Gen Alpha are given an ipad at birth, and their parents wonder why they have little to no magination and social skills. Having a conversation with ur siblings and friends is better than staring at an ipad

It's ironic how the same people who are complaining about my generation (Millenials complaining about Gen Z) are the same people who are giving their children Ipads instead of actually raising their kids. Fellow gen Z's: please, I beg you. Don't raise Ipad babies. We can be better and learn so the past doesn't repeat itself and make sure that any kids you may raise know, not to raise Ipad babies either.

All these causes contribute to the problem. I would argue that the main one is the high life cost of having children. Together with the high cost of housing, healthcare, and transport (depending on the case), having a child makes the so promissed consumistic lifestyle unreachable.

As a Gen Z, I don’t get why parents would trust their little kids use their phones or iPads. What if the child ends up ordering something expensive without the parents knowing. I remember when I was a young child, I just watch TV and play with toys. I never owned an IPad nor phone until I was a teenager.

I agree with you. One of my uncles had to get a new bank card because his kid would play on his phone often and used it for purchases. I can only imagine how stressed out my uncle was by the situation. There was a story about a 13 yr old girl in China who played games on her mom's mobile phone and she would make in app purchases and delete messages on the mom's phone regarding the transactions. One day, a teacher called the mom regarding the girl's frequent gaming and then, she found out when she looked at her phone. It was a hell of a shit show.

But dude... it was kinda just sad.. they sat there expressionless and silent, staring at cocomelon. I felt bad. Other kids come in and make noise / mess. Maybe a middlething would be best. Occasional use of technology well balanced with other things, creativity, sports and social play. What "everyone else" does shouldnt be the most important when the entire society is messing up, have to think about long term development, not just fitting in there and then
@KaIiyana
@KaIiyana 14 күн бұрын
To be fair, consuming content is not linked to a higher affinity with technology. Learning to use an IPad does not result in newer generations being better at understanding mechanics, programming or any practical skills. There are plenty of options i.e. Andruido building kits to teach children how to build and program things like light switches, own lil robots and all kinds of fun things. There are way more useful ways to interactively teach kids about technology and give them a deeper understanding beside scrolling and tapping ☺️

I am a gen z born in 2005 and based on experience, I had a good childhood. I actually enjoyed playing outside alone or with friends. I usually played basketball with my neighbors. Occasionally, I also climbed trees. The first time I got my own tablet when I was 7 but I still preferred playing with my toys (I was limited to 1 hour of screentime a day anyway). Speaking of toys, I once had a collection of bootleg legos. I also played board games like chess or scrabble. I also liked watching tv. There was this one time when my gen A younger brother talked about skibidi toilet to me and I was like "what the hell is a skibidi toilet". He still enjoys going outside and watching tv though.

Even then the only form of technology I'll introduce them to is television. Maybe when they become a little older I shall allow them to use the one family desktop computer; I'll make sure it's got a Windows operating system too. As a gen Y. you growing up with technology that we eventually got post high school... I think we are really in for a serious crisis. I remember when smart phones were only for extremely rich people or executives. We had flip phones with only basic text that could cost a quarter per text to send if you went over your 10 text limit for that day. We didn't have Google until we were in middle school. during that time to find information you had to go to a library to physically read a book to research something. Gen alpha knows how to work an interface but I doubt they will ever figure out how to create one or even know how it works. That doesn't make them smart

As an American kid my entertainment had similar messaging to what my school and parents were telling me. Be a good person, practice good nutrition, work hard, stay in school, don't do drugs, recycle, help your friends, don't bully others, etc. No matter who it was saying it, be it Hulk Hogan, Splinter, Egon, Swamp Thing, Captain Planet, etc. Even the "edgier" content I had access to, like Aliens, Robocop, and Jurassic Park, all had similar wholesome messages under the violence that I still picked up on, along with positive role models to emulate. The entertainment sphere of adolescence really was more insulated. We only had a few dozen channels on TV. Internet was barely a thing and what most people had was carefully filtered through services like Prodigy and AOL. Whatever music we got was filtered through radio stations, VH1 and MTV. The limited scope of our entertainment meant the most positive messages were the ones most repeated, which helped serve a moral foundation along with any religious/secular and parental instruction. Our parents and grandparents had an even more limited sphere of entertainment as adolescents, and for the most part had just as rigid of a moral foundation growing up. Unless parents are really alert to what their kids are choosing to consume, kids are growing up with less of a moral foundation. So we're seeing more amoral kids from Gen Alpha. Don't act surprised the next time you see a Gen Alpha kid do something horrible and when you ask why they say "I saw it on TikTok" in a tone that makes it sound justified bc, to them, it is.

I'm from Gen Alpha, but I'm not a toddler who watches these creepy ass videos 24/7, I'm worried for this generation. I think the reason Gen Alpha is like this is because technology is evolving way too fast and our parents don't understand a lot about it, so they just give an iPad to their children to keep them entertained. I have a 5 year old sister, sometimes she watches some of the weirdest videos on the planet, and also plays some weird games, I keep trying to make my mom change her mind about her behavior but she doesn't care. When I was younger, I watched Cars, Bolt, played on my PS3, and went outside.

Psychology student here, I'm terrified what kind of addiction problems these poor bastards might face. It's one thing to have an oral fixation, & get addicted to vaping. But imagine if the physical action of scrolling on a screen becomes a fixation of its own. These guys are doomed.

@@anires1195 I'm speaking specifically about children. Their frontal lobes are in the early stages of development, which means that they simply can't regulate themselves the way that adults can. So if adults give them an iPad to keep them busy or shut them up for hours, it quickly rewires their brain. Adults can still get addicted to scrolling, but since our frontal lobes are much more developed. This means our ability to self-regulate our actions is much stronger, even with conditions like ADHD. That's just the neurological aspect. On a more psychological/cognitive level, adults have a significantly longer lifetime of knowledge to serve as a basis for our decisions and how we understand the world. Children do not, and are in a state where they're constantly learning and relearning about the world around them. This means they are much more strongly affected by external things. If they spend most of their time scrolling on a device without the attention of their parent/parents, they will eventually assume that this is what life is and how things should be. They set their expectations there, without having really developed any solid social abilities. The following is a link to an NCBI paper regarding other developmental problems associated with excessive technology use at a young age. I invite you to read this & do as much of your own research as you wish. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC10353947/

That feeling of something missing is the addiction speaking. I have it, too. But, I'm lucky. I am a millennial, so I had to learn the skill of just zoning out during waits. Thinking about nothing and just let time pass. I swear these younger generations are unable to do so. I fear for the future greatly. I always had the feeling that my generation was dumber and less able than the one preceding us. And I fear the Zs and alphas are continuing the trend. I think youtube is still fine. Depending on what you watch it can be very educational or fulfilling. Some videos are even almost like movies. And back then it already encouraged me to do something productive and make my own videos about that. With tiktok it's like, short clips of garbage encouraging doomscrolling I guess. And if you get exposed to that kind of content I can understand the discussion about attention span getting shorter.
@KrisRN23935
@KrisRN23935 5 ай бұрын
@@thesciencefurryIt's gotten a lot better in that regard over time. From what I've seen, KZfaq used to be a lot less educational and more like what we think of Tiktok now. Though it wasn't as bad with the infinite scroll issues we have with Tiktok (and we have with KZfaq now because of trying to emulate Tiktok), it was mostly fluff. Mainly because KZfaq was mostly a place where teenagers, and young adults appealing to kids and teens in those days. A place to laugh. As time went on, those creators grow up and so did a lot of their audience. And the algorithm change around 2012 (which favored longer form videos) made it easier to talk about real issues than shorter form vids did. Not to say that humor is dumb or unimportant, but in general KZfaq got a lot more varied in its content and that made it all the better for the viewer. I'm hoping with time Tiktok could one day do something similar if it doesn't go away (which in its current state, I would be okay with).

Milennial here, praying for Gen Alpha. We have our problems that definitely trickled down to Gen Z but this is a whole new thing. I had books, VHS tapes and eventually DVDs, action figures/dolls, video games you didn't need to be connected to the internet for... the PLAYGROUND. Gen alpha will see less value in these things in shamefully increasing amounts.
@Wveth
@Wveth 6 ай бұрын
I'm a millennial too, and from my perspective, the problems that have become critical in Gen Alpha started with us (although no doubt you could trace the causes even further back). ADHD diagnoses started to rise with our generation, the 90s were really when the post-Cold-War decline really started to set in (due in large part to a massive corporate deregulation effort), and our growing hopelessness made the emerging Internet a very attractive place for many of us to hide. Many of our fellow millennials just disappeared onto the Internet and into depression going into their adulthood. Those generational struggles were passed on to Gen Z and made even worse as the economy began to decline much more sharply, and things that were merely far too difficult for millennials (like owning a house) became outright impossible for Gen Z. Our depression and mental health struggles were passed on to them, except now the kids were actually growing up with the Internet from infancy, and they were emerging into a world that was even less prepared or equipped to deal with their problems. To me it seems like Gen Alpha is just the next escalated step of this problem. They're even more cynical, even more Internet-addicted, with even more pervasive ADHD. These were more-or-less the problems I was accused of having as 14-year-old millennial in 2003. They're just even worse now because we never dealt with the problems at the core of it all and instead let the problems compound over multiple generations.

@@Wveth "Isn't it weird that we never had any ADHD diagnoses before we started diagnosing ADHD?" That's how you looked right now. ADHD is a neurodivergence that is largely genetic. I know you're young, but just as a general rule, if you're ever just blaming an entire generation of people, you're wrong. People act the way they act for reasons, and no matter how responsible you think they might be, just getting angry with them and shaming them is only going to make things worse. It makes more sense to try to find the social problems that create problematic people, rather than just chastising the problematic people.

Lately, I’ve been trying to set time limits to my screen time, becoming more productive, reading financial books, and controlling my diet. Seeing the latter half of Gen Alpha, I am truly disappointed at parenting these days. Maybe when I’m older I’ll just escape into rural Russia or Austria to just escape from modern society.

2006 kid here. Nothing will ever beat the memory of me and my lil brother going outside, picking up a bunch of dirt and leaves, bringing them inside the house and into the laundry basket, turning off the lights and dancing around the basket to “bring back the sun or some shit”. My mom would be horrified. I can tell why some parents give iPads to their kids to avoid such situations but let’s be honest, kids need that kind of stimulation. If you can’t handle your kids getting messy with dirt then don’t have them. Kids are the messiest lil shits but they need that messiness to literally grow up. A lot of parents don’t understand that nowadays. At the moment I babysit a bunch of kids and I make them do these activities where we glue leaves onto a paper but I swear to god they go CRAZY when the parents come back, begging to know where the parents hid the screens. This generation is kinda doomed but I do see some hope if we can get them to play outside more

When I was older I began to read books about crimes and crazy cyberspace adventures. I just started to get into the internet stuff when the Corona Pandemic hit ( I was 13 at that time). Its so sad to see how these little kids dont have an atention spine. Literally a 4 year old can more talk in the internet slang than i could ever talk 😨. Who knows what could’ve happened if I hadn’t grown up on reading books, going outside, watching cable and actually being a kid, (basically anything BUT an iPad) what would happened to me by now.
