i have my mother's soroban that she used to do all the household accounting when i was growing up. She could do it faster than i could with a calculator. Apparently she was taught how to use the soroban in 2nd grade - having learnt times tables in the 1st - and got in trouble because she'd do the calculations in her head and then just set the soroban up with the answer. i've always found the object itself fascinating, the sound and feel of it, her running her finger across them to clear it (no fancy levers or plastic or metal in hers, though it looks very similar to these). i've never understood why US schools don't use these more as manipulatives.

Are many people really buying abacuses in 2023? There's also something delightfully anachronistic about a CNC router making abacuses. They're literally being made by computer, the very thing that replaced them.

These Japanese abacuses are really nice. In general, Asian philosophy is based on rectangular group formation; as opposed to Western philosophy which is based on circular group formation. That’s why Western logic systems use the Venn diagram. In Japan, tatami mats are a symbol of “space” divided into sections. Tatami lines are derived from Japan’s Chinese roots. Some sections are more important than others. So the abacus is related to the idea of using straight lines to represent values; and then groups. Followed by curves used to represent values and groups in a different way. Japanese temples have both curves and lines which point to sections of the sky to form star groups. But don’t ask for architectural drawings, those are a state secret! There aren’t any video games which allow kids to use an abacus to assign values. Kids are only allowed to “respond” but never to express. An abacus could have beads painted with different colors, so that kids add and subtract emotions.

What a shit are you talking about? The origins of the abacus is not known. But it was widely used in Europe as well. I have an abacus from the Soviet period (Russia). It was widely used in the Near East, too. So, go to hell with your silly “explanation”.
