I've used ford motorcraft 5w20 synthetic blend in my dodge caliber (bought new in 07) sence my first oil change i now have 322000 miles. I change my oil every 4000 miles. I have never had to add oil between changes. I burn a little over 1/2 quart in 4000 mile. I use motorcraft in all my cars

I abandoned Amsoils extended oil change interval claim after sending a sample to blackstone labs where they notified me that the oil should have been changed a 4k and not 10k. The TBN had dropped like a rock.
@Best-Synthetic-Oilscom
@Best-Synthetic-Oilscom 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the note. AMSOIL uses an additive package that performs differently than most other oils regarding TBN. Like most oils, you will usually notice a rapid decline of the TBN during the first phase of the oil life. But then the TBN stabilizes and holds above the condemnation level out to, and usually well beyond, the advertised mileage interval. As long as the TBN is above about 1.0, AND you are not getting other problem indicators, like viscosity thickening and/or an increase in wear metals, the oil is still good and you are ok. So it is not as simple as just reading the TBN to determine the condition of an extended drain oil like AMSOIL. If you have further questions, please contact Allen Bender at AMSOIL. He can be reached at (715) 392-7101.

I understand. My point is that just because your TBN drops to a low number (as long as it is above 1.0), it doesn't mean you need to change oil. You need to look at the oil's viscosity and wear metals to determine if a service is required. Blackstone and Polaris have TBN warning thresholds that indicate a service required whenever the TBN drops below 50% of the starting TBN. While very safe, that is wasting the capability of the oil to run for extended intervals. You can't just look at TBN - you have to look at several data points together.

This is clearly in favour of Amsoil. That being said, it is a good oil, albeit expensive. I have used synthetic blend and regular good quality oils in my vehicles over the years. I do my oil changes on a regular basis. I have 450,000 miles on my '82 F150; 410,000 miles on my '84 Crown Vic; 420,000 miles on my '93 Doge truck; 210,000 miles on my '96 Crown Vic at this point. None of the engines in any of my vehicles consume any more oil than they did from day one. My philosophy, is to use oils with the approved seal on the container and the appropriate classification for that engine.

After 13 years I just took the valve covers off my 2009 Ford 5.4 L for the first time ever. It had run Motorcraft semi synthetic for the first 8 years of its life followed by various other semi and full synthetics changed regularly since then. I could not believe it as the top of the engine looks like new, there was zero sludge, buildup or discolouration on the valve covers or various engine parts which are all still shiny silver and show zero wear. I had no idea an engine of that age could look that good after so many years just from proper maintenance so I’d say don’t stress to much about semi versus full synthetics, just keep it changed and run a quality brand.

I have been running amsoil in all my vehicles for more than a decade. Both gas and diesel. I change it by the hour meter, not the odometer. Every 100 hours. This works out to between 3300 - 3900 miles. I know the oil hasn’t broken down in that time. But I also want it to always be clean. At 150,000 miles, you look inside the valve cover and even a Diesel engine is so clean, it looks like it was just assembled and hasn’t even run yet. That gives me enough piece of mind it is worth the extra expense. Just my $.02

I make my own synthetic blend. I use half Mobil 1 full synthetic and half standard grade Mobil oil. It works great in my Volvo. Mixing some synthetic does help. It reduces oil consumption. Synthetic oils designed for longer oil change intervals have more detergents and acid buffers. The synthetic oils also cling better to friction surfaces and reduce heating. My car gained almost 8% better fuel economy.

+John Ferguson While I applaud you on discovering the benefits of synthetic lubricants, and the first-hand experience you have gained, I have to ask - why are you still using any conventional oil in your vehicles? The cost difference isn't significant on an automobile, and if you take advantage of even a portion of the extended change interval available, you will recover all of your additional expense.

I tried using full synthetic in an Audi V6 engine with 72,000 mi. After just 4,000 mi it started leaking at the valve cover gaskets and the camshaft tensioner seals and the upper oil reservoir gasket. The seals that were not part of the oil system not under pressure. The only thing sealing these areas was the sludge and carbon residue. The full synthetic oil had desolved it because it had more detergent. My Volvo is 17 years old and ran for 12 years on standard high grade oil changed every 5,000 mi or 6 months. I'm afraid that it will start leaking. But, the synthetic blend does keep the engine running cooler, increases fuel economy, and reduces oil consumption by at least half. My mechanic removed the valve covers and we discovered that there was almost no build up of deposits. Blockage of the oil drainage ports is a major cause of engine failure in Volvo inline 6 cylinder engines.
@Best-Synthetic-Oilscom
@Best-Synthetic-Oilscom 8 жыл бұрын
John Ferguson You have discovered the one disadvantage of synthetic lubricants - they clean too well sometimes. But if the Volvo doesn't have any leaks after running your syn-blend, it probably isn't going to have any. I'd be tempted to gradually increase the ratio of synthetic-to-conventional oil over the next several oil changes. That should give the seals a chance to adapt to the new conditions (and swell back to normal size) as any dirt/sludge is removed. Maybe use a high-mileage oil as the conventional part of the blend. They have conditioners added to swell seals.

@johnferguson7235 8 жыл бұрын
HighConsciousness1 I tried switching a 7 year old Audi A4 V6 to full synthetic and the valve cover gaskets and the camshaft tensioner seals and the oil level sensors started to leak. In older engines, crud and sludge is frequently keeping the engine's unpressurized oil seals from leaking. Full synthetics have additional detergents and seal conditioning chemicals that can cause leaks. Syn blends don't seem to trigger these problems. My Volvo is now 17 years old and doesn't leak oil. I don't want to risk that.

I was a mechanic for over 35 years I tore down and rebuilt many many motors I used conventional valvoline my own and never had a sludge problem at all and ran the engines hard and above redline from time to time. Engines that had penzoil in them consistently were the ones when tore down you needed a puddy knife to start cleaning the oil galley. None of my personal engines ever had sludge and these motors were mostly old v8 from 327 up to 455 they lasted better than the new cars that have a check engine light that is constantly on from some Chinese sensor that went out causing the engine to flood and r7n like crap. This is my 2 cents lol.😊

You've taken a couple of steps more than most people in learning about oil. I invite you to continue your education and learn about the differences between oils blended with Group III Hydro-cracked base oil, and those blended with Group IV & V synthetic base oils. I've found that Synthetic Blend Oils are really good for one thing...for transitioning your Cars Engine from Conventional Dino over to 100% Synthetic. Gives the time for gaskets and seals to adjust to more synthetic properties before you switch over to fully Synthetic Oil. I transitioned my 2010 Toyota Corolla over to Synthetic from Convention by using a high-quality 5W20 Synthetic Blend Oil, then I went over to a Full Synthetic 5W20...and eventually a 0W20 Synthetic. No Issues, No Leaks, No Problems to speak of. That's been my experience anyways. Great Fuel Economy!

Big diesel engines routinely run over 1,000000 miles on conventional 15W40 oils before needing to be rebuilt. Many well designed gasoline engines will run 250,000 on conventional motor oil, using good preventative maintenance. I've ran used oil analysis on my Detroit Series 60 motor, using 15W40 conventional oil and also with 10W30 semi-synthetic oil. The semi-synthetic oil allows for a longer drain interval, with minimal added cost. I now use a semi-synthetic 15W40 for the majority of the year, and 10W30 semi-synthetic for the Winter months. In my opinion and experience, semi-synthetic motor oils offer very good performance. For my operation, using a full synthetic in my semi truck is an unnecessary added expense. And I think the differences in engine wear between a quality conventional, or semi-synthetic, and a full synthetic oil is negligible at best.

Thanks for your comments. I would offer to you that current trends are rapidly moving towards lower viscosity engine oils (10W-30 and lower) and full synthetics that offer increased protection, better fuel economy, and lower cost-per-mile when run to their full extended-drain interval limits. These trends are validated with oil analysis and engine tear-downs that prove the results.

The slides stay wet for months. But my car started and ran quieter on QS Syn than it did on Amsoil. Ive used Valvoline, QS, Pennzoil, M1, Kendall, Castrol, Shell, Havoline, Amsoil, Royal Purple on dozens of cars since 1978 and have only had a problem with graphite oil back in the early 80's. I once thought synthetic oils I bought was most beneficial in my application until I started to understand the business side of selling oils. Mostly everything dealing with day-to-day use products that businesses sale take with a grain of salt if they have strong marketing ploys for their product since they can ultimately leave you with a false impression like I once had. It is ultimately up to us to change our oil more frequently if we are to receive the benefits of maintaining our engines and etc holding onto the value of the items we enjoy to use. If your application calls for synthetic oil you buy truly tested higher graded oils from educating yourself on the industry. If you just commute day-to-day and want to keep your vehicle for a "lifetime" use your budget based oils but change them often or it will eventually smudge up and upset you prematurely. If you like performance engines understand the budget required to upkeep your investment or weekend toy or luxury commute it will keep you a lot more satisfied with your options.

Based on what I've learned from years of personal and professional experience, along with hundreds (maybe thousands) of hours of research and study is this: If you are on a tight budget, then save up and buy the best oil and oil filters available. These top-quality products will provide several benefits for you: (1) they will protect your engine better than any other oil, so your engine will last longer and require fewer repairs, (2) you will not have to change your oil as often, saving you time and money compared to conventional oil changes, and (3) you will get better fuel economy if you drive the same way as before. The biggest mistake people make is putting cheap, low quality oil and filters in their engines, which causes their engines to wear out quicker - and they don't have the money to replace that expensive engine or entire car.

The vast majority of "synthetic" oils sold in stores from the major oil companies are really Group III Hydrocracked oils. These are very good oils, when compared to their lower quality Group I and II conventional oil shelf mates. But until a 1999 court decision, these Group III oils wouldn't have been considered synthetic. Prior to 1999, synthetics were made from Group IV and V Base Stocks and synthetic additives. AMSOIL makes some of the few remaining true synthetics (Group IV & V) left on the market.

Yes, those other cars were a 3rd and 4th vehicle and used. If you pull you oil cap and look down in the valve train, if there's a hugh build up of sludge, don't do it. If it's minor it shouldn't be a problem. I still use ST full synthetic 10w30 in my 2016 Tucson, and 2017 Sportage. That 5w20 is for fuel mileage and I only use that during winters.

All oil is to some degree semisynthetic and therefore has some of the superior solvent properties of synthetic oil. You can't escape it. If the engine has sludge in the valve and cam area, don't start scraping it. If you change your oil more frequently, it will start cleaning out a dirty engine. Conservative opinion is, if conventional oil was original in engine and the vehicle is high mileage, keep on using conventional. Unfortunately, you cannot entirely escape the consequences of past neglected maintenance or the consequences of having a worn engine. You have to do your normal maintenance and hope for the best.

+Ray G Thanks for the question, and it is a good one! Due to a Federal case between Mobil and Castrol in 1999 (Castrol won), most of the "synthetic" motor oil on the market today is really a highly-refined conventional oil, made using a process called hydrocracking. Very few motor oils are still blended using synthetic basestocks from Group IV (PAO) or Group V (Ester). AMSOIL Signature Series is one of these products, and while the purchase price may be slightly higher, the true cost is much lower, because it will last so much longer and protect your engine so much better. If you are buying house-brand synthetic motor oil and getting it for not much more than a name brand conventional oil, you are most likely buying a hydrocracked oil - they are very good, but not as good as the old true synthetics.
@anonymike8280

Nonsense. Match the specification of the product, the specifications of the production and the type of driving and you will have no problems. At this point in time, all conventional motors oils are synthetic blend to some degree, probably at least ten percent synthetic, simply because the carrier oils the additives come in is synthetic. I don't know what the industry standard for semisynthetic is but most people say, around 30 percent. I suspect semisynthetic is made by partially carrying the refining process for Group III synthetic but not completing it. There is, in general, no great price difference between dino (conventional), semisynthetic and low-end synthetic. Unless specifically stated on the label, assume that any synthetic is Group III. Group III qualifies as synthetic for one thing because the lighter components and the paraffins are refined out of the mineral base stock and the molecules are altered in their structure and also because it meets the technical specification for engines requiring synthetic oil. I would suggest, though, to treat Group III synthetic as glorified conventional for oil change purposes. All you need to do is adjust your oil change interval accordingly. If you do your own oil changes and your vehicle is difficult to work on, then use an oil that allows a longer oil change interval. My self, I drive a vehicle with a 1990s era bimetal four cylinder engine. Bimetal means cast iron block, alloy head. I use semisynthetic and have an oil change interval of 2800 miles. Why? Conventional was original in this engine and I want to keep the rear seal good, and I drive all short strips. Short trips constitutes severe duty. The idea that synthetic oil might damage seals in an engine originally using conventional is a theory, but changing a rear seal is a big job. If you have someone else do it, it going to cost you at least $600 most of the time.

filthy sanchez Thanks for your comments. I agree that the problem is not with the oils themselves - it is with the way they are marketed. I also agree with you that a modern engine can run a long time on conventional oils, as long as proper maintenance is performed on a schedule that fits the engine and operating conditions. But drop-for-drop, conventional or syn-blend oils cannot compete with a full synthetic for maximum protection and performance. It boils down to simple chemistry, and the full synthetics will win. Although full synthetics might be more expensive, the cost can easily be recouped with longer change intervals, better fuel economy and longer engine life. But if you really want to see full synthetic lubricants excel, go look at automatic transmissions. It will blow you away!

While there is not a precise definition, in general, a 100% synthetic oil product includes a full synthetic (Group IV or V) base oil, and the additive package ingredients are carried in a full synthetic oil as well. Since 1999 in the US market, there really is no industry or government definition of a synthetic oil. Most "synthetic" motor oils sold in the USA are blended with a highly refined conventional base oil (Group III hydro-cracked), or some blend of Group III HC, Group IV and V base oils. AMSOIL Signature Series motor oils remain a true synthetic product and meet the 100% synthetic benchmark.

I do not have any side-by-side comparison testing of AMSOIL vs Kendall. Those types of tests are becoming very difficult due to cost and legal challenges from companies that didn't fare well. Regarding 3.6 HF GM engine: those have some known problems - mostly wear in timing chains. Without fault analysis, it is just guessing as to what really happened. Engines from every OEM fail every day, and many with low miles. Some are put together wrong. Some are due to part failures from incorrect manufacturing process. Many causes. Rarely is it engine oil, unless owner/driver never changed oil.

thanks for this video, the company I lease a truck from with a paccar engine requires at the oil change to use synthetic blend oil and boosted the change interval from 30,000 to 60,000 miles, I can tell you assuredly by 40,000 you can see a drop I fuel millage and the engine is running like shit, they assure us paccar approved the oil change interval, I highly doubt that now after seeing this. they have recently been telling us to make sure we keep our idle times down as it is causing problems with the def systems and causing quite costly repairs to the operator and significant down time, now we have apu' s I our trucks and fuel fired heaters so no one's idle time is really high at all and since I see other companies running the same trucks and engines as ours without apu' s idling all the time, I wonder if it's just what they are saying and it's because of the change interval causing more soot in the exhaust or something, does anyone have a idea on this ?
@Best-Synthetic-Oilscom
@Best-Synthetic-Oilscom 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the note. Switching to syn-blend oil and extending oil change intervals is very common these days, as owners/operators try to reduce expenses and downtime - both are very good goals. The key to achieving these goals is proper product selection, as not every syn-blend oil on the market is able to run at these extended intervals. If you really want to know what is happening with your oil, you will need to start performing oil analysis on the oil at regular intervals. Without oil analysis results, you are guessing at the condition of your oil. At the beginning of your next oil change, I would recommend you submit an oil sample every 15,000 miles, including when the oil is drained at 60,000 miles. Also - be prepared for a major change in the diesel engine oil market come this December, when CJ-4 oil is replaced by CK-4 and FA-4 oil specs. You will also start to see lower viscosity oils start taking a bigger share of the diesel oil market to allow for increased fuel economy. The dealers get their hands on cars they would have never seen again (unless warranty work was required), and then they get to charge very high prices for the non-free service items (air filter, cabin air filter, fuel system cleaning, upper engine cleaning, etc, etc.) They also know that a person is more likely to buy a new car if they are already on their lot. In many cases, the dealers are using the cheapest oil and filters available as part of these "free" oil changes. Consumers must always keep the motives of the dealer in mind - they are motivated to sell you new cars and make maximum money from you servicing the current one.

Could a Synthetic Blend oil be responsible for gumming up a oil sending unit on my 2013 Chevy Tahoe, 5.3L engine. I have religiously changed my oil every 3,000 miles. The Tahoe has about 34,000 miles on it currently.

It is possible that a low-quality oil created your situation - even with the frequent oil changes and low overall miles on engine. You would need to perform an oil analysis of the used oil to know for sure. You might also have a mechanical problem with the engine (low operating temperature from stuck thermostat, coolant leaking into engine oil, air leak in the intake tract that is allowing large amounts of dirt into engine, etc). Does this engine spend long periods of time idling in cold weather? That could contribute to oil problems as well.

I own a Ford Focus se 2012-2013 my owners manual says that I should use 5w20 blend synthetic but my question is what is going to happen if I use full synthetic oil ? Would it damage my engine in a long term ?
@sparklysparks77
@sparklysparks77 7 жыл бұрын
What is your mileage? If you are under, say, 50,000 miles, it is perfectly safe to use synthetic oil on your Ford. A good mechanic will let you know exactly how your engine is doing, but I think you should have no problems going full synth. On the other hand, if there isn't anything wrong with your blend, why change? Cheers...

Amsoil is the best but man it's expensive, I had to pay almost $13 a quart. No I think Valvoline full synthetic or mobile one is good enough
@Best-Synthetic-Oilscom

Yes, the price seems high, but I encourage you to calculate the cost per mile. Other brands don't normally support extended drain intervals beyond OEM recommendations (especially if you fall into the Severe driving style - which most people do), while AMSOIL Signature Series oils are good for at least 15,000 miles, and up to 25,000 miles in many applications. In the end, you are paying the cost, not the price.

jake chaplin well not really, the problem with an older motor going from conv to real full syn oil is because real full syn oil by design on a molecular lvl has a more even/consistent smaller size molecular structure/molecules then std conv oil has making it easier for full syn oil to get by/weep or leak past older seals and gaskets vs conv oil having larger more uneven size molecules that can’t get thru/leak past oil seal/ gaskets as easy as full syn can. Hope that clears up why real full syn oil can & in some cases does leak where conv oil didn’t leak,

Some people say ALL SYN BLENDS are not 50% Synthetic oi.... Well read this. WRONG PENNZOIL SYN BLEND IS 50% SYNTHETIC.. READ Benefits of Pennzoil® Synthetic Blend dexos1™ Motor Oil Contains at least 50% synthetic base oil for added oxidation stability, improved volatility and low temperature properties Backed by the Pennzoil Lubrication Limited Warranty

Thank you for the information! This is very good news. Consumer complaints and demands are causing Big Oil to improve their products. The consumer wins. BTW: dexos1 is a very tough oil spec to meet, which most likely caused Pennzoil to include at least 50% synthetic base stocks in their blends.

Im glad you responded. Also yes Dexos1 is tough and I thought the very same thing. Pennzoil also has Pennzoil GOLD that has 30% Synthetic. I dunno why they have it however my point is that is NOT dexos1 and I mean the Pennzoil Gold.
@Best-Synthetic-Oilscom

Dexos1 has a 12% volatility limit - the oil can only lose 12% of weight when subjected to high heat testing. API SN limit is 15%. AMSOIL Signature Series is 10% or less.

Hi, what is the problem with Synthetic Blend oil. Is it problem with old cars or new cars engine?
@Best-Synthetic-Oilscom
@Best-Synthetic-Oilscom 8 жыл бұрын
There's nothing actually wrong with syn blend oils - they perform as well, if not slightly better, than most conventional oils. My problem is in the marketing of them. While they contain some amount (% unknown) of synthetic oil (well, most likely a hydro-cracked conventional oil that is allowed to be called synthetic in the USA), they still contain a large amount (probably much more than 50%) of conventional oil, so like in most other areas, the product is only as good as its weakest component. If you want the protection and performance that is available from a true, full, synthetic motor oil, then use an oil that contains only base stocks and additives that are synthetic. AMSOIL Signature Series is one of those oils. Conventional oils cannot match the performance and protection of a full synthetic.

No thanks. I dont care how long Amsoil can go between changes. Its going to get dirty. I'd rather use something like Supertech and change it three times as often. My oil will be clean and I will save money on top of it.
@anonymike8280
@anonymike8280 2 жыл бұрын
Clean is the bottom line. You don't have to consider the ability of the oil to neutralize acids or suspend contaminants if they are never there in the first place. Nothing wrong with a 3000 mile/5000 kilometer oil change even with synthetic. Low-priced synthetic meets the specifications if synthetic is required. If you do your own oil changes and the vehicle is very hard to work on, maybe that's a reason to go for product that allow a longer interval. Otherwise, where's the beef?

I would use Amsoil but its so hard to find. You cant get it in a local store. I would love to use the AMSOIL ATF in my Honda Accord V6 3.0 Automatic... But you have to order from a magazine for somthing.. To much Trouble IMO.

John Hiram While I agree that clean oil is important, there is a vast difference between oils on the market. Oils made from Group IV PAO and Group V Ester base stocks are far superior to any other oil for lubricating automotive components, like engines, transmissions, differentials, etc.
