Olivia and Nathan here!
Madeira is a Portuguese island located off the coast of West Africa. We spent a month here and by making friends with some locals were lucky enough to get more of the inside scoop on this place, beyond doing just the typical 'top things to do.' Cheers!

My family left the Azores and Madeira to work the pineapple and sugarcane fields of Hawaii with the intent of making some money and returning home. They married Native Hawaiians, became US citizens, and never went back. Four generations later, I'm planning my first trip to see both locations at 62. Can't wait! 🌺

How can you complain about rising rents and increasing housing problems for residents and at the same time share an airbnb discount code❓️❓️❓️ Airbnb IS the reason for all these problems! You can see it all over the world in every popular city or tourist region. That's unjustifiable in my opinion. I would never ever book airbnb!

Guys first of all madeira is semi sub tropical...... The problem of young people leaving is not a new one..... They've been doing this for ages..... You will find madeirans in South Africa, Australia, Brazil, Venezuela, Colombia, United States, United Kingdom, Panama, Spain, New Zealand, Ecuador, Bolivia, Angola, Mocambique, France, Ireland,..... In funchal there is a monument dedicated to the immigrant, madeira has a larger overseas population than on the island.... If you go to the village festivals you will meet visiting immigrants from all over the world, each with their unique story of leaving madeira to be able to give their offspring a better life.

Great video guys! If you look it up Madeira was the first tourist destination in Europe way back in the 18th century it’s just that the secret is out so the amount of people coming is enormous, I hope it doesn’t change I absolutely love it and if anyone misses yellow sandy beaches there is Port Santo just next door and one thing about Madeira too is how clean and well maintained it is and how genuinely friendly people are ❤️

Thank you for this great video. I fell in love with Madeira a few years ago when I travelled there for the first time in 2018. After Covid, I travelled back in 2022 and 2023, and I am already planning to head back in 2024. Something about this island has really touched my heart, and I too am worried about the potential impact of excessive tourism on the island and the locals. Cruiseship tourism in particular usually has many significant negative local impacts on destinations. I generally love travelling to off-the-beaten places and staying away from crowds, and there is still a lot of opportunity for that in Madeira. It's such an amazing place.

I rarely comment on holiday/travel vlogs but having stumbled upon this video by accident, I must say as a retired academic that I am impressed by Nathan and Olivia. Their observations are helpful, down to earth, occasionally punctuated by a dash of quirkiness but the narrative is unequivocally literate and intelligent. They highlighted legitimate problems at the end, and kudos in particular to the element of self-reflexivity.

I agree with the over tourism aspect of your concerns. I will say, as somebody who lives in the West Country region of England in which we see massive amounts of tourism during the summer which inflates our housing and food prices, if you are a tourist....DO NOT USE AIRBNB!!!!!!!!! Use hotels, bed and breakfast's, campsites, but DO NOT fund a company which actively seeks to decimate local housing stock! Anyway, big love to Madeira and Portugal
@angelauska

@nathanpym So true about AirBNB!! I would never ever make accomodation through them. It ruins housing prices for locals and only fills Ashton Kurcher's pockets who owns AirBNB.

Man! What a beautiful video... as always. We love Portugal and have wanted to visit Madeira for a while now. Those sleigh rides look intense. Thanks for calling out the darker side of tourism. I think you handled the issue well... presented the challenge without being overdramatic about it. We were just discussing similar issues we came across in Siem Reap. Spent 2 weeks on Madeira a few months ago and I agree 100% with the problems talked about and the locals we spoke with agreed. I'd also like to add one more to the list. The roads that are good are great and the roads that are not are well....sketchy. Was amazed how many mainlanders had never visited Madeira or the Azores while the young Madeirans were leaving to go to the mainland. My grocery bill has went up since going to Madeira because I now keep a jar of Poncha made up at all times 😂

I really respect your opinion. And it's true that locals give their best to visitors and inflation is too big for locals. life is becoming so expensive for locals as the cost of living after COVID has increased drastically. I'm a resident here and work for tourism. And I admit, I love this island and I recommend everyone come here because I, who have lived in other countries, can say, we live in paradise. Whoever comes here will definitely come back. and you will come back one day without a doubt. good temperature, good weather, good food, very kind people and truly a very clean island. About 25 years ago our tourism was very elderly, but this island is good for young people. Come and discover Madeira Island, I highly recommend it.

My mother and Grandmother were born on Madeira Island. My grandma born 1914 and m y mom 1936. They left the Island after the war. My Great Grand Father migrated in 1909 where my grandfather was born in Lowell Mass. He migrated back to Madeira in the 20s when his father died in a mining accent. He was summonsed to the Portuguese Navy in 1939 for the war effort. He showed them his papers showing he was a US citizen. He left to the US and enlisted in the Army and fought in the Pacific during WW2. My mother and Grandma came over in Mar of 45. For those who dont know the shipping lanes where shut down and the German U-boats patrolled the waters off of the Island. U 515 was sunk off the coast on 9 Apr 1944 with 43 prisoners by the USS Pope. The commander of that ship just happened to live in my neighborhood LT COMDR. E.H Headland I wound up with a 20MM shell that was engraved for the actions in which I know own. I plan on visiting the island. The house my mom grew up in is still in the family

Madeirans are unhappy with this new wave of tourists who aren't willing to spend money. Seems as though social media has attracted the wrong type of tourism. 1. Campers: Will cut costs by sleeping in a car or a tent and won't go to restaurants or help support local business in anyway. 2. Cruise tourists: Won't go to restaurants because food is included with cruise package. Limited time on the island. Can barely take anything back on to the cruise. 3. Clout chasers/social media influcencers: Rude, not interested in culture, most likely will go to Ronaldo's museum and leave. Madeirans are getting fed up, young people are leaving Madeira for a better opportunity. Which ofcourse causes a shortage of workers. Meanwhile Venezuelan's and Brazilians are taking over the island in which most are descendants of Madeirans who emigrated in the 60s and 70s. Even they aren't happy with the situation in Madeira and are trying to go to mainland Europe or return back to Venezuela/Brazil. Obviously, this doesn't resolve the shortage of workers. Madeirans in South Africa don't want to return to Madeira due to the banking scandal which saw them lose all there money, furthermore they would rather live in UK, Canada, New Zealand for a better opportunity. Crime in Madeira is getting out of control, a lot of people getting addicted to drugs. Limited parking spots for everyone. Tourists are resorting to parking there car in the middle of the road. In the end, most tourists won't return to Madeira as its left a bad taste in there mouth. Even the tourists who appreciate Madeiran culture and support local business won't return. Its a lose lose situation for everyone. By the way I don't live in Madeira but this is just my observation as my family are Madeiran and I go to Madeira every 3-4 years. I also watch RTP Madeira and this is a topic that is being debated every week.

There were TOTALLY limited options in reasonably priced accomodation. And the issue of whether they can withstand the demands in tourism is one that's plaguing SO many places around the world. Same issues from upstate New York to the Balkans/Croatia. And the brain drain with young people leaving to make more money (especially in educated areas) is huge and further worsens the long term sustainability of the country (both culturally and economically) on the ground.. Also, I was cracking up at them naming the airport after Ronaldo, somehow I totally missed that. LMAO.

Great video - overcrowding is happening almost everywhere now. I am on a 3-month trip from Canada to Europe to Asia, and every place seems crazy. No going back because it is NOT just posted covid pent-up demand but long-term China/India/Asia wealth growth that is exploding travel. Add to that remote work opps for US/Euro peeps while also the increase of fiat currency which expands $$ wealth to millions more US/Euro, and we have millions more people traveling.

Maybe many tourists also go for Madeira since the climate in southern Europe has been unbearably warm the last couple of summers.

Love Madeira. Very respectful video. You did it justice. How many runs did it take to compile that awesome footage on the downhill basket ride? Top effort!!!

My daughter and I had to reschedule our trip because of health issues which still plague us. We were hoping that a week of sun & surf in and around Funchal (we will have no car) would do us good. Now we feel like exploiters & that we should have returned to Malta.

I went there with my wife in 2013. We were the only people on the flight out who didn't have white hair. The following morning this guy asked us what made us choose a geriatric holiday? It was nice, and we may go back....in 20 years!

The indiana Jonesy vibes are word for word why I went. Ill never understand the "dont come" comments. I come from a place with rediculously high living costs and one of the highest rates of tourism, ive never heard anyone tell tourists not to come, because we will go everywhere!

It took you eight minutes to get to the answer. Cue Minute 8:00 - Madeira doesn't have beaches at all Folks. Madeira is a Treker's Island, not a Beach and umbrella twister. Everyone visiting needs to know that. The Beach is located at Porto Santo or back on the mainland. You'll be lucky to count to 10 before reaching the end of any sandy beach here on the Madeira. They're all (that small here folks). And as for that Globalization swallowing up the local Real estate and causing sky-rocketing housing and rent prices - just ask Venice, Monaco, Hawaii, Florida, Califoria, etc., etc. how well the Locals were ever able to stop that trend? In another 30 years, most the Banana plantations here will be gone and you'll find wall-to-wall homes running the perimeter of the island. If you don't believe me, compare photo's from 30 years ago against shots from today. The trend is unmistakable. If you want an unforgettable Beach, try the white limestone sands on the Beaches of Cancun, Mexico on a Full Moon night. It's literally brighter than a Sunrise and it'll give you a memory you'll never forget.
