"simply pointing at two mildly similar things and claiming plagiarism without any proper foundation is toxic and destructive and pointless. If people aren't allowed to have similar ideas within already restrictive environments, furthering the development of any mod ever would be impossible". Oh my god yes. This is such an important point for art creation in general honestly. Art and development and creation of certain things and media just does not happen in a vacuum with no outside influence or to the point where all ideas are 100% original, something that far too few people seem to comprehend. Excellent video, made some really great points

Honestly, this is why copyright is bs. The original length of 28 years was already far more than enough to benefit from your creation, while also letting others who grew up with that said creation to make your own interpretation. 50 years after you die is stupid.

@@scotterboi9 i agree with you so much, people always refute the 'copyright is bs' by saying 'oh but poor small time creators' but like, when does it ever help small ones? 99% its used by huge companies to screw fans, 14 was already more than enough, think of how many things lose their relevance in 10 years, but they keep expanding it because god forbid someone else can make profit off their IP - its not like it'd even kill big companies, brands get copied often, sometimes to near perfection, yet people still go for the brand ver i really wish copyright was reworked but theres 0 chance, not with huge companies (like disney) basically having rewritten the law to screw others - i mean protect their ip

On the topic of difficulty and "purely delivering a difficult experience", I'm not surprised that many hard fangames/mods, in their goal to be difficult/challenging, end up dropping the need for "accessibility", as you mentioned. I remember another fangame (not PvZ) with actually a really solid premise/concept with interesting attacks, it's just that there were way too many unfair patterns and in response to criticism of some of the attacks, the dev doubled down a lot, saying things like "just don't miss" or generally getting defensive. Balancing fairness over challenge should always be a priority, IMO. I mean, at the end of the day, I'm here to finish a game and have fun simultaneously, so.
@peamix1340

In my opinion, game design revolves around making your game fun to play. Now, there's a lot (and I mean a LOT) of factors to that, but I've always seen it as a given. Games are made to be enjoyed, and if they're not enjoyable, well then something's just not right. Difficulty when handled correctly is immensely enjoyable, but putting it as the sole primary factor doesn't work out in most cases.

This is a really solid video, and I absolutely agree with that fact that you can't just put in the PvZ1 formula into PvZ2 and expect it to work. I feel that the reason why the slower paced gameplay of the first game works is because of the fact that the adventure mode only consists of five worlds, all taking place in a suburban house environment and all only consisting of 10 levels. The worlds end at just the right moment and dont overstay their welcome, and the short amount of levels meant that they could introduce a new plant almost every level and a new zombie every odd numbered level. If you made PvZ1 like PvZ2 in design philosophy, the game would just feel way too short and underwhelming imo. The opposite is true too. PvZ2 has over 11 worlds, 17 if including the Chinese Version, all of which have wildly varying themes and 20-35 levels each. If PvZ2 had the same pacing as PvZ1 then it would just be an absolute slog to play, and it'd get stale very quickly. That's why I think the brainbusters and clear conditions are a thing, to add variety. I agree with accessibility too, while of course difficulty options are a choice, clever design is the best form of accessibility, and I think that PvZ1 is actually a good example of this. Middle-aged moms who never even play video games were able to enjoy the first game and finish it, but mastered veterans can also challenge themselves too with survival endless, and streamlining strategies. I first played PvZ1 as a kindergartener and I was still able to enjoy and finish the game, now 11 years later I'm still enjoying the game as a veteran and still finding ways to challenge myself and refine my strategies. It's so funny that these hard as balls mods advertise themselves as "PvZ2 but like PvZ1" yet are absolutely not as accessible as PvZ1 is. Really wish that one day we get a "Plants Vs. Zombies 2: Expanded" kind of mod, where it's not meant to be like PvZ1 but instead a perfection of PvZ2. Combines the International and Chinese versions of the game, rebalances them, and adds extra modes and difficulty options to have the game be accessible to all skills levels.

the thing that annoyed me the most in modern pvz2 is that popcap removed and changed stuff that I genuinely really liked and even loved such as the special music tracks, the old progression system with the world keys, the old world order based on the times of the worlds release rather than difficulty and that many levels got nerfed even tho they were beatable without using any powerups and back when ancient egypt was more of a fun world rather than a literal tutorial world even tho there already is one. and its much different without these, hence why I mostly tend to play on the 5.0.1 Patch of the game if I want a more challenging experience and to complete it and with it unlocking the now Premium plant that is gold bloom. I do play on modern Pvz2 but I play it along side with a mod that Re-adds the special music tracks and old world order back since for me its quite bland without the demonistration minigame and ultimate battle themes playing once in a while.

14:15 I so agree with this one. This is essentially fake difficulty. They're as hard as why smashing your head against a cinderblock for whatever the abritrary goal is is hard. It's actually very easy to do, it's just hard to accomplish. Many mods are more focused in kicking our butts for not playing the way it intends us to do rather than giving us space to experiment and actually play. It becomes less of a game and more of a chore. If being hard is what makes a great game, then Bubsy 3D or Drake of the 99 Dragons would be masterpieces by now.

The whole idea of "plagerism" of ideas gets even more ridiculous when you look at the concepts of existing Zombies and realize they all have so many similarities BUT can still be unique with different contexts and different twists. "Zombie that stays towards the back and disables your plants from afar" can apply to Wizard Zombie and Octo Zombie, but it can ALSO apply to Catapult Zombie from PVZ1 "Zombie that has higher defence but moves faster when you break their defence" applies to Newspaper Zombie, Pharoh Zombie, and to a lesser extent, Chicken Zombie and Weasel Zombie who release faster enemies instead of becoming faster themselves "Speedy Zombie that blocks projectiles coming from the front, instantly disables your defences when he reaches it, and is vulnerable to lobbed shots" I didn't say his name but he popped into your mind didn't he? Carpenter Zombie correct!! ..or Excavator Zombie too sure Point is, so so SO many zombies from PVZ1 and 2 share the same niches in different ways, and even you pointed out the major differences between Swashbuckler and Relic Hunter, despite being almost identical in every other way, the CONTEXT completely changes them and makes them unique. Barring people from using similar mechanics is so so ridiculous it makes me wonder if these people realize what game they're playing.

My major issue about the microtransactions is not even the microtransactions themselves but instead the plants that are premium being strong and plant bloating, in pvz1 while some plants was useful in general (for example smash) a lot of the plants was made with the idea of being useful against specific zombies, and the reason i don't like the premium plants is because they entire remove that idea, for example the new gatling pea or snow dragon are good examples of it, i remember having issues with a specific world and after getting them even with those plants on level 1 i was still doing way more good than before, and yeah i could choose not to use them but the fact someone can just have a easy time because they got 2 or even 1 of those plants really make me angry to a certain point. In terms of plant bloating pvz2 has a lot of unnecessary plants, i understand having some premium plants to get some money of the game but there's literally more than 40 premium plants and they're still being added to this day, and while i don't like busted premium plants like i said before some premium plants are so garbage or so weak that you wonder why they're even in the game besides giving popcap and ea money. I don't mind having accessibility options for players that are bad in specific levels but i do feel like the players and plant foods is way too much in my opinion, personally for me i would prefer to just have the lawn mowers or at least the lawn mowers and plant food, a issue i have with powers besides the accessibility stuff is how it don't really make sense in terms of the context of the world/design of the game yeah plant food make sense since it's at least plant related and it existed on the original game to plants grow, but why we can shoot snowballs, use electric magic, or flip flop the zombies i understand this is more just a gameplay mechanic with no lore behind but as someone that like games lore it do bother me a bit. I don't like the level up system entirely it's way better than how it was when it got introduced, but i feel like it remove the charm of pvz, making a good strategy with plants and changing it around depending on the type of zombies, while it's hard now days to level up specific plants without paying money it's still possible and 100% possible with people that do spend money and i don't really like that. I don't know if that's just me but even with the level gimmicks i do personally prefer how the first game handled levels, i feel like pvz2 worlds are way too long i did played pvz2 but i stopped playing the game because i was getting bored after awhile i wanted to see new zombies, i wanted to see new gimmicks, but the worlds was so long that it took awhile for that stuff to happen, that's just my personal opinion though and i can see the advantages of the level system pvz2 uses and i respect it even if i'm not a fan of it. I don't like how they removed minigames and side stuff you could do, and i'm not a fan of the boost system entirely, i loved playing minigames and trying to find alternative strategies to them especially if i got bored of playing the normal story mode and while pvz2 do have some extra stuff, i wouldn't say it feel the same as the first game. I personally agree entirely with you on the plagiarism thing especially for mod limitations, for example a lot of pvz1 mods make fume shroom have infinite range but that's because of mod limitations the first game has and not a lot of people can overcome that or know how, overall this was a interesting video but at least for me i feel a lot of people dislike or hate pvz2 for way more stuff than just microtransactions, after playing the game i didn't hate or anything but i do feel like it's lacking something, and of course there's also the stuff i mentioned. In terms of mods i'm surprised you didn't touch on the subject of hard mods, a lot of mods are super hard and say they're better because they're hard when that's not the entirely point, for example i'm someone that is very a vanilla player i don't really like playing super hard mods especially after trying some of them (like brutal mode for pvz1 for example) so hearing people say that is very annoying to me, is why i like mods like alterz for example. Overall a very interesting video.

In my opinion the problem with PvZ 2 Modding isn't a lot about the question of people trying to remove PvZ2's Features if it wasn't because of the fact that people always try to make a recreation of Pvz 2 but "better". Like you said on the video, people can't edit codes or add new ones because of how locked and secure is the code inside the OBB of the game (that it's kinda surprising how anyone still didn't do it because PvZ 2's engine is the same as PvZ 1 one, making the possibility of decompiling the game), people could add new plants or zombies based on these values and make a whole new thing, but it's always a mod trying to be "better" than pvz 2 or just a recreation of the game itself or just a port of chinese content to international, I have never seen someone making a new whole PvZ Experience or even Game inside of PvZ 2's Base Code and make a mod that isn't even about PvZ 2 itself, THAT'S the real problem with PvZ 2 Modding in my opinion. I am the Code Leader of a PvZ Fangame, and I trust in my Leader and Co-leader that we will can do a 100% original experience for the players that anyone has ever seen while showing thing that the other pvz games did, but not better to be like "Haha, we are better than PopCap!".

The main thing is that if you want to make an entirely new experience, then there's no point tethering it to an existing game. People make mods because it's easier to add to an existing framework than making an entirely new thing. If you're gonna be making an entire new framework anyway, why not just start from scratch? Plus, by making your own game there's the possibility of eventually selling it and getting something for your hard work that mods just don't have access to.
@scotterboi9
@scotterboi9 2 жыл бұрын
This is actually a pretty valid argument! As long as you remove every instance of pvz2, and replace it with game! If you wanted to make everything original, than there's no point. The whole point of modding is to make something using the original game's framework, and then remake it in your own style. That includes level design, and elements that you might want to throw out. And modding isn't creating a new game. It's just adding your elements and your ideas to an existing one. I could replace the sound effect of planting a plant with a fart sound, and that's a mod. And besides, new levels are original content. Saying that it isn't is just wrong.

Pre-leveling PvZ2 player that quit before the leveling update. I still would've preferred a paid PvZ2, the potential of designing without the incentives of microtransaction-driven content is still there. (Not to mention a PC release) Never paid for anything although it pained me to not have some of the OG plants, and while I didn't mind grinding for stuff like the Gemium plants at first (Ghost Pepper was one of the best things for the travesty that was Big Wave Beach imo), the gameplay loop of "grind, event, occasional look up for a hard level" gradually got weary and despite its existing pros like being able to freely switch between worlds or more varying conditions for levels, it stopped feeling like a game and more of an "obligation" by the time I left. The bad apples in PvZ2's levels just build up on your stress, and taking a break = missing out. While I've enjoyed other mobile games with similar "Play Every Day" incentives, PvZ2 held itself back trying this out. PvZ1 on the other hand, despite its commonly stated flaws of being too easy, and other nitpicking elements like super niche plants or the mediocre Adventure Replay, I still come back to it from time to time, or watch other people play through it. That said, I do feel that PvZ2 modding doesn't understand what it really wants when it comes to "designing around PvZ1", and yet trying to do what PvZ2 intended with bigger challenges without noting how PvZ1's design has entirely different intentions to its sequel. The result is getting stuck between "difficult because we have mobile-game safety nets" and "difficult because taunting bad players is funny". Really, I'm just satisfied with the P2P PvZ2 that could have been in terms of mods, given that the vanilla PvZ2 had that potential to be better but squandered it, instead of being an irredeemable disaster. Honestly the "can beat without needing to pay for stuff or rely on premiums" argument is dull and is like expecting praise for BASIC DECENCY. PvZ2 imo isn't harmed just for having microtransactions, but for letting them and other modern mobile game elements encroach too much on the overall experience. I wish you good luck on your mod development.

"EA ruined PvZ 2 with microtransactions." The points you make here is so much better then pointing at EA for the downfall of PvZ, which isn't true, even though I did fall under this mindset for a while.

This video was very helpful to actually figure out the articulation of my opinions on the pvz2 mods I've been playing. I think the worse part is the team, especially on their discord server. They apparently have literal children as their admins and find it perfectly acceptable and even funny to allow them to ban random people for a laugh. No quality control at all. Like they don't even care about the people who actively want to play the mod. As for actual gameplay: They're all just trying to be pvz1 but "better" and "harder." They don't use the advantages of pvz2s design to make a fun casual experience, it's either easy mode where the game is so incredibly easy that there is literally zero challenge or the normal mode where I swear they introduce mechanics that make literally no sense and never explain them expecting people to just randomly understand. One of the secret levels in frostbite caves was snowfall which froze zombies and chilled them and I thought the gimmick was to use non-fire projectile plants to not thaw them out early so they would be slow for longer and there'd be more time to kill them. The actual answer was to use Sweet Potato on the frozen zombies within the 0.5 seconds they are frozen. ????????????????????????? Who would ever think to do that? While the tiering system is cool and all but in some cases I realized I got my plants stuck at tier 2 and didn't have enough to get to tier 3 and it would take a lot of grinding in order to get them back to tier 1 where I actually can use them. Basically I couldn't make progress until I fixed the mistake by taking a long time building the money back up because I spent it wanting to get done with a different extremely annoying stage I couldn't progress past. It's constant dead stops, it's not like other games where I can take a little bit of abuse and come through with a lower score then go back to it to improve and get better rewards it's very binary for Eclise. The original Angry Birds did that correctly. PvZ2 by itself did that correctly because I could move to a different world to collect a useful plant and come back to that stage with a new strategy, if I got stuck in Eclise I was forced to keep trying it until somehow it magically works after throwing literally everything at the wall. Usually that actually took more attempts, trying to switch up the strategy. It would be better just to brute force it until it finally works.

This video has definitely been an eye opener for how I'm planning it out and I can't thank you enough. I was originally going to go wholly into pvz1's style but taking a step back and looking at pvz1 and 2 I saw how much potential I was missing by ignoring the second. (and maybe pvz3, rest in... confusion?) None the less I am still new to modding pvz as a whole, but the pvz2 modding community resources are a huge help. Might be a bit of an unpopular opinion, but I think leveling could've been okay if the game (or at least some parts of it) were designed with it in mind. Like let's say the main adventure is untouched by leveling, and you have some minigames/survival/other modes that are also untouched. But then let's say there's another section of the game where everything is turned up to 11 and you can upgrade plants, unlock/equip perks, have plant mastery levels, etc. There could be hardcore challenges, extreme endless zones, zombies gain extra abilities, stuff like that where you're meant to grow in power to match the difficulty (or improve your skill even more) but without it affecting the entire game, it's just its own self contained experience basically. This way progression/power junkies like me can still get their fix, and have something that feels meaningful to keep working toward, but the core game is unaffected I think the big reasons why people didn't like it are because it affects the entire game, you couldn't go back/reverse it, it's tied to microtransactions with a progression bottleneck, and because the increase in power you get is in no way justified for the challenge you face in the normal game. Like one single leveled up plant is basically the terminator on steroids. Even with the previous thing I mentioned they could tone it down a few notches And before anyone asks, yeah I've played Grind Thousand (that's a pvz2 mod if you didn't know). If you know of any mods that are basically vanilla but a more friendly progression system (zombies drop gems, drop more money in general, no microtransactions, no bottleneck on resources) and maybe have a bit more challenge, let me know. Or literally just vanilla but zombies drop gems, I'll take it

What pisses me off the most about modern pvz2 is seed packets, its literally the same thing as EA Star Wars Battlefront 2. You open lootboxes to gain access to a card then gain copies of said card to level it up to make it stronger, took a very long time to grind out and you were limited on how much you can earn in an amount of time . That was completely shat on by its community and EA reworked it. If Pvz2 wasn't a free to play game, it would've most likely would've received the same treatment. I wouldn't have minded leveling if it were a proper xp system and zombies got stronger in levels

Honestly, my opinion regarding PvZ 2 has always been that Popcap ruined the game by making it a mobile game. The microtransactions were irrelevant, my issue with it was always that someone decided to make the sequel a mobile game. Even if there hadn't been a single microtransaction, that still would've ruined it for me. The original PvZ sold amazingly well and was originally a PC game, before its success led it to branching out to console and mobiles. They should've done the same thing with the sequel.
@peamix1340
@peamix1340 Жыл бұрын
I'm curious, what about it being on mobile ruined it for you?
@VioletAeonSnowfield
@VioletAeonSnowfield Жыл бұрын
@@peamix1340 The biggest issue is the simple fact that I have fairly large hands. I don't own an iPad or any other type of digital pad, so the only device I could play the game on was a phone; and even the phone I have now still isn't large enough for me to comfortably play any mobile game (not that I ever really want to) the phone I had when PvZ2 initially launched was even smaller. Getting a larger phone wasn't and still isn't an investment I'm willing to make so I can play any mobile game; especially when I already have actual gaming platforms that I needed to invest money into - such as my actual PC. While emulators are fairly easy to find and popular now, I have no idea if that was the case when the game launched; and even if they were - the game's performance on an emulator is just so limited. Which is to be expected, an entirely separate operating system has to be emulated just to launch the game. Another issue I had with it is the point I already made, the original game was a PC game. I never played any of the mobile ports and never had any interest in it, the idea that the sequel would release as a mobile exclusive never even entered my mind as possibility until they announced it was on mobile and then made it clear that they had no plans to ever port it over to the platform that literally laid the foundations for the entire franchise. I'm not a big fan of most mobile games, as a matter of fact I generally dislike them. There has never been a point in my mind in which I've seen a game be designed for a mobile device and thought "This is the best possible iteration of this game. - making it a mobile game was the right decision." but there are still plenty of games which are designed with the mobile experience in mind and feel at the very least satisfying as a result of this fact. PvZ Heroes does this, in fact. But PvZ2 does not. Because the core basis of the game, the foundation that everything else relies upon was NOT created for a mobile device. How could it have been when that foundation was created by the original game which was a PC first experience. And while I don't want to touch on the microtransactions as I genuinely meant it when I said I would've still disliked the game's mobile focus even without those - I do feel like its necessary to bring up the fact that the fact that several plants from the first game were microtransactions. I'm largely indifferent to all of the new plants that were added post-launch costing real money, after all they were new plants. It doesn't feel like I'm losing anything in not having access to them right out of the gate. But having so many of the plants from the first game locked behind either just a straight up purchase or a gem purchase felt like a slap to the face. A large part of the reason for my initial interest and excitement for PvZ2 was based on my experience from the first game, so to have so much of that experience just not be there was...disheartening. And that's without even touching on the fact that so much of PvZ1's side content was just completely abandoned for the sequel, further compacting that disappointment. No matter how inconsequential or simple those minigames were, they were absolutely brilliant and it was fun to be able to play around with them.

the argument "if pvz2 was the one that introduced lawnmowers, people would hate it like plant food and power ups" is quite silly. people don't hate plant food, powerups (also boosted plants from plant selection screen); because they "give you another chance"/"technically give you a way to break a level", but because they DO break the levels and every aspect of plants vs zombies due to the fact that you can buy them with gold and gems. The systems themselves aren't necessarily problematic on their own if implemented correctly, they're just tied to bs "pay to win" aspects which makes the whole game pointless
@peamix1340

I agree, that point in particular doesn't really hold up and I should've made a better example to support my point. @@LotsOfSpaghettiBoy Pay to win means that you pretty need microtransactions to beat it. I didn't start getting premium plants until after I had beaten the game. Also the leveling system being bad can be attributed to the fact that the adventure mode was not made to accommodate such, plus being a gacha system adds a bad taste in my mouth. PvZ2 China arguably has a similar problem though the former point isn't as severe as the international version. A leveling system can actually be decent if the adventure mode is made to accommodate it, it's not gacha based, and you can revert to lower levels at any time if you want a challenge.

I personally dislike the grind heavy “oooh keep winning that battlez mode every single day so you can get the new plant at 500 points” aspect of the game, makes me feel stressed, I go through so much to unlock a new plant and then when I finally go to use it and have fun on let’s say survival egypt mode they’ve already popped out a new one I gotta go get, and then if you don’t play the game for even just a day you’re already behind, they should make new plants unlocked by either seed packets or battlez purchase-able in the shop for like 200 gems or something, I just don’t want to keep playing battlez over and over all the time. It burns me out but then if I do stop playing I’m pretty much saying “no I don’t want new plants” because all the premium piñatas in the game rarely ever give out seed packets for those plants, just the ones behind paywalls

Thé pixel effect you use is a strain on the eyes. Could you use a different effect?

It's funny, though, when premium plants have been power crept by plants that have since been obtainable for free. For instance, Snap Pea is arguably a straight upgrade to Chomper and is unlocked with seeds.
