After an early exit in the League cup, sitting bottom of their Champions League group, and inconsistent results in the Premier League, Ten Hag has struggled to build on the relatively successful previous season. New Big money Signings Onana, Hojlund and mount have looked good at times, but overall have gone missing when needed.
It’s easy to look around and blame the underperformance on the various issues surrounding the club, whether it’s the changing room drama, the ownership issues, or the injuries to key players, but let’s take a look at what's really happening on the pitch

The coach has to know each player's passing range. Seeing the large distance between red shirts, reminded me of Henry's questioning on Wenger. Why they don't pass to me? Wenger replied, 'Can they see you?' From that, Henry knew each player was different, some could pass long, some only prefer short passes. A very detailed analysis highlighting weaknesses in playing from the back, which can be lifted simply by bringing players closer for an easier pass. Indeed this is football meta

Ten Hag is underestimating the Premier League. Ajax were the top club in Holland. Even Crystal Palace can beat the top team and they barely avoid relegation every year. Ten Hag is not playing to suit the players or his opposition

@Timbone07 it's not underestimating, it's just lack of quality in our team. He can play route 1, like he did last season, but as soon as we try to play more possession based game, we don't have the quality. For ex, every single city defender can play an accurate long pass, but can we name one United defender who can do that consistently, no. Similarly midfield wingers etc. This is why for the past several years 2nd season of a new manager at United have been their worst, because they try to play the tactical football, but players can't execute it. This is my opinion.
@Timbone07
@Timbone07 3 ай бұрын
@@pradhyumnasampigettaya3113 My point is our midfield. We sold Fred but didnt replace him. It is like the Herera situation all over again. A holding midfield of Casemiro and Mount is arrogance. Fred is not great but he needed to be replaced. We probably need 3 actual central midfielders instead of pushing attacking midfielders in that position. That he thought we didn't need a Casemiro backup/player to supplement him is shocking. Amrabat could have been the guy but he was a late panic but but that leaves us with only senior 2 recognized central midfielders in our squad.

@@Timbone07 it doesn’t matter what he thinks, if board don’t approve, nothing can be done. Do you really think he would have wanted to go into this season with Harry, Evans, McTominay etc.. But that is the level this club has fallen. Other thing is, I’m just hoping once we get all of our players (back from injuries) we play at least a bit better. Hope🤞🏼

One of the best analyses I’ve seen on their tactical issues. The one element I would add is passing quality. They’re often hesitant to make certain passes, they slow down play and don’t look composed in their play. That is a coaching issue IMO, they don’t look like they’ve practised their approach during matches so execution is shaky. Great video! Glad I stumbled upon this.
@MaxwellAyo
@MaxwellAyo 5 ай бұрын
Idk if it is a coaching issue as much as it is a confidence issue. It is clear even from this video that there is a plan, the plan just seems to require very brave and risky decisions. It is very clear during matches that Man Utd players hesitate to play risky passes, wether due to fear of making a mistake, lack of confidence in their ability to execute, or lack of confidence in the receiver to control the pass. That's a confidence and maybe technical ability issue (e.g Wan Bissaka is not exactly a great outlet in build up). You see Man City players make risky passes in build up all the time and pull it off, because of confidence. My guess is this is also why Onana has been moved deeper than during pre-season (after that poor Dalot pass led to that lob). My hypothesis is in training they are able to pull off this build up phases, but in match when the pressure is on, they don't have the confidence to go through with it. I guess what I'd say is if Ten Hag doesn't have the players to build up that way either due to injuries or general lack of quality, he should tweak the build up to his players strengths rather than persisting with something that isn't working.
@azeezladipo
@azeezladipo 4 ай бұрын
I beg to differ on this. The coach must insist the pass be made everytime players get in behind opposition defenders. I tell my mates all the time. Ten Hag must fix this problem then we create more chances which can win games. He doesn't seem to have a clear thought out plan A, B and C on how the team should break down any defence. He depends solely on individual brilliance to bail out. Anyone who knows football can fix United's problems. (Just play the dam pass once you see a movement) doesn't matter matter who. Just play the damn pass like Newcastle and City players do
@ots5891
@ots5891 3 ай бұрын
@MaxwellAyo you're right. This is my problem with ETH, if the players are not confident with his tactics, he should be flexible enough to tweak his style to their strengths. But ten haag is just so stubborn. Being flexible is a sign of a great coach. Use what u have and get the best out of the players.
@CloudedGardener
@CloudedGardener 3 ай бұрын
So I think you’re both right & the clubs disastrous approach to recruiting can’t be ignored. ETH is the best coach we’ve had since Fergie IMO, I judge that by their philosophy as mourinho isn’t my cup of tea but the results speak for themself. That said it isn’t a high bar for ETH & I don’t rate him very highly. He talks about how he wants to play often but I fail to see any of that in our gameplay unless the opponent is completely open defensively. We definitely have a poor squad but the idea these players can’t play 1-2’s, pass and move or execute attacking patterns is nonsense. If luton can do this we can as well. My sense is that these things aren’t being practiced or focused on which is why we don’t see them besides one off’s. Even when we’re in top form the style of play is not consistent or attractive. We can’t control games. United won’t be a top team for at least 10 more years, what we need is a coach with a well defined philosophy to teach these players how to play football. If we can find an identity & play it consistently, then we can bring in a coach to try and go for titles. Pochettino was the right choice IMO, Bielsa, someone with a clear approach that’s entertaining. I’d rather lose every game 4-3 than watch us play how we have since Fergie left. Just my take, we need to be honest and recognize that proper trophies aren’t a realistic goal any time soon. We need to learn how to play modern football & based on the rondo session I saw recorded in training this year perhaps we should start there.

All the questioning and seeing these players over the years, I do wonder if it's a quality issue, especially the defenders, the sheer inability to handle press, and lack of passing prowess against a tight defensive lines, because when Licha plays, he does all those things efficiently, Evans can go long accurately, but lacks mobility, Casemiro, Varane, Lindelof are nowhere close to having these skillsets.

Spot on. We had it with Pogba. Frankly, top sides don't really need a really top press resistant player if the system and structure is good. But the problem is we have too many press-vulnerable players in midfield and attack. Bruno Fernandes certainly isn't one. Everytime he gets the ball he wants it out of his feet immediately like its the last minute of the game.

United need martinez and shaw back to use onanas strength and break through the first press in buildup. Martinez especially is so key to making tactical fouls or simply winning the ball before the opponent can start a counter, should their own gegenpress fail. Højlund still needs time to develop, he gets lots of chances but fumbles the ball, either when finishing or making poorly weighted passes to the wingers. Once these things are in order, I believe ETH will start working on a single pivot midfield with two advanced 8s as in pre season, which will create more overloads for his minimum width frontline approach. (Which, to be honest the U21 side executed way better than our first XI, Mainoo especially being a key player.)

Brilliant video. Excellent analysis. You summed it up quite well. I think the biggest issue is the fact that because we press so intensely and high, players dont have enough time to recover, especially forwards. For ten hag's defence to work, 1. They need to choose the right moments to press and 2. They need faster players with big engines.

I've seen a lot of your videos, but this is the best one yet. You clearly presented a detailed explanation I haven't seen anywhere else, and your production values have gone from Not Distracting to Pregame Show Or Better caliber. Keep up the good work. As for Man U, when I watch them the thing that immediately stands out to me is how poor they are out of possession. Rashford and Fernandes should have to buy a ticket when they don't have the ball, and, as you mentioned, their 8's do not track back when the ball goes to the touchline. It's like 9 guys are just waiting to counterattack instead of doing the obvious first step: getting the ball back.

brilliant video and great analysis. I love how you explain what ManUtd is lacking also showing what other teams do to solve the issues. You gained a new follower! I watched games last season but only watched some highlights of the matches against Luton, Copenhaghen and City for this season, I saw that Utd lacks both in attacking and defense. My opinion is that Shaw's injury was underestimated because Shaw helped a lot the Red Devils build-up from the back, and he could also cover his teammates when in attack because he dropped down as a CB. He is great and important for England national team too. Reguilon can't be compared to him and neither can Malacia. Instead of spending 75millions for Hojlund they should have invested more on a replace for Shaw. Having that said, a 4-2-3-1 is maybe a too risky formation for Man Utd now, I think maybe a 4-3-3 would be better. Playing with 2 pivot and one central midfielder (like Ten Hag's Ajax for example), two wingers and one central forward would allow the Red Devils to cover better in defense (Casemiro can't cover the spaces on the edge of the box alone but another pivot could help him), this in my opinion would allow also to let the two full-backs Van Bissaka and Dalot to stay higher (as Man City does) being closer to the wingers and the central midfielder. and Onana would have one more pass option (the two CB and the two pivot) and the two wingers would stretch the opponent defense creating space for other players running forward. But we need the 11 players to work as a unit, as an automatic system , attack together and defend together, not leaving 4 players to press the opponent and the other 6 all behind in defense creating a big gap between the lines which is obviously exploited by the opponent. But to make players work as a block and learn moves, you need time that is something you'll never have in clubs like United, that's the real problem. It's useless to change coach and players and waste money every year and restart from zero every time. Thank you for Your video. It helps me also on my Football Manager career

While United struggled defensively in the beginning they seem to have found some security with Maguire and Evans at the back(a short term solution). But that makes the team more predictible in the build-up from the back(Maguire takes way too many touches) which carries over to the attack. Once the ball has reached the attackers the defenders are well organized and it's difficult to create good chances. But they are also suffering from poor linkup play and lack of offensive ideas, so they need moments of individual brillance to score. With the all the wingers in poor form you can't rely on that. To become a better team I think United need to replace all the players who don't have much to give in the long run(Maguire, Lindelof, Martial, Sancho, Antony, VDB, Casemiro).

I’d really appreciate the video and I’m sure a lot of people with questions about his style of play will too. Thanks @footballmeta

The Midfield and the lack of still of play it feels like Ten Hag is are unable to implement a possession based style of play they seem to struggle against a low block they are still more efficent in transition. Injuries plagued them but the lack of consistency and a lack of identity in terms of a style of play is really hurting their season. Not to mention individual errors as well

Well analysed. As someone who really wanted Ten Hag to come to Utd, I'm surprised that he seems to struggle to adapt when things aren't working. He's a good manager but perhaps lacks versatility and the ability to work with who's fit or how games are unfolding. Discipline is one thing but can he react to a VUCA world?

1. Man United players are always spread far apart from each other, making it more difficult to find a good linkup pass which eventually leads to losing possession of the ball. 2. They use a lot of long balls which will invariably be less accurate in finding a teammate than shorter passes. This is another major way they lose possession of the ball unnecessarily. 3. They seem to not understand the concept of momentum and using it to their advantage. Many times, the best pass to give would be a pass forward - getting even closer to the opponent's goal post - but Man United players tend to pass a lot of balls back unnecessarily. No attempt at creativity to find a forward pass, no press resistant style to stay with the ball long enough to find a forward pass. And the longer they stay with the ball in their own half, the more time they give the opponent to regroup their defence. 4. They don't overload the opponent's 18 box. Many times, Man UTD move forward without overloading the opponent's 18 with their players in order to increase their statistical chance of getting the ball to score. You see this even in the way they play corner kicks. Always just a handful of players in the box. They need more forward-moving players in the box to receive crosses and passes and to jump on loose balls. 5. They need to press like Man City - pressing in small sets of about 3 players blockading the opponent with the ball in order to force them pass the ball to a place they can capitalise on it and not just merely send individual players to press in order to win the ball.

Thank you. I think you are right. On coach level, Dutch coaches, like with the National team, it lack coaching into the very-detail execution like how stretching defense lines, timing of running/passing, creating spaces. in short, detail coaching which top coaches like Ancelotti, Klopp, and Guardiola do. Also Dutch coaches in general tend to hold the old standard positioning philosophy of Johan Cruyff. Missing Lisandro Martinez is felt. In this video Manchester City, Real Madrid midfield was mentioned. But please also do mention their quality on the midfield. Rodri, Silva, De Bruyne, Modric, Bellingham, Tchouaméni. With all respect to Manchester United players, I think the level is different. Top players just reject to join United nowadays. Manchester United wingers, except Garnacho, are just not good enough. They show no treat to the opponents and can't pass defense lines. Son's match against Newcastle Dec2023 is a good example of a top winger. Low passes, outplaying full backs, good timing, and Running.

6:00 Yes Lindelof dropping deep would help. Onana needs to scan the field and realize other players are open. In that sequence he had the left back open. He doesn’t trust the defense. Some of my videos get copyright and it’s time consuming to reupload them. I state in one of my videos that Onana must be patient when playing the ball through the back. Defense lack situational awareness. If we’re playing a 4-2-3-1 why is only one CDM looking to play the ball in the middle. We need ball carrying midfielders that get in behind midfielders. A 4-1-4-1 is not viable. Is destabilizing their lines and not enough creativity is exhibited. Good video!

Sorry but the build up issues plus the timing of runs not in sync both point to injuries like it or not. Watch united's matches until both shaw and martinez got injured, they were lot better at playing out. Since then they have stopped doing it often and that's the reason onana doesn't push up in midfield. Not having a steady back 4 means no consistent patterns. Although there haven't been injuries much in midfield or offense so no excuse there except decision making and poor finishing. We have clearly seen teams like liverpool, city without rodri, arsenal last season, newcastle and spurs recently when they lose majority of key players especially in defense everything suffers. Yes there are tactical issues but injuries cannot just be discarded like that.

The build-up from the back issue is mainly due to injuries on important players: Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw, Tyrell Malacia. Eric ten Hag mentioned recently that if Martinez wasn't injured, Varane would play more. Pointing towards that he want the RCB to play differently than Harry Maguire, but if the LCB can't do the Martinez plays, Varane is out of play. Another thing this season is that Eric ten Hag has changed LB/LWB way too often to get a functioning build-up. They aren't natural on that position, and therefore get out of position way too often during the early phases of the build-up. A huge difference between ten Hag Ajax and ten Hag Manchester United is the mobility of the wingers. Rashford and Antony are static and expect to be stars that create things with the ball. Change that to how it was with Tadic in Ajax, whose role was to create space for his teammates. not a single winger in United do that at the moment. Defensively we got the same issue. Antony and Rashford are static, which means both Höjlund and Bruno Fernandes get played out of position by the opposition way too often. Also using McTominay as a sitting midfielder instead of an aggressive attacking midfielder he is usually running out of position creating issues for his teammates, usually Harry Maguire and the RB/RWB.

This season we desperately needed a cb, fb, st, cm. Cb and fb since we offloaded so much people that couldve easily played a role this season like alvaro fernandes, williams for depth, tuanzebe, mengi, and baily. My main target wouldve been pavard since his versatile and has played with varane. Cm, its crazy the season fred finally play decent or on some nights he was clear or bruno in creating chances ultimately leaves, he creates space by dribbling and stuck to his bread and butter throughballs, and we needed was an upgrade to that we lack physicality in the midfield since it was obvious casemiro would slow down. I'd wouldve chosen Llrorente from athletico since he has the pace to make up for casemiro lack off, build to help defensively and pace of play add to the counter attack playstyle, or connor Gallagher instead of mount since he knows how to position himself on the field help get the ball to point a to b while also covering and identifying the oppositions main outlet. St is weird cause we mainly just needed a person that be able to hold the ball for runners to play off since realistically our wide players never look to cross the ball only the fullbacks at best. So playing with a CF would be a better fit for such situations since they be able to help overload the midfield when not in possession of the ball or to create a long ball diagonal situation to our wingers or overlapping fbs when opposing teams press high to create more space behind them to attack. There isnt really any know target for me to pick in this position since majority like felix, nkunku, xavi, and such just transferred or have inconsistent forms so id just lets someone like mount, donny maybe amad play in the role since their all technically adapt for said position. Gk i wouldnt have minded getting onana but letting go of de gea wouldnt have been the way, dont care if oh their trying lower said wages and such, dont care, he was our only ticket for being in said position for competing in europe every year, he should be earning at least over 300k for what his been able to pull from his own accord. Then crucify him for mistakes in a final that he got u too, like blame the club for not getting a decent 2nd option to reduce his load, last season mans almost played every match. Of course he gonna make a mistake, wanna know why cause his human

3 stats I want to know about United: - the average number of passes per game between the centre halves this season - the average number of touches per player per possession this season - the attempt:goal ratio of our wingers this season (which will be absolutely diabolical) - starving Hojlund of service when he’s getting into great positions

Brilliant stuff! I think you’re peerless when it comes to quality football analysis videos, the level of detail and the editing is superb. One thing I will add about United is if Ten Hag prioritized a controller type midfielder with good defensive instincts like Andre instead of Mount this summer, United would’ve had an extra player in build-up as well as an extra body while defending transitions and cutbacks. They’re dearly missing this player

Watching them today, against Tottenham, they looked shocking AFTER winning possession. So basically, in transition with the ball. Many times it was Wan Bissaka, who won the ball back in a clever fashion and then gave it away in SHOCKING fashion. Also, Rashford's decision making and selfish play seems to be a constant issue. How many assists does he have to Hojlund again, this season? And how many does new signing Thuram, have for Lautaro, at Inter? Sure, Lautaro is better than Hojlund, but is Thuram rated higher than Rashford? Well, he SHOULD be! But I don't think he is, at least not by English fans.

I didn’t want Onana or Mount in the first place. We didn’t need to change a goalkeeper who won the golden glove last season and we needed a n6 or a number n8 to play along Casemiro. The main job of a goalkeeper is to prevent goals and De Gea is the best shot stoper around.
