Podcast is Called : ASN Humans Are Space Orcs , HFY and other stories
--------------
This Story is Classified as HFY or Humanity Feck, Yea , but what does the Mean?
-------------
HFY is a story/series that takes a “human element” in either humanity or an “other” (race/species or object) that exists in a “setting” (future or other world/universe) with varying levels of culture, technology, society and history that help show in some shape or form the potential good or bad for humanity’s race/culture. In These stories Humans are often referred to as Human, Humanity, Deathworlder, Hellwolder in reference to the human planet of origin , Earth. This planet is seen by most of the universe as a place where only death and chaos can survive.
-------------
Taken from the FAQ of the r/HFY subreddit.
Humans Are Space Orcs (HASO) or Humans Are (Fantasy Race) Are used as a guide when writing.
In these Stories we normally View humans like the other races view orcs in a Fantasy Novel. We (Humans) share the same characteristics and personalities as orcs. Humans are normally treated as the outsiders and barbarians. Humans tend to be underestimated as well in these stories. Unlike Humanity Feck Yea , these don't always put a positive spin on humans\humanity sometimes looking at the darker side of human and humanity from the perspective of aliens.

An excellent way to show badassery without any asskicking. She shows here that if she is of a mind to be, she would be far more dangerous than most traditional violence prone ass kickers. They may be better in a fight but if she strikes you won't see it coming and it will be brutal. excellent story and some top notch character writing.

Actually, I like the idea of a "Death World" rating system being the statistical average time it would take for some hazard endemic to that world would cause grievous injury or death. In this case it would the an inverse scale where the smaller the number the more hazardous it is. It of course would have to be calculated for each species individually.
@ufoe20011
@ufoe20011 8 ай бұрын
thats why it is a two part systm. first number is the number of threats. predatory animals, weather, earthquakes, plants, viruses bacteria, asteroids. this is usually broken down in to a 1 to 5 scale each number represents a threat. so a class 2 would have 2 of those threats. then a letter to represent the threat levl. example a migratetion of neurotoxin snails would be a class1c world. 1 major threat but well known and easy to avoid. earth with the sheer number of threats is a class 5z this is due to the sheer number of threats and the ease at which they can kill and how hard some are to detect and avoid.

I wonder how these HFY storytellers resist the urge to overly americanize their aliens. The motivations, the ideals, the body language, even the taboos, often just doesn't seem convincingly alien.

A new perspective after reading some of these comments, using aliens to tell human stories, I kind of get it. Just that I have a craving for the truly alien, whereby these kind of humanized aliens tend to fall short.

@sleddog3092
@sleddog3092 8 ай бұрын
Well, I wrote this to do a few things. One, it's in defense of the US. I acknowledge it's problembs but it has reasons and justifications. We are the only nation to have fought a war to end slavery for example. Two, I'm celebrating women in a real way. I'm not pandering to them or anything like that. I acknowledge their real strengths. Strengths my wife has shown to make a bad situation constructive. three, I fear a war. It's a fear I'm sure we are all feeling right now. We might be at the edge of another world war. I know that in the story, humanity (representing america and the Western world) will win whether they're on the right side or not, but in reality, I don't know if we will win. We have so much conflict from within and from outside our boarders, I have no idea if we will be a country anymore. And fourth, we need to stop fighting from within and hear each other out. People are too quick to take sides. I gave an example of a powerful character that shows what strength there is in not picking sides, but hearing your fellow man out. Rather than debating or trading blows over it Either way, I'm glad you liked the story.

@@sleddog3092 The British Empire was enforcing an ocean embargo on slavery long before the US ever considered stopping it. In some ways the US "war of independence" was motivated by the early steps of Empire at large abolishing slavery and what would become the US not wanting to loose their primary economic engine, as much as it was a tax revolt.
@sleddog3092
@sleddog3092 8 ай бұрын
@ckl9390 the founding fathers wanted to end slavery. They said it was going to be phased out over time. Just took longer than they expected and took a war. The founding fathers even asked the king if they could end slavery and he said, "Nope. We have slaves so you will to" The tax was likely a tax on the rich because only the Rick could afford slaves. It wasn't as economically smart as you would think owning galaxy slaves. Slaves don't work as hard as people who want to be there. Thank you for the interesting point though. I actually had to look into that when you said that. Learn something new every day

@@sleddog3092 At the time of the Colonial Revolutionary War, there were entire battalions of black Loyalists (loyal to the Crown) who, even though they lost, were granted land in Nova Scotia as free men. Significant portions of the British Empire (including Canada) already had various restrictions on slavery and were well on the way towards abolition Empire wide.
@sleddog3092
@sleddog3092 8 ай бұрын
@ckl9390 thats good. Slavery was on its way out in most of the Western world until technology caught up and made sub-par labor into something economically feasible again. (The cotton Jin), but while the rest of the world kept slaves after that point, America kept trying to press forward until a war was fought. Which justifies the statement I made in the story, but I also understand that means a war was fought to keep slavery. The title of the story is "The Problems with Humanity," so there are plenty. There are also perspectives that change the lighting on some of these problems, but not all. As an American, I take pride in the fact that, though the Civil War was not only about slavery, in fact much more, we are so anti-slavery that we fought a war to end it. That said, we still have slaves in China and the Middle East. Arguably more slaves exist now than at the time of the American Civil War. The word Unik came from the way they mutilated slaves in the Middle East, which is worse treatment than any American slave. So, I was also trying to bring awareness to that. The fact slaves still exist. We act like it's over and it isn't Either way, great conversation to have. Thank you again.
