Tropical Freeze on the Switch isn’t a remake it’s a port, Donkey Kong Country Returns on the 3DS isn’t a remake, it’s a port.

There was no definitive way to play DKCR since the Wii version was held back by forced motion controls and the 3DS version was held back by the tiny screen and lower frame rate so I’m glad we’re getting this even if there’s no new content,I’m just happy I can finally play DKCR without forcing my sight or feeling like I just finished a boxing match after beating a world.

The Switch version of Donkey Kong Country Returns has levels from both the Wii version & the 3ds version.

It’s not a remake. It’s an HD remaster. You’re confusing the terminology. Port = same exact game and graphical features but on another console (an enhanced port can imply some additional QoL features to the newer port) Remaster = “best” version of the game with enhanced graphics and possibly some additional QoL features but preserving most of the original’s gameplay and scope Remake = full overhaul of the original game with new graphics and sound and revamped gameplay A lot of people did not experience the extra 3DS levels as the original Wii version was the base game. This has the best of all of the previous versions with non-motion controls, 60 FPS, enhanced graphics and the exclusive 3DS levels. As long as it’s appropriately priced (20-30 dollars), then preserving the original game with this scope is fine. If they go full price, then I completely understand why you would be disappointed. Tropical Freeze on Switch is considered an enhanced port as it’s has the exact same audiovisuals of the Wii U version with an extra mode for Beginners.

I think I would like Donkey Kong Country if I played it again but I do think that this HD Remake of Donkey Kong needs something new since it a returning game from the Wii that was put on the 3Ds with extra levels that didn't have online play on any of the consoles it was on previously anyways. Hopefully they announce something new for the game in another trailer before the game comes out on January 16th

I am quite divisive about this. On one hand, I do like that their remaking Donkey Kong Country Returns and making it on the Nintendo Switch, I mean think about this, both Kirby's Return to Dreamland on the Wii, Metroid Prime and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, both of which were made for GameCube, all three of which got remakes, and even Metroid Prime was even ported on the Wii. I like that their doing that because after all, Donkey Kong Country Returns is what many considered a Classic on the Wii. But on the OTHER hand.... this does feel a bit off, it's been 10 years since Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze, so it can be seen as a disappointment, because after all, we've already got a remake of Donkey Kong Country Returns on the Nintendo 3DS, so there-for, they're remaking an already remake of a game. I also found it odd that their remaking a game after remaking its sequel, Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze a few years ago. Also like you said, as of now, they didn't say anything new that was added to Donkey Kong Country Returns HD. That being said, I am looking forward to seeing what this remake has in store for us, tho I do hope that we get an all new Donkey Kong game.

Just put the original 3 in hd in a collection

Believe it or not, this game is going to be the only game from this direct that I am going to buy. DKC has a special place in my heart and this is the only DKC I haven't been able to play yet. DKC, Kirby, Fire Emblem, and Pokemon are my most favourite nintendo franchises. Since this direct only featured one from these four, I'm only getting DKC Returns HD.

What they should've done is make a remaster of all the original 3 games and combine them somehow.

I guess it's more like Year of the Port for Nintendo this year, with only a handful of actual "new" titles like Prime 4 and Brotherhood.

It's good to pay a re-visit to some of these games that were released on the Wii/Wii U and 3DS. I've beaten this game on both Wii and 3DS as well as Tropical Freeze on Wii U and Switch.

November would be the 30th anniversary to Donkey Kong Country 1...so having it in January makes absolutely no sense. I got a lot of mixed feelings here. On the positive side: I do think this will be the best "version" of the game. Playing on the pro controller and on a HD TV will be better than playing with the wiimote/nunchuck. But on the negative: This practically cements no true new Donkey Kong game on the Switch. Also, I felt Tropical Freeze was a 10x better game, so the fact they went with releasing that one first, makes this one seem disappointing. I hear optimists say that this just means a new Donkey Kong game is coming on the Switch successor, and to that I just facepalm cause it doesn't guarantee anything. This is a massive L from Nintendo to neglect a franchise as good as this. The whole Switch life and no new Donkey Kong Country game. 😔

the problem is that it's not a new game. It's been 10 years already. In that same timeframe there's been 3 new fire emblem games and 4 new kirby games.

Same thing with LM2. Announced last summer, took over a year to come out, nothing new added. Just senseless imo.

Nin, in the past, always stated that in order for a past game to get a release again, there needs to be something "NEW" added. Seeing nothing added just goes to show you that Retro Studio never was ready for the HD era when Nin got into HD during the Wii U days. They were way behind in & it shows Retro wasn't ready to make new groundbreaking tech games & compaines like MonolithSoft XCX suffered, as well as MonolithSoft stated they weren't for HD. This also played a role when Retro Studio were doing all those new hires that does in fact, show us their own in-house didn't have knowledge of the best next gen learning & they needed outside help. It's a reason why MP4 got delayed because Nin did not have more knowledge of the advanced next gen tech. So all these years look at what Retro Studio has put out? Doesn't that 100% show you with all the same ports they release tells you that they are still learning as they go alone. I think with Switch 2, we will finally see their next gen learning completed & start to get better looking new games & not ports.

I'm not sure if I completely agree with your statement. If it's all the way in january, there might be something new. Otherwise it'd probably be in september or october. Why would it take that long unless there's something new? Remember Kirby's Return To Dreamland Deluxe? Magolor Epilogue was revealed months after the remake's reveal. Would that make sense or am I just starting to go crazy?

It’s a shame we never gotten a brand new Donkey Kong game in over 10 years and one switch only getting two ports of previous DK games hopefully when the new Switch console gets a release date and releases we’ll hopefully finally get a actual new DK game and not another port. 🤞🤞🤞

I'll tell you why, it's because less than 3% of Switch owners picked up Tropical Freeze. Because Nintendo fans weirdly claim to love DK, but then they don't buy his games, so a lower risk lower cost remaster was necessary.

You said year of the remakes to remember that? What about the brand new Zelda game what about the brand new Mario game that's not a remake, what about the Metroid prime beyond which is the fourth Metroid crime which is not a remake. Yes there's a lot of remakes but there are a lot of new games too

The original donkey Kong country and Diddys Kong quest are still the best in my personal opinion seriously why we don’t have physical copies of ether of those is still a mystery to me😩 the Wii donkey Kong game was to be honest a disappointment for me….. seriously this just seems extremely lazy on Nintendos part. Nothing new nothing original no new additions and it’s not even available tell 2025 seriously……… nice way to give the finger to the player base😩 Seems Nintendo has singed onto the woke wagon with the rest of them…….

We are tired of re-releases of DKTP & DKR. We want a new DK game because it's been 10 years since DKTP and Nintendo gives us DKR again??? Nothing against the game its self but we're sick and tired of only getting old DK content. The next Nintendo console better have a new DK game.
