Another World Cup, another quarter final exit. England really do have a habit of falling short at this stage.
The history of the English national team is one that is as confusing as it is disappointing. The inventors of modern football, yet only winners of the biggest prize once in 92 years.
Today, we recount the story of the Three Lions. The highs and, more frequently, the lows.

As an argentinian, let me tell you this from experience: you DON'T want to scapegoat your young talents by blaming them over missed penalties and such. We wasted a lot of potential in the 2010s because of mistreating and blaming the players (particularly due to the 3 consecutive lost finals) and we had to wait until the 2020s for only SOME of them (others have retired) to get a satisfying closure with the World Cup. We're happy now, but we're also left wondering if they could've given us more trophies, had we subjected them to less intense scrutiny in the past.

Thats not true. They were to blame. Choke after choke for a decade. And we had talent but all up front, no defense or world class midfielders.Also Brazil was at its weakest in the 2010s so we had a golden opportunity to win it all in South America and the world cup but could not achieve anything.

I agree. England in recent years have had some embarrassing moments with Iceland 2016 and Costa Rica in 2014, but in the last couple of tournament, it has been more of a heart break than an embarrassment. Take the Semi final with Croatia were they lost in extra time in 2018, Kane missing his penalty vs France in the 2022 World Cup, and of course losing to Italy in the final on penalties at Euro 2020. They always choke at the last hurdle
@ecaeas4439

Tbf, that's somewhat to be expected. When you look at footballing giants like Germany or Brazil, there has always been chokes by those two but appearing consistently In the end stages of the tournament meant success came eventually. England's first final since 1966 was literally the euro 2020 finals, so its clear that the problem has been getting to the last hurdle in the first place. If England start appearing in semi finals and finals regularly, it would prove they're good enough and they would inevitably win something. Germany has won half of the finals they've appeared in, where Brazil have won 5 of the 7 finals they've appeared in.

@@ecaeas4439 Exactly, you can't succeed in international tournaments without experience and know-how, getting to the latter stages in most if not all tournaments will help and eventually everything will fall your way and it'll lead to a tournament win. It can change so quickly, until 2008 Spain was the big underachiever in international football with one solitary Euro win in 1964 and hadn't really come close to repeating that but by 2012 they had won it all and dominated everyone in their path. I feel this England team remind me of Germany at the turn of the century, lacklustre showings at the 1998 world cup and 2000 Euros (finished bottom of their group behind England) lead to a complete revamp in German football (similar to England with St Georges Park) this lead to multiple near missed with a semi-final in the 2006 WC, Finals loss in the 2008 Euros, another WC semi-final in 2010 and a Euros semi-final in 2012, a bunch of near misses but everything came together in 2014 where their young talented squad peaked and won the World Cup. England is at an impasse, they clearly have great quality and talent in their team now with good cohesion but they are struggling to get over the hump for one reason or another, they need to be more ruthless and efficient, especially when coming up against the elite like France otherwise there will be more tournament heartbreak. Ultimately England has a good chance to end their tournament win wait in the next decade, it seems the current crop of talent will peak around the next World Cup but you often need more than just quality to win these tournaments, whether England makes it to the promised land is another issue.,

Your last 5 words also form part of the problem. The amount of "World Class" talent in the team....look at the team that lost to France....how many of them would get into a "World team"? maybe Bellingham (although he'd likely start on the bench) the rest, and yes I include H.Kane are good, top class EPL players, but "World Class"... Would you swap Foden for Griezmann???...does England have a player like him or Modric...a No10 who sits and orchestrates?....Kane has been lauded for a good few years now, yet when the time comes for him to show the World what he has...he vanishes....a flat track bully scoring freely against lower ranked teams and...2 penalties in a game though...oh that's too much to handle...funny how a few days later Mbappe (a few years younger) manages 3.....time to realise England are a good international team...but nothing special

@@Lostouille I agree "it's coming home" may smack of arrogance but from my experience that is purely a tongue and cheek reference to the song. I realise I don't speak for everyone but among my friends and family noone expects anything yet we still sing the song and say it ironically. I think when taken at face value it can be seen as arrogant but here it's just a song (from my experience) and the irony is the song is that its saying we are going to fail "Everyone seems to know the score They've seen it all before They just know They're so sure That England's gonna throw it away Gonna blow it away" While it goes on to be more optimistic I feel this is largely the British view. The one thing I would say could contradict this is that song goes on to be more optimistic but in a very dream like way, "Never stopped me dreaming". So if it has been picked up in sincere light, I would say the song actually implies it is a dream like state. Positive yes but not arrogant as it saying despite how rubbish we are, we are still dreaming of winning it and the sport "coming home". Also the idea of it coming home is not an implication that we 'own' the sport, more a nod to the fact it was officially created in the country. That was so long ago though that we don't even recognise it from then. So with all that said I would say that I see it less as an arrogant declaration of domination or brilliance but instead a hopeful yet pained jokey reference to a song saying that we will fail. We aren't trying to own the game we are just praying that we won't be as rubbish as we have been continuously for decades. (This is just based on my experience and is not meant to be true for everyone in the country)

You can win tournaments with that kind of coach though, so don't lose the hope. Vicente Del Bosque won WC and EuroCup and it's considered a "tool" in the hands of the players. I'm not speaking personally, but many people seem to agree Del Bosque inhereted a team and a playstyle from Luis Aragonés, the previous coach who made the radical changes (like leaving Raúl out of the 2008 Euro) and had real "character", against the media (he was a legend of Atlético, while Del Bosque was from Real Madrid, and the media favours Real Madrid, like A LOT). Even though he won big titles with Real Madrid, he was busted by Florentino Pérez. And even now, there were some leaked audios of Real Madrid's president from a corrupt cop in prison, and in one of them Florentino said himself Del Bosque wasn't a coach. Not even a good coach, not even a coach, and that's why he was fired from Besitkas. But even then, the results speak from themselves in both cases. I hope you lose every single major tournament you're in, to be honest I despise England National Team and celebrate every embarassment they perform. But take it from one of your enemies, sooner or later (and I think sooner rather than later) England will win the World Cup. I mean, once people joke about Spain choking and losing in the quarter finals for decades too. Both teams are very similar. Like England, they were our embarassment time and time again, always coming short. And then we won three titles, in a row, with a team that will be remembered in years to come as one of the best teams in history.

Southgate wasn't good enough in the Premier League, there's absolutely no chance England win a trophy as long as he is their manager. I mean look at some of his decisions during the 2022 World Cup; 1) No Ivan Toney in the squad despite being one of the best strikers in the Premier League at the moment. Fair enough if he's on the bench but not even making the squad was ridiculous. No Tammy Abraham was another questionable decision 2) Southgate has way too many favourites. Raheem Sterling had been awful at Chelsea and his form has been on a downhill trajectory for a while now and yet Southgate constantly picks him. Kalvin Phillips barely played at Man City and Pep called him overweight and he still makes the squad 3) Trent sitting on the bench. He's by far England's most creative player and one of the best attacking threats in world football and you shove him on the bench... Even if you acknowledge his weak defending, you can still work around that. Regardless of form, Trent is a generational talent you should be building your squad around. Play him as a wingback with 3 at the back. Play him as an inverted fullback and play with a box midfield. Play him in midfield. Do something at least Yes Trent until the very end of the 22/23 season was in poor form, but since Southgate always picks Maguire, it's not like form plays an important role in who makes the squad It's things like that which is why I have zero faith that Southgate will win a trophy with England

In recent tournaments, we have mainly left tournaments feeling embarrassed until the last few where it ended in heartbreak World Cup 2014 - Very little expectations under Roy Hodgson but we knew we were shit. Then ended up being embarrassed despite the low expectations with a group stage exit and an embarrassing loss to Costa Rica. Euro 2016 - Very little expectations again. We looked very absolutely shambolic under Roy Hodgson. We struggled in the easiest group in the tournament. We managed to get through. Then we hit a new low when we got knocked out by Iceland. Another embarrassment and a new low in English football World Cup 2018 - We had a new manager and nobody knew what to expect. We got to a semi final which was good. But obviously we bottled it on the final hurdle when we played Croatia and ended up 2-1 in extra time after initially winning 1-0 Euro 2021 - We had high expectations. We were looking good under Southgate and we felt like we had a chance of winning it. We got to the final for the first time in 55 years. Once again we bottled it in the last hurdle vs Italy. We were 1-0 up, got pegged back to 1-1 and then ended up losing on penalties. World Cup 2022 - We were looking like an outside favourite until we played France. We went 1-0 down, equalised, then went 2-1 down and then we missed a penalty which lost us the game. Heartbreaking but not surprising. We always seem to bottle it at the last hurdle due to bottle a winning advantage or missing a penalty/losing a penalty shootout. I remain hopeful for the future though. Come on England!

Sorry but England don't have no way near enough talent to win the world cup. While they have highly talented players, they DON'T have great players, that's the difference. And they never have. I think a big problem with England is we over rate our talent. But if you think about the previous world champions and the players they've produced, they're all FAR better than any English player that's ever played the game. Messi, Mbappe, Iniesta, Xavi, busquets, canavaro, Nesta, pirlo, Ronaldo, ronaldinho, Rivaldo, Romario, Zidane. I could go on but I think it's obvious that players like Saka and Foden are NOWHERE near that level. And that's the calibre of player you need in order to win the World cup.
@Harry-tb8yo
@Harry-tb8yo Жыл бұрын
@@lyrickoner You do not need players of the highest quality level to win a world cup. Examples? Uruguay 1950, Germany 1954, 1974, 2014, Argentina 1978, Italy 1982. These teams were not the most skilled ones in the respective tournament but they made it up with mentality and ruthlessness. The national team of my country, Germany, played eight world cup finals and they were considered favorites in only two of them, 1990 and 2014. In two of the finals Germany won they were the underdog but overcame the better skills of Hungary and Netherlands. If it were just the skills that matter there would be just one world champion ever and that would be Brazil.

Have to say that while it definitely used to be true that England fans (mostly as caricatured by the media) used to believe England should win the world cup, I don't think it's true now. Paradoxically as we've become more consistent in the last 5 years, the expectation of winning has become less. As ever in England, this is less to do with what real fans ( who are generally quite knowledgeable about the game and our limitations) and ALOT to do with our insane and stupid media who see an opportunity to make money out of our participation in international tournaments.

Euro 2016 - lose to a team with population same size as Coventry. Player for player inexplicable but we would have lost to France anyway had we gotten through. World Cup 2018 - sneak into the lead but get overrun in midfield by superior technicians Euro 2020 - take the lead and sit back and it goes to penalties you know what happens next. Congratulations on yet another great video! The criticisms of Southgate that hold weight are around his tactical choices in big games. Unfortunately for Gareth, he's learning on the job. Unlike some of his contemporaries, he's never had a big job before and never had to make these kinds of big decisions before. Unfortunately, now there is an attitude that has started to emerge of the team doing well in spite of him, which I think is insulting. Part of being a manager is having a team that wants to play for you, and this team clearly does. England will have greater successes, which probably won't be under Southgate, but time will be kinder to him in the long run.

Nice one bro. My thought is this, England should build a team that suits a certain philosophy by picking the best suited players at each position rather than big names thrown together to form a team. The hype does nothing to help tournament football. Have a team of players who are very good in their own role and then have alternatives on the bench. Get a coach who’s flexible with his tactics and can maximize the potentials at his disposal. If Jude is box to box, what’s Henderson’a role? If Foden is deployed as a wide left, why choose a left back that’s not so strong in defense. A team wins and not a collection of individual hyped up names. The good thing is that England has the ingredients. Bellingham should be deployed for specific reasons and not be a jack/of-all-trades. England also needs a skilled creative player in the middle. I don’t know any Englishman that fits that mold. The closest is the Leicester guy for me. Good luck

I've been watching football for what feels like an eternity, and yes, my first World Cup was 66' albeit, I don't remember much except the final. Every single time it never felt like that team that was playing the absolute best, was going to, without a doubt, win it. It doesn't take a team that is playing incredibly superior to the rest, to win it, but rather it's a group of teams that are playing at a good, even decent level, and one of them has all the planets align for them in that moment. England, much like say, Netherlands, have always played good football and they've always hovered among the top, but luck hasn't smiled upon them much. Keep that level, one day it'll come. I don't think football will cease to exist, it's not like a race to see who wins more, but a question of patience. Argentina showed us just that, that you don't have to have a star-studded lineup or a golden generation of players, to be able to aspire to winning the Cup, just the hunger and will to obtain it and yes, some high level footy

I think that England in international tournaments gets about as far as they should with the teams they have. If you take away Spains wc win 2010, only 5 different countries have won a wc since 1970. Brazil, Argentina, Italy, Germany and France. That's it. And all those countries imo have just had more talented teams more often than England.

A very well produced and informative video, though as an England fan it brought back some painful memories.😆We are serial chokers when it comes to missing penalties in pressure situations, with Harry Kane just the latest in a very long list.

I think the days of the English expecting their national team to win a cup are long gone. I never hear anyone saying they expect england to win it, in fact it is the exact opposite as all you hear is the expectation of England under performing.

Not really lol. Disappointment again but was it that bad ??? France will probably go on to win the tournament and we outplayed them We have one of the best quality sides in the world, an experienced manager. It’s not hopeless like people make out And explain to me how this WC was an underperformance lol?

@@TurboGauchiste not really, the narrative that open play goals = played better is a more oversimplified narrative After the shakey first minutes and after tchoucha scored England controlled the game and frequently had high quality passages of play. Some leading to extraordinary saves from Lloris and 2 of which leading to deserved penalties. Let’s not even get into that the first goal shouldn’t have stood, but none of the officials seen so …

if you are going to bring up the moderate success in CL in the 2000s, I think it's only fair to bring up the much larger success in the 70s and 80s until Heysel. England dominated with mostly English players while the 2000s were much more diverse squads. The early 2000s success was nothing close to going to the achievement of 8 finals in 9 years and winning 7. The international failure then was far more disappointing than the not so golden generation.

@@nt300ukyes you're quite right. I was clearly thinking about 83 through 86 and beyond. The last 2 finals they appeared including Heysel was predominantly foreign players. Have to say why England didn't just play that Liverpool team from 76 to 78 is a question

As an Uruguayan, I can tell you than here there are amateur neighbourhood teams, usually group in cities, league know as baby-fútbol (baby-football), for kids from 6 to 13 if I'm not mistaken, in mostly public fields ... in my time most didn't have grass more like hard dirt (In Montevideo the capital of 1.5M there are about 80) and the parents of the kids pay a little monthly feed that mostly goes to pay the coach and balls and the parents involve in the club do it for free of course. Scouts from the pro clubs will then select kids from their clubs witch also have. Also kids from low income neighbourhood have open spaces to play like squares (plazas). Do kinds of low income families in big cities in England have public spaces to play football or something like baby-football???

Yes we do. Loads of local clubs on cities and rural areas, and the parent pay a fee for the recourses and such.
