As a woman of color, I hate how many people are rallying behind the race-swapping in Disney’s remakes. Instead of giving us original stories with the same love and care that went into their previous movies, Disney is throwing us their table scraps, and we’re defending it. Disney is a multimillion dollar company. They need to do better

For originality, Encanto was BOSS. And I completely agree. Atlantis would actually be AMAZING as a real life movie over things like classic Disney cartoons.

Can we please address the horrible CGI in many of these new remakes? I feel like this is also an issue for many new films, including marvel movies, but these remakes are going to age like rancid milk because they already look mediocre. The original versions have a timeless look that is still beautiful today.

Disney Should've rebooted their past poorly Performed movies to redeem themselves, but they chose not to. Movies Like Treasure planet and Atlantis the lost Empire deserve the reboot treatment.

The problem with 'dont fix what is not broken' is that they actually change everything but the names about the ips. Race swapping, weird morality swap, complete change of the story to be female centric. Dont get me wrong, female lead movies can be great, but changing a known story for it just isnt doing it.

I think Disney missed a massive opportunity to make Aladdin a Baliwood type movie. Can you imagine the colors, the dancing, the MUSIC! Will Smith is good as the genie, but he knew he couldn't replace Robin Williams; and he was only comfortable with the role when he stopped trying to. He achieved what he needed to do and he's fun to watch!

I actually liked the Cinderella live action movie. It stays true to Cinderella's approach on feminism without making it too woke, they actually managed to give Prince Charming a personality, they established more plot that was both relevant to the story and to Cinderella's character, and the costume designs were amazing. Also, Cate Blanchett steals every scene she's in-her acting and her gowns are just stunning. The only problem I had with it is how slow-paced it was.

Out of all the remakes, Christopher Robin was really well done and it actually moved me to tears. It was so cute.

You wanna know what happened to Disney? They began pushing identity politics rather than quality storytelling.

I’ve shown my younger sister all the Disney movies. We did a marathon that started when she was a small child where we went in order. She’s now in her teens and we’ve seen the more original movies in theaters, like Tangled and Frozen, but none of the Live-action, those we watch on DVDs from the library. She kind of grew up watching what I did growing up in the 90s. A lot of her friends though, did get inspired to watch the originals because of the Live-action. A common opinion was that the animated ones were better and that they wished they’d seen those in theaters. Which makes me wonder if what Disney wants is money, why not rerelease the animated ones in theaters every 10 years or so. Market it using that nostalgia “Now you can take your kids to experience the classics of your childhood!” They’d make so much money from that.

Mulan is my fave Disney movie of all time. I was absolutely heartbroken by the live action. I was excited when they announced it because I thought this would be a slam dunk for Disney. There weren't many animals to cgi, the songs would've been AMAZING, but they just... It was an abomination. I hadn't really had a strong opinion about most of them I mean I recognize a cash grab. The Lion King wasnt great, but Mulan had me ready to flip tables at Disney headquarters!!!

What hurts the most is growing up disney always talked about imagination being so important, now imagination doesn’t matter.

Another point would be Disney embedding political talking points in their movies in terms of casting, plots, etc., which take you out of the movie. No matter if you agree with a political point or not, nobody wants a lecture from a corporation.

This reminded me when the live action Mulan came out. Disney made Mulan “more serious” by removing all of the good songs to make it “more realistic” but added a witch and a phoenix😐 My mom said she liked the live action better and I’m standing there confused like, how??? Not to mention Mulan’s motive to go to war. In the remake it’s bc of her chi, but in the original Mulan goes instead of her father to keep him safe, showing her that she deeply cares about her family. Idk it’s just weird how the remake would be better, it just didn’t work. Just wanted to rant lol

The funniest crap I’ve ever seen about this was when I found an article about how Disney is “a pioneer of representation!” And the article said, “Disney has been doing great with representation, from making the cyclops in ‘onward’ a lesbian, to casting real life Asians in Mulan 2020!” Real life Asians. Wow.

I think I still hold so much love for the first Alice in Wonderland live action because of the dark fantasy aesthetic. It tickles my inner pre-teen who was in their emo phase when it came out lol

I really did like Maleficent, taking it from the villains perspective is interesting...like Wicked a retelling from the Wicked Witches perspective in Wizard of Oz. I think those are far more creative when it comes to remakes because it comes from a very different perspective which makes it feel fresh...rather than a remake of the same old thing...takes care of the nostalgia backlash and gives the audience a fresh take on the same tales.

The problem isn’t necessarily remakes themselves. It’s changing everything about the original (or the original we all remember and love) or politicizing what shouldn’t be and turning it into something else. They commandeer a classic to mold into their garbage and think no one will notice or care. It’s lazy.

It has 7 of the highest grossing movies in the last 8 years. It had 8 of the 10 highest grossing in 2019. It is the monopoly of the film industry. On the same day that he announces more sequels and franchises, he lays off 7,000 employees to boost profits. That's Disney.

As a parent of a 4-year-old, she has my old VHS player attached to the TV and has her own selection of hand me down VHS Disney movies. We also have Disney+ for all of the other movies that we don't have. I personally won't let her watch the remake movies until she has seen the originals. Gotta appreciate where it was to where it is now. Funny thing too, she prefers the originals so far to the remakes. She does *not* like the lion king remake at ALL and I don't blame her.

And now there's news that The Little Mermaid remake isn't even done with their CGI despite the May release date. What could possibly go wrong? 😂

My favorite live action remake has to be the Once Upon a Time series, it’s Disney inspired, with ridiculous campy plots, and one heck of a family tree, and incredibly fun to rewatch. Robert Carlyle is a gem

Speaking of "plagiarism" -- The reason Disney is doing all these remakes is because if you do a live-action adaptation of an animated story . . . YOU LEGALLY DON'T HAVE TO GIVE CREDIT OR PAY ROYALTIES TO THE ORIGINAL AUTHORS / ARTISTS. Also, it speaks to how effective Disney's brainwashing was over the last 40 years when every single film they make is called a "Classic" . . . in the film's own trailers, BEFORE it's even released to cinemas!

The live-action 101 Dalmations, with Glenn Close as Cruella, is phenomenal. It also would be a crime not to mention the other actors Hugh Laurie, Jeff Daniels, Joely Richardson, Joan Plowright, and Mark Williams. One I wish they would do a live-action remake for would be Treasure Planet. That movie came out at the wrong time and is sorely underrated

I don't consider Alice in Wonderland a remake because not only is it a princess formula where the original was not but also this was a completely unique story. I think that was the reason for its massive success. Now it's basically fanfiction rehashed of old material with the very same plot and plot points. (Britney, adore your videos, but the Disney Renaissance was in the 90s, not the 2000s. It started in 1989 with The Little Mermaid and ended in 1999 with Tarzan.)

Brittney, your remarks are dead on. It wasn't until you mentioned it that these remakes are targeted towards Millennials who are adults now because the common misconception is that, 1, adults don't watch animation unless there are children present. And 2, it's to elicit the feelings of nostalgia. Those remake may moreso be for us than the children you'd thinking they're targeting. However, on one note, I remember hearing that kids now don't care for traditional animation because, to them it's flat and boring. Animation geared towards kids are now mostly computerized. So...maybe they're killing 2 birds with one stone with these live action/cgi remakes? 🤷🏿‍♀️

Honestly, I think these live action remakes exist purely as a way to adjust copyright on theme park assets in order to maintain control in perpetuity since they've pushed copyright extension on the original material as far as governmental lobbying can take them...

About what you said regarding parents nowadays introducing their kids to Disney, i can say that at least my Dad did (and sometimes still do) that a lot. Everytime Disney does a remake he always ask my sister and i if we watched the original and if we didn't he usually play it or at least tell us to see it.

To be honest, a lot of Disney's classic movies are remakes of old fairy tales. The difference with them was that Disney put their own unique spin on those stories, making them feel original; whereas these new live action movies are close to shot-to-shot recreations of the prior movies.

What you said about the Cinderella movie was what my sister saw. Ever since she was a little girl, she's loved Cinderella. When the live action movie came out, my mom bought her the DVD. When asked later how it was, she said the same things you did. She didn't care for it.

I'm quite worried about how the LA ver of The Little Mermaid will play out, since the original animated movie was my favorite as a child. I even enjoyed the the 2nd Little Mermaid and the prequel movie! But seeing how they've treated previous beloved works like Beauty and Beast, it makes me hesitant to see it. Or to even pay to see it. But at the same time I want to see with my own eyes to give it a fair shake. I just hate that despite my thoughts of it, the company will only see that I paid and automatically think it was worth it.... I'm in quite the pickle

The remake that truly broke my heart. Into The Woods. I know it isn't everyone's cup of tea but the original play and basic idea behind Sondheims works is just pure folklore classic.

I'm waiting with excitement and dread to see what Disney's live action version of Lilo and Stitch will be like. It's been a couple of years since Disney announced that it would remake it after Little Mermaid, which would be a "less harmful and stereotypical representation of the Hawaiian people." Although I'm surprised that the representation of Hawaii in Lilo and Stitch was harmful, because before Disney's announcement I didn't think it that way at all and I'm sorry that I haven't seen it as harmful representation of them (if it really was, because I haven't had a chance to ask the Hawaiians about it and what they think themselves). But it is true that these remakes are driven by money because nostalgia is believed and seen to sell to a more mature audience and they are not actually done to right the wrongs of the past.

If they really felt the *need* to double dip their own IP, the least they could have done was make them Muppet movies, because goodness knows they could use the work. Live action Beauty and the Beast with Emma Watson and Sweetums, Pinocchio with Gonzo and Pepe. Make it meta in the good way.

What makes me sad is that Disney is truly lazy and has become a greedy self serving company. They've made amazing original films. Encanto, Coco, Moana and The princess and the Frog were great original, diverse films. They have the potential, but they don't care about their audiences anymore.

Hey! Love your Velma series, and I'm so glad you're covering this. I'm 21 and grew up on Disney Classics like the Aristocats. I've no interest in seeing any of these live-action movies. The actors just aren't good aka Will Smith doesn't hold a candle to the one and only Robin Williams. And my biggest complaint is I love and miss the soul of the classics. The live-action animals especially have no soul, and it honestly disturbs me. Sebastian being a real lobster is something I never want to see. Also, the music isn't nearly as good.

For me, it's the constant need to look back and fix everything that is stopping Disney from making great strides forth! For every encanto there is like...unnecessary 4 remakes. I question the integrity of those running Disney, and I'm more convinced than ever that Disney rushed their abominable Pinocchio remake to release at the same time as Guillermo's, which is really shady.

I still think it's a shame they closed down their 2D animation studio. There's just a certain charm to 2D animation that is harder to achieve in 3D animation and live action/CGI. I do like the 3D animated Disney movies I've watched, but I just wish they had kept on making 2D animated movies as well. As you pointed out in the video, things like expressions on characters are much better in their cartoony Disney style vs a hyperrealistic CGI animal. To be honest, so far I've not really cared for most of the live action remakes, and I'd much rather just watch the originals 😅 Like... I love Lilo and Stitch for example but pls Disney I really don't need a weird looking, uncanny valley CGI Stitch... The only live action remake I'd probably be okay with would be Treasure Planet, that one deserves more love.

K, the only memory I have of the live-action Cinderella is watching it with my friends, all of us really liking Cinderella’s ballgown, and all of us headcanonizing that the Stepmother murdered her last husband before Cinderella’s dad (and maybe him too?? idk tbh). Either than that, it’s a pretty mid movie

I just have to say, Jonny Depp and Tim Burton were at the peak of stardom during Alice’s time. Also adding to its success.

Cinderella 3 is one of those sequels that was sincerely funny and good

Personally, I love the live action Cinderella. It is different enough from the original, and I think the actors were perfect for the roles. Also, that dress is amazing, and the transformation was magical to watch in theaters.

Disney is becoming panicked because the IP for Mickey is almost up, just like with other characters. When true fans can get them and make better movies, Disney will have to rethink things. As far as nostalgia, i either in college or wkn as a nurse when a lot of these movies came out like The Lion King, Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast. I have SO many memories of babysitting my niece, dancing around and singing that i couldnt being myself to see these LA ones. Beauty and the Beast is my fave but i can probably recreate every scene of Aladdin. To this day i can reenact the entire Friend Like Me scene lol!! But even as an adult without my niece i loved Disney princess movies. I own The Princess and the Frog. I loved Brave (i know people dont like it but i do). I own a lot of the old ones and love them. But i will say Disney no longer makes memorable songs that you love to sing that never get old (or annoying). I miss that 💔.

Live action reboots of any animation are hit and miss for me. Disney's are almost always a me...especially when the original animation is an all animal cast like Lion King and Robin Hood. 101 Dalmatians and the 2 Scooby Doo movies were well done but you had a lot of human characters in those. I introduce every kid who comes to my house to animated Disney classics.

Disney don't even care about proper remakes anymore. They want to check off as many "social justice" checkboxes they can to appeal to the absolute smallest group in society that won't even pay to go see the movie in the first place. I do not gain anything by Ariel being black. It's only there because they think it'll make them money. Not because they actually care about an authentic black mermaid story.

I actually liked Christopher Robinson movie too. I was kinda forced into watching it, expecting to snooze through it, but it turned out to be a pleasant surprise.

The only live action that I think should have been made was Pete's Dragon. It was significantly different from the original, had something new to say, and fankly, the original wasn't exactly that good. All the rest were too similar to justify a whole remake. Maleficent and Cruella were the only others that told a different story, but they felt like they should be in a Wicked series, where they explore the classic villains. Cruella would have been the second in that series if they leaned into it. I would much rather they leaned into these live action alternate universe versions of their villains to tell a different story about them than basically copy/pasting their old stories.

The thing is, Disney's first live action remake was 101 Dalmatians a decade and a half before Alice in Wonderland.

Every time they mention the live action Cinderella it's like I didn't even know it existed. Also, why doesn't anybody talk about live action 101 Dalmatians like Glenn Close wasn't an ICONIC Cruella DeVille?!

The last remake I saw was the CGI Lion King and something about knowing everything that's going to happen while also not getting to enjoy the animation left me feeling kinda..empty. I haven't seen the Mulan, Dumbo or Aladdin remakes; heard such negative things about them that I was afraid to see what they had become. I did see Cruella, since it's a familiar character with a different story. It has serious moments yet doesn't dwell on them for long, it made her character understandable but didn't make the audience feel too much empathy, keeping a quick-pace (sort of the Disney Harley Quinn). Overall it was a fun ride and I recommend it👍

Will be honest…. After Cinderella I WAS DONE!!!!!!….. plenty of plot inconsistencies….. also the 50 version she coordinates the mice and dog to get her out…. The live action she just cries?….. never bothered again!

Also. I live with a roommate who says animation is just for kids and as person who wanted to be an animator when i was younger, it’s really frustrating to hear them say that when they don’t even try to watch the movies or shows.

I personally really enjoyed Maleficent and Mirror Mirror. I felt that those live action remakes were a lot more creative and fun to watch, putting a new spin on the old stories. The ones that came after were really disappointing though. I remember being extremely bored in theatres during the Beauty and the Beast remake lol Idk I think they started out good and then Disney just got lazy about it afterwards

Oh my goodness you would not believe how many times I DETEST when people say that think animation is "just for kids". Animation can do so much more than entertainment, it's actual art! And I do notice that only in America they would do this because they just love to label anything to one group only. It was worse is that if you're an adult and watch cartoons they want to say that you're weird or you need to grow up. It's tiring.

Ok I am gonna be honest, I have trouble reading facial expressions in part due to my autism, so the reason I prefer animation is the exaggerated expressions make it easier for me to follow. The fact all these studios are trying so hard to kill animation is noticed I will say that right now.

Personally, I actually liked the Cinderella live-action MORE than the animated. I felt like they took a more humanizing aspect to all the characters, while still keeping it family friendly. It didn’t feel so much like “good vs evil” as it felt like “good response to pain vs bad response”, which is something that I appreciate seeing.

Okay, so, first of all, i love to see you reacting to saberspark, i love his videos, lol. And secind of all, my opinion on live action disney: Alice in Wonderland was the best by far imo. It was a pretty solid direct sequel, and since Tim Burton directed it, we got Danny Elfman's soundtrack, phenomenal CG, and a gothic style and darker storyline. I genuinely adore everything about it. Its fun, its spooky, its goofy. I just, gah id gush about it forever. One of my top 3 favorite movies of all time.

With princess and the frog, the most beautiful era ended. I was so happy but so sad when it came out, cause I knew it would be the last one of its kind. It was nostalgic, yet inclusive and refreshing.

At first I was excited about The Little Mermaid remake but now I’m really worried about it. I feel like hardly any of these live action remakes have been worth my time and money. Especially after seeing what they did with Pinocchio, I’m not optimistic.

Part of what helped Alice in Wonderland work was that it was a sequel, introducing familiar characters and settings, but with a new story. The other remakes are introducing the same story, but changing - "updating" - the characters, music, and settings. They've got it backwards.

What’s also sad and annoying for the audience is that when these remakes are truly bad the company won’t really see it because of the profit that is being made. People will go and see these movies to see if it’s bad or good. They will hate watch it which I just making more money for Disney and to them the profit equals approval. I say that because they have a pattern of turning off comments on their videos.

My favorite movie growing up was Mary Poppins. I feel bad for my poor parents that had to sit through that long movie that many times. When I got older, they made Saving Mr. Banks. That movie is basically about how Disney bought the rights to the Mary Poppins book and changed it to the point where the author completely hated the work. It painted Disney as the bad guy in the situation, actually. Being interested in creating films myself, I found the movie to be very interesting and I definitely recommend it to those interested in that story, but at the time it felt like an apology from the company to the author of this book. When they made the new Mary Poppins, I got upset. Though I can't speak for the quality of the movie, knowing that this universe has been expanded felt like a kick in the junk. Why make a movie saying that you completely changed someone's source material and mostly used the popularity of the book to sell tickets to something kinda like the book and that Disney did this woman wrong here and then go and make a new movie? These new movies can be entertaining, but not everything that is entertaining is art. Art is what can change people and bring them together. One of my screenwriting professors used to say something close to "Really bad movies and really good movies have one thing in common; you talk about them after you watch the movie. Mediocre movies won't even be discussed on the ride home from the theater." Drop some good film or show recommendations if you made it this far. It's hard to find them these days.

omg Raya has got to be the most forgettable Disney movie ever. idk who remembers the plot even because it feels like nothing happened. And the dragon is just awfully designed with Elsa's huge eyes. it's that bad tbh.

Regarding the very confusing crush on Disney's Robin Hood: may I introduce you to Kovu from the Lion King 2? Man was he popular with little girls back then, me included. And I'm by no means a furry. That being said, I actually love the Lion King sequel and for me, that movie is totally underrated. Same with Fox & Hound. Or even Aristocats. I just love the animal-centric movies. Always enjoyed them more than the Princess movies

What I would love to see is a LIve Action/3D movie about Madam Mim. She's the one of the few villains to actually survive the movie she was in (Despite dying in the book it was based on) and she is incredibly fun to watch. She Chews the scenery like a champ, and is an unapologetic villain through and through.

About the Maleficient movie - despite Angelina Jolie's performance, if live action remakes of older animated films were a trend going into the 80s and into the 90s... well, I remember another commenter from another video saying that Joan Collins would've been just right for the role, and I agree. Brittney, perhaps you should watch old videos of the soap opera "Dynasty" from the 1980s, and watch Joan Collins in her role as Alexis Carrington. She would've *slayed* the role of the Sleeping Beauty villain, and the movie would've brought in some major bank.

90's kids did indeed grow up with all the originals so I get the nostalgia is there for sure.

3:40 Yess, i was (and honestly am) obsessed with atlantis the lost empire. It shaped me as a person. Also this is not disney but The road to eldorado was also a very important part of my childhood. My personality actually ended up being basically a mix of milo from atlantis and miguel from eldorado.

At this point, Disney should try for a cinematic Once Upon a Time Universe and crossover these movies and characters together. They can easily create an original story based on the interaction and attributes of the characters alone.

It's sad since Disney Television Animation Studio is the opposite of this. That studio at least has a respect for animation and is still producing new shows and IPs that everybody could appreciate, like The Owl House, Amphibia, The Ghost and Molly McGee, Hamster and Gretel, etc. Their future projects look even promising. Like even if there is a reboot of an old show there, it's for like other reasons other than nostalgia, such as DuckTales or The Proud Family. I don't know how a minor division of Disney understands this more than the actual core Disney division.

So before I say what I wanna say I wanna clarify that I’m not trying to flex on anyone or make myself seem like I’m trying to be better than others or anything. I am so happy I don’t suffer from FOMO. Part of that is from just not being able to throw away money to watch any of these reboots but the other part is that I grew up with originals, I was a Disney kid and even a Disney XD kid. I’ve known, even as a teen, that these remakes and reboots weren’t worth my time or maybe they just never really interested me. I am the type of person that gets more nostalgic pay off from watching the originals so I don’t pay Disney for something I know isn’t gonna make me happy

One of the few good things to come out of the trash fire that is ‘Velma’ was finding this channel, in my opinion. You have great takes on media!
