The exact tension is only important for an external stringer. If you string your own rackets you'll find your own relative tension that works for you, so accuracy isn't so important, just consistency is important
@miguelbarahona6636
@miguelbarahona6636 4 жыл бұрын
And remember, consistency is not only in the tension mechanism, consistency depends also on clamps and while making knots. I own a cheap drop weight machine and the consistency I get from it is awesome! And for an external stringer, you probably need only one string job to get the ideal relative tension for anyone.

I've had a Prostringer for years and it's an Excellent machine as regards to portability and it's price reflects its ease of portability. If you're stringing just for yourself then you won't have any problems. Just find the tension that you're happy with and you're good to go. (If you're not an advanced stringer or a Tennis nerd, stop reading further). .... BUT, Don't expect to get same DT if you have it strung on another machine. If you want consistency of DT from machine to machine and therefore accuracy in Reference Tension, then just CALIBRATE your Prostringer in order to measure the machine's ACTUAL Tension Scale. ie Don't expect the linear tension scale shown on the machine to actually be linear.

He didn't get a close to reference tension due to: 1) should get a starting clamp from Harry & use it to start the main 2) at 10:14-10:22 tension at throat, clamp at head!! due to his mistake of placing the other ProStringer clamp facing the wrong end

When I see young men like him being enthusiastic and innovative about their tennis, my coach-heart pounds. The ITF and the WTA/ATP really should consider offering players like Chris a free string-service at tournaments. Funding those guys a bit to make tour life easier for them yields to an increased density of high-class players. Imagine poor Chris fiddling and fumbling with 2 or 3 rackets after a tough match in 90 degrees heat. Bloody hell, come ooOOOOONNNN....

@ukslippy
@ukslippy 4 жыл бұрын
@@elg0rdo351 I can agree about having less money at the top. I'd even go so far as multiple GS winners should forego prize money and its distributed elsewhere for other players. I.e. win your 1st & 2nd GS you keep all the money, win a 3rd & 4th and you get less and so on. I'm not sure what you think happens with stringers at tournaments, but somewhere, someone is being paid to string at them. The stringers at the ITF as are likely to be independent, and their revenue for doing the job comes direct from the players of that tournament. For Challengers, main Tour & GS the service is supplied under the guise of a company such as Babolat, Head, Wilson etc; and those stringers are also independant but are contracted by said companies, and paid by them. If you think that the ITF/ATP/WTA pay stringers, then that doesnt happen. There are no stringers that are retained by the governing bodies. FYI, my job includes stringing at all levels of tournaments; and have done so for the last 17 years.

I'm a stringer, and watching this demo, the whole system itself from the rotating top, the flying clamps, the floating puller, with manual analog tension set... it all looks very flimsy. But in the end, it's exactly as you said, life on tour is different.
@joelw8780
@joelw8780 4 жыл бұрын
I completely agree. I've ordered this and tried to do two rackets with it. It was very weird flimsy device. Yes you can string a racket but the time it takes and elements needed to string it don't make it worth it. I've been stringing on a electronic pull tension machine for years and this doesn't quite cut it. If you have a fairly loose setup, it might work better for you, but anything in the 55+ range didn't offer me much accuracy.

Dear Harry, I know you're big into strings and stringing. Could you please do a video on the effects of stringing strategies? I'm particularly interested in tension of mains v crosses. Lately, I've been stringing mains close to a racquets lowest recommended tension and the crosses about 10%-15% higher. What do you think? I have also gone the opposite, stringing the mains tighter and the crosses with less tension. I have also been adding to these tension combos using hybrids, some with poly mains and softer (multi or syn gut) crosses and some with Multi or Syn gut mains and poly crosses. Can you please do a video in which you get into the the pros and cons of these string set ups and tensions and how you would approach it? Love your videos! Thanks for all you do. lot nicer than the drop weight I started out with long time ago in juniors. Spoiled now with the wilson baiardo/babolat star 5. For that price you can get gamma. Is that the new pure dive tour your using? When you start the mains you can just pull out the first 2 starting mains evenly to get midpoint instead of having to walk back across the room. good luck on tour.

I bought the machine after seeing interview with a young pro on your channel. I like the machine, but disagree with your statement that you have to add 4lbs to get true tension. On the new machines, the tension meter is more precise and I can set it pretty exact to even numbers. I tested the tension and got the same tension on the machine, as on the tester.

Dean it’s not the tension being pulled that’s inaccurate, it’s the loss from the floating clamps. A starting clamp might help but floating clamps will always lose more tension compared to “good” fixed clamps.

Just want to mention, that you can't convert DT in pounds that easily. For sure it's a fine approvimation, but when you have the surface tension and want to get the tension you pulled with, you also have to have a look on: head size (which is considered, but also not very accurate) string pattern string string diameter stiffness rating of the racket just to name a few. Let's make an short example: You want your racket to bei strung at DT 35. If your racket is a prestige mp, you have to pull the strings much more loose compared to a Pure Aero in order to achieve the same DT value. That's because the prestige has a very dense string pattern compared to the Pure Aero, which also has ja larger head. Next time please compare DT values (measured DT value from a Pure Drive with Confidential 1.30 in your Wilson stringing machine), would be better in my opinion.

Moral of the story - if you are a pro, you don't care what kind of consistent tension on the top crosses because you are hitting on center I guess. The only reason he was able to pull the first cross with that kind of weak starting knot is that he double pulled, so the grommet friction was slacking the pressure on the knot. Don't to that at home kids. There are better way to start crosses with floating clamps. The simplest being learn to tie a proper starting knot (or if you don't like starting knot, use starting clamp I guess). Another option to use a starting pin to lock the floating clamp against the frame (this is how Kilpper does it - the only time I've seen a starting pin for sale is with their kit.) There are other ways too but I forget -- I think you pre-string up to the third cross, then lock that against the 2nd cross, pull tension on the 2nd and lock that against the 3rd as well, then pull the first, tie-off, then remove the first clamp you places, re-pull tension on the 2nd cross, lock it off against the first cross, remove the other clamp that is between 2 and 3, and then pull tension properly on the 3rd cross.... there's a reason I forgot. As for starting the mains, that just looks wrong to me. I want to hear the pitch of the two center mains and compare, then I will believe it's same on both sides. Otherwise, I think the top half of the first center main to be pulled doesn't get the full tension, and thus when you remove that clamp in the middle, you drop below the reference tension on one side.
