I had to get away from original hardware due to increasing prices mostly, but honestly it shouldn't matter how you play the games, just have fun. Personally, I've gone the mini console route for the most part, I really enjoy the Sega and Nintendo classic minis especially.

Hi there, as for me sometimes I use original hardware, some other times I use modded hardware, emulation or my trustworthy, jailbroken nes mini, as long as I can play the games I love, feel nostalgic about or want to share with my loved ones I don't really care about how I play. I watch videogame content to share with others and listen about their gaming related stories. Happy gaming everyone

I think people can enjoy the old games whatever way works for them. I've sent my digital copies to friends with emulators. They don't have the systems like I do but like the simplicity of the old games and enjoy them. I like having the collection of old systems too. They can be a conversation piece in themselves. I also think the new compact 20k game systems that just plug into your TV are great for those that don't want a room full of old consoles. If I didn't have what I do I'd buy one of those. There's no shame in it.

I am in my early 60's and I didn't have these consoles growing up. We couldn't afford it. I have learnt so much of what I know about retrogaming from channels like yours. I am happy that I recently gave one of my retrogaming handhelds to my daughter's friend and he is using it. Sadly, it seems like whatever interest I follow, I see gatekeepers saying, "you can't do that!" or "that's wrong". I don't care about me, I'm way past that. It's the people without decades of thick skin that suffer.

@@MoviesGamesMusic Our first games console was a 10 in 1 pong clone (circa 1976, the year I turned 15). I also played on the apple II+ (circa 77), the Exidy Sorcerer (Circa 79), the Texas Instruments Ti99a (Circa 1980). The point I was trying to make was that, over the years, I have been involved in many different activities (amateur radio, amateur theatre, car rallying etc...) and in every group there were gatekeepers who would challenge newcomers with "That's wrong", You can't do that" and I watched them drive people away. They were the old timers who felt they had the one true way to do things. Things changed over time, but slowly. Where was the typo?

Seeing 20 to 30-somethings playing and reviewing games that I enjoyed as a child warms my heart. When I played NES or SNES games, or other systems of that generation, that technology was state-of-the-art. Today, with so many superior options, younger players can review these games more objectively than I ever could have. This rule doesn't apply to games I missed back then. I can judge them quite honestly, though I still appreciate a younger set of eyes.

Right? It's nice to see what someone decades later with all they have available to them thinks about the things I grew up with and love. Getting a new perspective that I could NEVER ever have. If anything it actually makes me kinda jealous of them honestly, I'll never be able to know what it's like to play all these games "new" from a 2020s perspective....

I feel like I'm the opposite of a gatekeeper. If someone of a younger generation is getting interested in something I know a lot about I love gushing out answers to anything they may have questions on and if it's something physical, I tend to give things away to stoke the fire of interest. I'll give them an extra copy of a game or a hard to get a hold of cable or anything else to help them along on this new journey they are on. Part of the fun in gaming for me is seeing other people have fun too. And if they've some nugget of knowledge on the subject I've never heard before it's a bonus for me, not a badge of dishonor lol

I still remember the day I braught my C64 home. I still remember the day I played my original playstation. I still remember the day I introduced it to my oldest son and he looked at it as I did with the same eyes. What makes retro gaming timeless is the feeling it brings and that does not skip a generation. People should be proud that this legacy still lingers on, that in these times of modern AAA high polygon counts and hardware that is a 1000x as powerful as what we used to use, people still find the need to sit back, reflect on and play these games. It makes retro gaming an eternal live an eternal life, a story that still will be told long after we will be gone.

Glad I waited until the end to comment because you brought up so many points I was going to echo to you. First, glad to know you enjoyed RGT's video... going by the title I was wondering if you had. I personally LOVE when someone like yourself or Scott the Woz talks about 8-bit games and systems or even Genesis/Megadrive titles. Sometimes I wanna hear the same information (yes, even about Doki Doki Panic) over and over and over again from different people because I not only love the topic but the style of presentation... In your specific cases, your humor and shared love for the topic. When I see well researched posts from "My Life in Gaming" or "Hard4Games" or "The Gaming Historian"... I really got prepare myself to be intent and follow this whole drawn out drama. I subscribe to them but I can't watch videos like that every day! Your channel, Scott, a few of those TripleJump videos are well researched, I learn something, I hear the same points but from different sources (ie, did Atari see Donkey Kong playing on The Adam? Or on ColecoVision? Or was that just rumor and not fact?! Was or wasn't Atari really going to sell Nintendos or did they just want to delay things??)... I can listen all day to different topics.. you're all entertaining! Lastly, I said this on RGT's video: imagine you playing a Beatles CD or Spotify list for your kids and some random oldhead telling you they should be listening to the Mono recordings on original vinyl or over an AM radio! Utterly ridiculous.

I like to think of my self as a historian and preservationist and the aim I see is 1st keep the spirit alive keep these games and consoles relevant and meaningful and in the end if all there is a nintendo mini online emulation so be it even if it keeps the conversations going.

Thanks for your video. You made excellent points in it. I don't think that many reasonable people can understand the sheer negative strength of these individuals who, for some reason, see it as their job to gatekeep. Naturally, other cultural forms have their own gatekeepers but, they often do so without the toxicity towards other people. I'm a man, I'm 58 years old and only got into gaming when i was 27. I strongly believe that our hobby only benefits from being accepting and inclusive towards anyone who shows an interest in it. I'm glad you have voiced views that surely the majority of us share. Thank you again!

Very well said! One thing I have enjoyed is sharing my love of retro gaming with my kids, and it boggles my mind that anyone would take issue with the fact that we use emulators and a modern TV. Hearing my 7yo say that she loves playing Crazy Taxi with me is far better to me than the "authenticity" of getting a CRT TV and a working Dreamcast to replace my broken one.

You're 100 percent correct. Just because there's hundreds of videos about Final Fantasy 6 out there, doesn't mean I would mind hundreds more about it from different personalities. I love seeing people's takes on it, whatever it is.

You know, part of what I like about your videos is that when you talk about stuff I know, my Asperger makes me feel at home bt being reminded of all this cool part of history. It's like watching your favourite film -- You know each line of dialogue, but you still love it. Also, it's not what you speak, but how do you speak -- I love your humour, your research and your hardworking efforts to share the history of this beautiful hobby. Not to mention, more often that not, I stil learn a couple of things here and there and I appreciate your content for that. I guess I'm not hardcore enough for the gatekeepers lol. Gatekeeping is kind of paradoxical. First they will tell you that only what they like is good and that only if you like the same stuff as they you have value. But then when you try to take their word and get into their likes, they will not allow you, because, as you put it, you were not there and therefore you're not a "real fan". Thus, it makes no sense. On the other side, and please don't shit on me... You know, I have to admit there was ONE time I was a gatekeeper myself. Back when Pokémon first came out in the west I was already a fan because of the anime, and by 1998 when the games came out, since I was already in middle school I was bullied for liking a kiddy game. And by bullied I mean I was beat up by other kids at school and some hard stuff that to this day still impacts my self steem. Then when Pokémon Go came out and it became cool among adults, I witnessed those very same bullies being addicted to PoGo, and I was like "What?! You bullied me back in the day for liking Pokémon! You made fun of me, humilliated me, stole my lunch so many times just because I liked Pokémon, and now all of a sudden you claim to be a big fan? You're a hypocrite. You DON'T DESERVE to call yourself a Pokémon fan!". I still feel uncomfortable from time to time, but I'm coming to terms with that under the idea that they grew up and learned to cherish that kiddy franchise free of prejudice. Although I never gatekept against new fans. I've always welcomed Pokéfans who joined the community through Go and I don't care if they were not even born when "the original 151" was the deal and whatnot. End of rant.

You are 100% correct Look original hardware is great, and I would love to own a lot more, but its so expensive, so instead I try to concentrate on replica controllers, cause that goes a long way to replicating the feel, and at the end of the day, its the software that counts!

Gatekeepers, Gamergate, Girls in tabletoprpgs.... the history over and over again just because a few think they could decide what is ok or not. I'm a dude, almost in my 50's so I live throug lot of the "retro" ages, and I can assure people like you are making great for gamer community.. Your videos are awesome and full of info, info that a lot of people apreciate. Don't matter if you are from an age A or a gender B.... There is no place for exlusion or bigotry in any kind of hobby, the only thing that matters is had fun, discuss/talk with everyone and play. I keep a few of my old consoles, and I could use emulators or retro consoles cause the price of some games at 2023 is really skyhigh. And I could appreciate the same a game. Let's hope that that kinda people slowly will dissappear because they are the kinda people that made the world toxic.

Great points! I started watching RGT85's vid when it came out, but didn't get past the intro. Felt like it was about politics of a community that I"m not really part of, so I moved on. Thank you for synopsizing what it was about and adding your take. Though they're different issues altogether, I feel like this is a good follow-on to your vid defending the use of emulators. Thanks again!

Thank you for calling this out. I’ve seen this kind of behavior in other communities too (I’ve collected vinyl records for over a decade and the audiophile space has the same kind of gatekeepy attitude - don’t you dare use the wrong gear, but also don’t buy high-quality gear because casual people like you are inflating the prices, etc.) and it feels like there’s no winning with these folks besides not participating in the community at all. It’s so counterproductive. If we want the legacy of classic games or any other media to live on, we need to make efforts to welcome new people into the fold. I’ve learned a ton of new things from your channel and also appreciated hearing fresh retellings of stories that were already on my radar. Keep doing what you do 💪

I love this video so much. You hit the nail on the head with regard to all the toxicity and gatekeeping! Personally, I’m 37 and grew up with or was at least exposed to most of the stuff you talk about….but… I certainly never knew much more than the superficial facts/details. You do an excellent job telling the STORY and giving details that I never knew! Keep up the good work and cheers to you standing up to bullies and jerks!!

Hi Lady decade, 👋 thank you for you video, I agree with what you said. I'm a retro/vintage enthusiast and as a 2nd hobby a ham radio operator. Where we have the same problems, multiple by 5 since we have to stick to certain laws, which can sometimes be outdated. Hopefully the future retro community doesn't have the same problem a ham radio , where the people think of an old man in his 70s sitting in front of old desk being boring.

And regarding retro gaming, I play play retro game on emulators, mainly because I do not want to spend a fortune buying old consoles and games, plus I do not care about the retro look on old TVs I actually prefer the smooth HD look on newer monitors.

I was about to say that I would have called them out but then again... I don't actually hang out in that many retro spaces. I mostly just do my own thing, exploring the landscape at my own pace. I seem to recall this attitude being prevalent when I was more active in this space. Maybe that's why I stopped?
