The problem with using a Grigri as a descender

The Grigri is an attended belay, assisted braking device that is often misused as a self-belay descender by Residential Rope Access workers and even some companies who train them.

Use one of the holes in the metal plate of the Grigri and feed a small cord through it to fix it on your Harness to avoid it dropping. Use a prusik additionall (as you'd do with other belay devices) to descend - maybe harder to use, but completely fail safe for no hand safety 😂

I use mine as an assist in descending and it works well, I would not recommend it for repelling especially not in combo with a dynamic rope.

Generally speaking all kind of risky activity is for skilled, properly trained people. Not for casual tourists. And if that happens (casual tourists doing stupid things) then it called Natural Selection.

you should try the grigri+, only downside to it is the fact you need to disconnect to load rope. the plus side? half the price.

Sounds about as silly as: "you should try to use a plastic garbage bag to transport gasoline because it holds a lot of liquid and it is waaaaaay cheaper than a TXDOT approved gas can."

I hear ya@@eatmyskitle however, I wouldn't consider it wise to make any suggestion that conflicts with the gear manufacturer, OSHA & ANSI with regards to Fall Protection however, in this country you are certainly free to speak your mind. As a Rope Access Training Provider and Equipment Dealer we must be hypervigilant about what is promoted on our channel. Unfortunately Gravity is one rough ole boy who plays by his own set of rules...and he could care less about Political Correctness, DEI or your feelings.

I’m sorry.. this’s ridiculous. I’ve been doing rope access work for over a decade and have used all forms of the grigri. Sure.. there’s much better options out there, but for the price it’s a great option for those who know what they’re doing and build in a redundancy (like everyone should). If you’re dropping a descender at hight you shouldn’t be on a rope in the first place.

I agree, you CAN use a Grigri as a descender just as you CAN use a Walmart sack to transport gasoline. BOTH will get the job done however, the consequences for even the slightest mistake can result in catastrophe. Petzl (the manufacturer) does not condone the use of the Grigri as a descender. Its official capacity is an assisted braking attended belay device (i.e. Person on the ground / Belayer, using it to secure a Climber.) Furthermore, it is a violation of OSHA regulations as well as ANSI standards to use any fall protection device in a manner which it was not intended.

If you're planning on relying on your backup, you shouldn't be on a rope in the first place. It's only a backup if your primary option is so safe that you won't need the backup under any foreseeable circumstance. If you know you might need your backup, it's not a backup, it's a primary option that you have no backup for. Also, falling into your backup is likely going to need a rescue, costing you more than a rig ever would have compared to the grigri.

@@mdbernsten I don’t know about “millions” but definitely many people for sure are indeed using this tool as a descender. That doesn’t change the disturbing fact that: 1. The Grigri is vulnerable to panic grip. 2. It is not designed by the manufacturer to be used as a descender.
