I think BMCC, are basically trying to keep cost down, and give a chance to micro-budget filmmakers to be able to afford the cheap ef mount lenses. Beginners filmmakers are desperate to put out quality film without going into debt, and even that said, most still will.

Yep absolutely! That's why this is still the main camera I own but just wanted to put out some ideas on what their next revision could look like! Also, this isn't their most entry level model, so I don't feel as bad giving it a bit more of a critique than their 4K model :)

1:14 - Manual focus has always been the norm for cinema lenses and cinema camera. To say that the issue with PL mounts lack of data transmission is that it doesn't help with auto focus, well that's not exactly a concern with pros more than it is with videographers. Auto-focus is not a industry standard thing in the film industry. 4:35 - You're right, the BMPCC 6K Pro can be used as a B-Cam. It has been used as a B-Cam for "Squid Game" so far from what I can find. Great video, I love your ideas in the end as I too think BM should adapt the RF mount in future iterations of their cameras. Fujinon MK-Rs, from what I can see on B&H are the only professional RF cinema lenses. I know there are Rokinon lenses but to me they are photo lenses first and foremost due to the amount of breathing. Until I see Rokinon XEENs using the RF mounts, the lesser ones will always be consider photo lenses to me. Not a fan of using photo lenses on my BMPCC 6K Pro or any cinema camera. Again, just my opinion.

Yeah, I'm right there with you on your first point but with lower end cinema cameras, there will be a lot of crossover individuals who might not understand the lack of autofocus so I figured I'd highlight it. Didn't even know about Squidgame (that's really cool) but coming from a set that just used an FX6 as a crash-cam, I knew there was a huge possibility that this could and would be used at some point, it really does have an amazing sensor for the price! And thank you! I think RF, L Mount or any lower flange distance mount that BM can either license or use would be an amazing choice because at the end of the day, you can put a locking lens adapter on it and adapt it to different systems! I'm not sure well see many cinema lenses use these mounts specifically as most of them lack a locking component (although it could be designed in) but could eventually happen. We've seen a lot of optical jumps in clarity from canon with the RF mount so it definitely has some very significant benefits for native glass as well. A locking RF would be my pick for budget cinema work in an ideal world!

We've been producing a ton of client projects over the last year with 6K Pros. They are amazing cameras, but we are in agreeance that EF needs to go haha we hope the next iteration of the pocket cameras have RF mounts. Or even the option to put EF, RF, or even PL. Really enjoyed your presentation. Keep up the good work. I use the Zcam and they already use the EF locking mount and I can tell you they are rock solid especially with my cinema lens. In addition, the mounts are interchangeable so you can easily ad PL mount as well which is sold. But I have to include the fact that the zcam bodies are made of metal and built like tanks. It would be nice if Blackmagic redesign the body away from plastic (but cost saving may be compromised admittingly).

Thank you so much! Zcam really does a lot right with their formfactor and hardware design, I would absolutely love to see Blackmagic take a few cues from them when it comes to their physical design. A full or at least partially metal body would also be a very, very welcome change from the almost hallow feeling of most BM cameras. Even if BM just came out with a cube style camera, I would be over the moon (okay and maybe with a locking EF mount 😅)

@BretMiller
@BretMiller 2 жыл бұрын
I think the whole point of this camera was to use cheap stills glass like the Sigma 18-35mm. I would go as far as guessing that Black Magic saw people adapting the 18-35mm to their MFT Pocket 4k with a speed booster and said: hmmm super35 sensor and EF mount will give these users exactly what they want.

I would 100% agree with you if the camera also had a modicum of autofocus ability but it doesn’t which makes stills lenses really difficult to use, especially with the focus rings they put on them these days. A lot of people still use them but cinema lenses just make focusing so much simpler

Very good video! I use photo lenses, and have considered switching to one of the new mirrorless mounts, but I think I’ll stick to EF for the moment. I can use EF lenses on basically every camera released in the last 20 years. I can use my EF Sigma glass on my own BMPCC6K Pro, my Sony FE mount cameras, on the Panasonic MFT cameras we have at the office, the Canon C70 we get from the rental house, and basically anything else I might use in the future. That flexibility far outweighs all the downsides of not only using photography instead of cine lenses, but also of continuing to purchase lenses with a now outdated lens mount.
@JacobVossFilms
@JacobVossFilms 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! EF is very adaptable, and on the lens side I agree its a very versatile choice however, the mount itself, isn't too versatile just as far as the technology goes. It was designed over 30 years ago so I definitely understand why but the long flange distance of the mount makes it very difficult to adapt anything except native glass. I think it makes a decent enough stills mount but the lack of adaptability along with the lack of a lock in most models makes it a tough choice for me in any type of cinema application. Now the good thing is there is a huge amount of native glass so you definitely get a great selection! Love the C70s RF mount though, shot with one the other day - it was great.

@@JacobVossFilms back in the day before mirroless, EF was one of the best mounts to have because most of the other systems had even longer flange distance. To name a few Nikon F, Olympus OM, and M42. One other thing to add is the Red DSMC 2 EF mount turns and clicks like a regular EF mount but it also has a PL style locking system on top of that. So I think that is the best of both worlds. It’s very solid and it doesn’t move at all. It grips the lens really tight. I’d vote for that idea on the Blackmagic.

The BMPCC line of cinema cameras was designed to give filmmakers a low cost into the cinema realm in an INEXPENSIVE option, and offering high quality image for indie filmmakers. The URSA line which offers a pl-mount adapter is for an higher end filmmaker. The lens options for the BMPCC line is catering to budget style lenses options, even still there are a lot of cinema lenses with Ef-mounts: Canon cinema lenses and Zeiss for an example.
@JacobVossFilms
@JacobVossFilms 2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely but even the ursa mini G2 doesn't have a locking EF style mount which was my main issue - I'd love to see them use a smaller flange distance mount in the future so we could adapt more lenses but the primary concern here was the rotational image shift when using a follow focus on a lens without a support.

How often would you say you work with the 6K Pro on professional sets? I would imagine that shoots that have a 1st AC on set would probably just get 2 of the same camera then different brands. Or do you work with blackmagic alot? Like the URSA?
@JacobVossFilms
@JacobVossFilms 2 жыл бұрын
I have only had 6K Pros on sets I've been the DP on so far. Probably about 50% of my AC jobs are Arri, 40% are Sony and 10% are a random assortment. Since getting out of film school, I've seen far fewer Blackmagics though. Generally sets that use multiple cameras will have one high end version and then cut it with lower end cameras from the same brand - i.e. Using the Sony Venice for A cam and then having an FX9 or FX6 for the B. The issue with Blackmagic in particular is that it doesn't have a lot of high end options (and to be honest it lacks in reliability) which keeps it's powerhouse lower to mid-range stuff from being used on a lot of professional sets. The form factor being very difficult to rig also makes it less likely to be used. Now, this camera definitely can be used as an A-Cam but because of the lack of locking lens mount, awkward formfactor, and rear screen (that gets covered up whenever using a battery plate), means it doesn't get used a ton for those kinds of sets. If you can get through all the downsides though, it can still get amazing images!

Nice take. I don't agree with everything you said, but I certainly agree that BM should incorporate a few things with their next major camera (not these Pocket and Ursa mini updates). I would hope for an RF mount that can be adapted to PL or EF. I'd also like to see perhaps global shutter, better dynamic range with a minimum of 15 stops, a body that's more of a box or rectangular design without the slope in the back. I'd also like to see SDI, Genlock, the option to black balance, and timecode. I can live with or without internal NDs, since I use large and small matte boxes with rotating CPL filters and ND filters. I think the cameras can be used as A cams, but given the harsh environment of some sets, anything short of some sort of metal won't even get a look from major studios. There's a video on KZfaq that someone made showing off a "wish-list" design. Not gonna lie, that idea was fire.
@JacobVossFilms
@JacobVossFilms 2 жыл бұрын
I hope they can achieve global shutter in the future but I read a while ago that global shutters actually introduce quite a bit of noise and reduce dynamic range. It's an unfortunate byproduct but hopefully in the mean time they can lower the current rolling shutter to closer to where Arri is currently. But more than anything, as you mentioned, I want a box design - this form factor is so tricky to rig up and difficult to balance. A box design with an RF mount - oooo man I would pick that up in a second. I'd love to see your other addons as well, SDI, Genlock, black balance and an improved internal timecode (right now you can sync it with a tentacle sync without much issue - I actually did that on this video) but it could be more accurate and easier with different port options. Gonna have to check out that wish-list video, thanks for letting me know about it!

@@JacobVossFilms @Jacob Voss I also want them to develop a Box shaped camera body. if they don't want to spend to much on R&D then they should just put 6k pro sensor into a boxed shaped body. mount should be replaceable. people should be able to choose if they want Z mount or RF or other lens mount. i don't know if with Mirrorless mount they will be able to have internal ND filters but DJI 4D have it. so i don't know if BM can do that too but it will be good.

I know that this might not be a concern for some people but don’t you think if BMD makes all these updates, the camera will no longer be as affordable and will hinder ample people from being able to transition into “cinema” cameras? Don’t get me wrong, I would more than appreciate these changes too but I’m always concerned that if there are little to no trade offs with the camera then it will be indicative in the price as well. Truth be told, the Komodo already does most of the things that you mentioned and I personally believe that a natural step in progression would be buying into Red if those features are pivotal. We obviously have to egg on manufactures to improve and I understand but BMD are currently performing miracles with their sensors, post production workflow and reasonable cost to entry.
@Aaron_Smith_OM
@Aaron_Smith_OM 2 жыл бұрын
@@sakhiwomthunzi Good point, but I think BMD should implement those improvements to compete even more with RED and retain customers. The Komodo is nice, but to be honest, for what it offers, it feels more like a lateral move than an upgrade from the Pocket 6K. I think within the next two years, BMD will release something that gives us more of what we are asking for and yeah, it might be 1K extra, but I'm sure it'll be worth it.

Reach out through my email if you ever have any Camera Assistant or DP work (I would list it here but spam bots crawl the comments for that kind of info, so I'll just direct you to the "About" Section on my channel). As far as the DZO line and Meike line go, I haven't used them personally however, the main issue generally arises with the EF mount itself having a rotational play. Its usually not a matter of weight, but hey, those could have really tight tolerance EF mounts, so its possible there isn't too much of an issue with rotational jitter with those specific lenses. I do know that my set of EF Zeiss CP.2s definitely have that issue though. I would love to see a locking EF mount on future releases though as I think this would solve that specific issue totally! @JacobVossFilms
@JacobVossFilms 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Hope you found this helpful As far as lens mounts go, the PL mount is fantastic and definitely the current cinema standard so if you're going into mostly productions with multiple people I would highly recommend that but for solo shooters/one man band types it gets more complicated because it can't transmit any data so the autofocus is out the window. Honestly, I think my favorite systems right now are the RF (20mm flange) or E Mount (18mm flange) because you can just adapt so much to both. The RF also has a good amount of industry support already so I'm thinking that one of the better options now is to go with a system that either has interchangeable lens mounts or an RF mount that then you can add a locking mount (say EF) to with things like the Kipper-tie adapter. E mount is also great especially for adapting lenses although it tends to have less industry support because of it being mostly proprietary to Sony bodies.

I have been inclined to invest in the 6K Pro with a lineup of cinema lenses, but simply because of the mount, I am still not making this step as it may be restraining me too much for the future of cinema cameras. Interesting video! A few weeks ago, with a friend we were testing a Tokina Cinema ATX 11mm-20mm T2.9 lenses with a Komodo and a BMPCC 6K Pro. In both cameras the the lenses tend to jump when focusing with a Nucleus Nano. When looking carefully found that te lock system on both, EF mounts, was secured by a little pin that get into a hole of all EF lenses. This hole, for some reasons are bigger between each lenses manufacturer. And there is where actually the problem is. With Komodo, the moving lenses issue were more notable because there are two pin lock systems working, the RF and EF. I think that it can be fixed drooping just a little drop of silicone into lenses hole or something similar so pin of gets tighter. Maybe something else that I haven't think about it that can fix this problem.

So even the Komodo has this issue with EF?
@JacobVossFilms

The Komodo uses RF, so it has a shorter flange distance which means you can adapt a lot of different lens mounts to it. If you get the Komodo and a locking EF adapter (such as the one from KipperTie) you’re good because it 1) locks to a cage so the RF mount doesn’t spin and 2) the EF amount is a locking friction based version which means it has a part that tightens down on the EF mount itself effectively locking the mount in with friction instead of just a pin and spring (that normal EF mounts use)

Addon accessories as options I.e ( 1)12G - SDI & XLR and HDMI ports. (2)Wireless Monitor that can control the Cam & use for focus pulling, (3)Dual USB C for power & Data addon. the port could even offer Dual Recording for back up option, whilst the one on the camera can be for power 45/60 or 100Watts USB C port, and (4) A place to mount the SSD. (5) interchangeable mount panels. (6) can clip on V mount battery to the back of it. option the addon could come in at an Extra £2000 for the Bolton Unit. the camera does not ned to use a Magnesium body an Aluminium one would be fine Magnesium is harder to machine with out it coughing fire this is the reason my cameras with Magnesium body are more expensive even magnesium alloy can still be hard to machine. Full package priced at £6000 for the 8K and £5000 for the 6K version This could potentially be an URSA or Pocket modular line up for PROs & Cinematographers.

I think you should be okay with them if you've already ordered them and have a primary camera you're using that works with them but I have definitely regretted getting a set of EF cinema lenses as they don't fit easily on most rental packages I get. EF is a good mount for lenses as it can be adapted to a lot so even if it doesn't work natively, there's a good chance that you can adapt it to a lot of packages (not to PL camera packages though unfortunately). If your looking for the most adaptable, the PL would probably be it on the mid to high end but EF isn't too far behind. Just try to get locking ef adapters for the camera packages you're looking at getting. Also, I think that cube shape idea is fantastic, maybe a komodo-esque version (but with built in NDs). The addon options would be great too as in the past BM hasn't really been very modular so I think this could be a good option to allow different shooters to rig it out in different ways without adding a ton of bulk. The interchangeable lens mount would be a blessing. I hope BM listens to us

CP.3s are decent lenses that you can grow with - I think I’d do the wooden camera PL Mount Mod for the Blackmagic Pocket 6K Pro and get a PL set of CP.3s that way you can rent them out for other cinema jobs too. The PL will also make them easier lenses to grow with. Definitely would recommend the CP.3s over the CP.2s though as they’re creamier and have a more filmic quality in contrast (I like their look a lot more)

Nice Video, but I have a question now. I have my 6k Pro, RS3 Pro and the rig now at home for few days and watching a lot of videos to get the best out of the cam. Is it really worth it to spend about 500€ to PL Mount from Wooden Camera? Is the „only“ benefit to get not this jittery at back focus which maybe can fixed in post? Is the lens better locked in pl mount? Maybe someone can give me some advises 😊
@JacobVossFilms
@JacobVossFilms Жыл бұрын
Thanks! Lens is definitely better locked in with PL. Does help the spin issue which would take quite a bit of work to get out in post. You could also just lock in the lens with a lens support if you’re looking for a more budget option, that helps the issue for cheaper but not going to get better than PL. PL is the professional standard for a reason. If you don’t use a follow focus or focus motor though I wouldn’t worry about the issue, really mostly a problem if you’re using either of those things

Unfortunately thats not possible, the flange distance of RF is shorter than that of EF so that makes an EF body to RF lens adapter impossible. @TheJ_G
@TheJ_G 9 ай бұрын
I really hope Blackmagic chooses a different mirrorless mount besides RF. There have been some rumors of them going with L-mount and I think that would be a better fit. L-mount is a fantastic mount system, open to third party lenses, EF and PL, aligned with some great brands like Sigma, works wonderfully with vintage lenses, m-mount lenses, as well as more robust Leica SL options. Panasonic has also done an incredible job releasing high quality lenses just as good as anything canon has produced on the RF mount, that cater to the needs of professional video shooters and not just photographers. L-Mount is a no brainer if you ask me. It’s time for canon to feel a little pressure to play ball with the growing needs of their customers. And if it came down to something like RF or E, I’d rather it be E mount. Or hell, even X-mount would be an interesting turn of events if they’re planning to stay in the s35 market. Canon isn’t the only company that produces excellent lenses, but they’re the only company that’s actively restricting what their customers can use on their mount.

@JacobVossFilms
@JacobVossFilms 10 ай бұрын
The issue has nothing to do with the smoothness of the ring unfortunately it’s ultimately about using a motorized follow focus and the mount not being friction based. There will always unfortunately be a chance for this issue to be a problem because of the lack of a locking mount.

This mount debacle is exactly why BM appellation of "pro" camera is questionable. Speaking of pro, I wish camera manufactures would adopt DisplayPort 2.1 into their cameras rather the HDMI. For one, its completely comparable with other ports (incl. HDMI) with the use of a simple adapter. And second, its a more professional connector due to its locking pin. So it won't pull out like the consumer HDMI will. BTW, did I mention its less expensive to integrate and has a far greater bandwidth and higher data transfer rate than HDMI 2.1. So with all the good and virtually no bad at lower cost, why aren't camera and computer manufacturers not jumping on this concept? I wish I knew. One more thing, when choosing any port, whether HDMI or DP always be aware of the version since that makes big difference is capability and performance. For some reason, the industry never prints the version on the port or even in the specifications.

Yeah there isn’t a great way to do that - there are EF to PL adapters but they tend to mess with backfocus and aren’t supported on a ton of lenses. With CP. 2s you can actually swap the mounts on the lens themselves. If you don’t want to buy a bunch of CP.2 EF mounts though you can also just swap the lens mount on the BMPCC but it takes a bit of elbow grease and you can only do it a few number of times before you risk damaging the camera. I have an EF set of CP. 2s myself so that’s what my solution is and I use a lens support to mitigate the rotation.

Been using the bmpcc 6k with the cn-e, cp2 and 3 series, Orion anamorphic and Angenieux zoom lenses for a year and getting no issues whatsoever, with gorgeous results in Q0 braw compression especially. This camera is a beast and kills it for that price range, with powerful post production tools readily available. Itt takes the same amount of time to change lenses on a bmpcc or a phantom, with 15cm rods and a baseplate to hold the focus gear, this is not a problem. If you need a PL mount, then you're using supreme or ultra primes or any other lenses that already put you on a budget that allows you to get an Alexa, Venice or a Monstro for commercial work, so this is not a problem really.

I think you missed the lens rotation test but glad you're not having an issue! I have been having the lens rotation issue when not using a lens support which is why I made the video - but that's the core of the issue, some lenses have an issue and others don't. Even lenses that are the same brand and model have slightly different tolerances and because this doesn't use a friction based mount like the PL, its not adjustable. I think the camera is fantastic and the color science and data compressions are awesome (leave you with so much data for grading flexibility) but the mount for me at least leaves a lot to be desired - not to mention you can't adapt much to it with the long flange distance. But if its working for you, all the more power to you! I'm happy you're not having an issue with it :)

@@JacobVossFilms honestly man I've been experiencing no issues with the mount, both outdoors and in studio, they grip firmly, I use baseplates for heavy zooms, I really think this camera deserves more good press for what it provides at this price. Again, if you just use it for entry budget films, even for legit clients, cine lenses are a great go to in my experience, then for higher budgets for sure go with the Arri and it goes so smooth but I reckon it's more of a solution for long form fiction where you need a sturdy body for rougher conditions
@JacobVossFilms
@JacobVossFilms 2 жыл бұрын
@@mbreliere Definitely behind you there - I want this camera to get good press too but I also want the next model to be even better :) So my main goal for this video was to get some traction and hopefully bring some of these issue to blackmagics attention. As someone who pulls focus often though, the lens rotation issue has been something I've been noticing on certain lenses when using a FIZ - its not Blackmagics fault but just that these mounts weren't meant for slightly torque-y motors (or motors at all) to be mounted against them so it presents a unique issue. Even on the lowest torque settings on a few FIZ models its still jumps. I'm just trying to get this in front of BM so that the next model can perhaps come with a locking EF or another solution. Again, love the camera and it can do so much, but I want the next model to improve and be even better for the next gen of filmmakers - lol I remember shooting on the 60D back in the day so we've definitely come a longgg way

@JacobVossFilms
@JacobVossFilms 2 жыл бұрын
I think I agree with you - the strong bit depth and color science on the BMPCC 6K Pro absolutely mean it is possible to use as an A-Cam, my point was mainly that it most likely won't be chosen as an A-cam on many productions because of the formfactor (as well as lens mount). It makes it very wonky to rig out although it can be done. I will say though, lens supports are somewhat a pain if you're using prime lenses, not that big of a deal for zooms though. I'm very sensitive to anything that slows down the lens changing process as an AC 😅

I mean, anything can be an A camera if you think about it. That doesn't mean the camera is well optimised for that role.

Most PL mounts do indeed transfer data but it’s never gonna be for autofocus. The data That a PL mounts gives you is metadata from certain lenses with LDS built in
@JacobVossFilms
@JacobVossFilms 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah misspoke on that one - On some modern PL mounts and lenses data does get transferred through with the LDS - I wouldn’t go as far to say most though - at least not yet. But being the video focuses on BMPCC, such a consumer facing camera, I figured I should highlight that the lens mount won’t ever be able to add a feature like autofocus as some might hope.

I’m assuming you’re talking about the lens rotation issue and not the other issues discussed but it depends on the brand of lens - certain brands have the issue, some don’t - that’s the downside of non-locking lens mounts. Theyre not adjustable for different lens manufacturing tolerances (where as locking EF and PL mounts can be tightened to varying degree regardless of the manufacturing tolerance and make for a rock solid mount).
@nicolapaoli4561

They will never abandone EF for RF. It would be a suicide for Blackmagic, especially when Canon fights against third party lenses and adaptors RF implementations in order to keep their RF lenses price as high as possible. Because of this, I really think that RF will never be as successfull as EF or PL have been.

@JacobVossFilms
@JacobVossFilms 2 жыл бұрын
I don’t think this is correct as Red is using this mount currently - do you have a source? After a bit of research, it looks like Canon doesn't license any of their lens mounts however, brands and manufacturers have to reverse engineer them to make products, mounts and adapters that are compatible. This is definitely bizarre but, considering Red already did this, I am still optimistic about the future!
@IndioA
@IndioA 2 жыл бұрын
@@JacobVossFilms red gets the RF mount as a cross license for internal RAW recording by canon. the EF mount license ended in 2013, opening the door for BMD to bring the original BMPCC with EF mount to market. the license for the RF mount expires in 2028, I believe, allowing other manufacturers to use it. Sony's e-mount is also not licensable and the only option BMD would have would be to join leica's alliance to use the L-mount.

I have a bmpcc 4k with a metabones ultra M4/3 to Pl mount. The metabones screws into the cage, and so my cp2s mount rock solid on the pl mount. I still use a front lens support but it doesn’t screw on to the lens, so changing lenses is quick and easy.

1:22 “transmitting data is impossible” is not true actually. The Cooke “i” standard transmits a lot of data on active PL mounts (found on Alexa, Venice and many other cameras with active PL mounts): focal length, focus distance, stop (with 10th measurements between stops). Not only Cooke has lenses like this, there are others as well. Not the standard but increasingly common among professional cinema lenses. I’m a 1st AC so I see and use hundreds of Cine lenses a year that cost more than everything I own 🤣 it’s a really cool system!
@JacobVossFilms
@JacobVossFilms 2 жыл бұрын
Slight correction - Said Autofocus was basically impossible… which it is but you definitely have a valid point. What I meant was that there are no electronic motors in the lens to provide the ability to autofocus. Yes some meta data can get transmitted through on certain brands but for the vast majority of the audience of this video, they probably won’t come into contact with that system in the immediate future. It is really cool though!

I think you’re forgetting the point of the 6K pro. It’s a consumer friendly cinema camera at a price range reasonable for the average Joe. At the price point compared to any other cinema camera and the overall image quality I feel there’s no comparison. I don’t think it’s BlackMagics intention for this to be an industry standard camera, it’s for indie filmmakers. The EF mount gives filmmakers a huge variety of cheap lens options to choose from, whereas the mounts you mention also comes with a huge price bump in lens cost to suit. Saying the camera can’t be used as an A camera is too generalised a statement and completely disregards the camera and users ability to make a good film. See people that have made films on iPhones - a camera is just a tool. I assume you’re implying it can’t be used on ‘Hollywood level productions’, but again, the camera isn’t made for those people.
@JacobVossFilms
@JacobVossFilms 2 жыл бұрын
The first point of the video was to add a locking mount - which isn’t that costly and would hugely improve the design with the lens rotation issue. I’m confused why people get so defensive over a product that the company is looking to improve with every revision. Yes, I get that it’s a consumer camera but if we said, good enough with every product we’d never improve anything. In fact, this camera having 6k would be seen as totally ridiculous. It’s important to keep looking at how a product can improve and have a discussion on that rather than attacking the person making the criticism because it’s “good enough”. I would argue that Blackmagic themselves are actually looking to push the envelope in terms of film technology development on the consumer level and not just say “good enough”

@@JacobVossFilms I’m not getting defensive, I’m simply pointing out the other side of the coin here. I appreciate your passion for changes you’d like to see made, I’m just pointing out some cons of what you’re saying from my point of view. I respect the points you’re making, but to me the camera is essentially a glorified DSLR, suited specifically for film. So I get the desire to use hefty cinema lenses on it because they call it a ‘cinema camera’ but if those are the sort of lenses you want to shoot on then perhaps it’s simply not the camera to use. Again it’s about right tools for the job. Obviously you know what you’re talking about way more than me, but that’s why I like BlackMagic because they make their cameras accessible to someone at an entry level so EF seems like the option best suited for them at this point in time. It’s only inevitable they will make improvements and changes that I too hope to see, and their track record makes it seem inevitable that their improvements will be worthy ones.

While I agree with you that looking for the needs of production is paramount having a lens wiggle rotationally on a mount would affect every set, and thus make it a valid point of concern to discuss. Every product has areas it could improve and I think it’s important to discuss so the next one is better :)

I hate PL mounts, they are really hard to get lens on and off quickly, sometimes it would get stuck for and almost impossible to remove the lens. I happily converted my lenses from PL to EF (DZOFilm Pictor) and I even changed my ursa mini pro 12 from PL to EF mount and there are no issues with stability or any issues to get the lenses really quickly on and off. With EF lenses sits tight and I've never had any issues with it. With PL mount one broke for me, with hwo impossible they were to easily mount and dissmount lenses and it took me 3-4 minutes to change a lens, I would get tired after 1-2 minutes lens not comming of PL mount and had to rest for 1-2 minutes before I could try again. That's my two cents... I'll personally stay away from PL mounts, they are not all they are cranked to be...

Interesting pretext, however BMPCC 6K Pro is not intended to emulate Hollywood's cinema exclusive and ridiculously expensive camera and lens form factors. This camera disrupts all of their proprietary exclusive production ecosystem with an image that transcends the limits of what an independent filmmaker could produce few short years ago. If a DP can get a good lens on this camera the goal is achieved.
@JacobVossFilms
@JacobVossFilms 2 жыл бұрын
Totally, we've come a huge way however my point with the PL lens mount wasn't to say this camera should use that mount (I actually think it's not flexible enough for most filmmakers with this camera) but instead to say that we should be looking at locking mount versions of mounts Blackmagic already uses. I think these are critical as if you want to use cinema lenses on this cinema camera as it stands, due to the manufacturing tolerances of the EF mount, the image actually shifts when using a follow focus. I just wanted to put down a base as to where the locking technology came from with the PL mount discussion and perhaps inform some that are interested in what the lens standards in hollywood and indie film look like today. I agree this camera disrupts a lot of what is expected on entry level cinema cameras today however, I think its important to keep in mind that we should still discuss areas it lacks so that Blackmagic can improve in the future

Wow, theres some really cool stuff in here - I would absolutely love the cube design w/ internal NDs, RF lens mount - also a FF option would be really cool. Not sure they would be able to fit all of this for $2k but I would be 100% in line to buy two of these asap if they ever did! Also I'm curious, the micro adjustable alignment of the sensor to the lens plane - could you expand more on that? I'd love to hear more about it cause I've never heard of something like that
