episode, as well as his other works, and I felt his presence deeply in his travels and stories. I'm so sorry he left us and wish there had been some way for him to alter his course the second of his passing. I still hurt.

Interesting to see the exchange between Anthony and Iggy. I remember reading the back of one of Iggy's CDs, where he was asking listeners to email him. He promised to reply, and I kinda also remember something written along the lines of wanting friends. I was touched by that. Musician, chef, astronaut, or stay at home parent, Iggy really nailed it when he said he wanted love. It is such an important part of life.

Dont let one you tube video write your whole opinion about anyone. Don’t be confused, he never chased materialism. “Parts Unknown”, was very much about folk cuisine, even when highlighting one exclusive dish, he’d point out it roots that were appropriated. That’s why he’d go eat fish cut cooked on a river bank. Or pork in a one roomed stucco shack in the desert. And did so without condescension, and with grace. He never became a chef to become rich or famous, that just was not a thing. The world class chefs in New York weren’t even middle class, it was Shep Gordon that encouraged bourdain to publish writing and promote, another profession not known for glitz. Bourdains key to celebrity was his personable wit on the book tour, which lent itself to television. Glamour hound, he was not. Here’s a proverb for you, don’t judge a book by its cover.

I met Tony 1 month before his passing at an event in Santa Barbara where he spoke and signed books. I was the DJ and he was thrilled to hear his favorite music and wrote a nice compliment and gave his autograph ✍️ 👨🍳

Amazing how much his brother's voice sounds like Tony...just so sad behind the scenes something was going on and he didn't speak to anyone...it seems he chose to push people away. I feel for his family and most of all his daughter...who no longer has a daddy.

Amazing film. He moved so many people. I'd come home from school and put the tv on and it was set to Travel so I could hear him in the background. To have him in all our lives was a gift. Just wish the film was longer. I miss him even if I never met him.

I was not aware of his work until after he took his life. But after he did, I took it upon myself to learn about him. I watched ALL of Parts Unknown and was immediately smitten with Bourdain and his work. He was not about food. He was about people and culture. Food was merely the vehicle that he used to teach us about life. RIP Tony.

I cried the moment I heard he died, never had met him yet I felt like he was a close friend I never felt that about anyone one I see on TV he came across the screen like I could touch and feel every where he was honestly it was a experience and to know I am not the only one who felt that means there was something to him he was so genuine, it's sad he couldn't see how he touched people all over the world truly amazing it's sad but also beautiful to know he made you feel something. I can’t help but want to agree…but when you look back at it he was so sad. At the time It felt like it was just apart of the show when but in truth it was his reality. I hope he is in a better place now. He is missed deeply.
