I'm a retired elementary art teacher. Making art for children is about joy, period. The impossibly high standards some adults place on art is "unrealistic" and counterproductive. If we placed these standards on everything, we'd never learn to drive or cook or sew or.... AND we'd rob ourselves of the joy of discovery.

Your process is so inspiring to me. The freedom to jump off of the capitalist idea that everything needs to be for sale. To take time to learn and grow. Thank you for sharing that with all of us.

Hi Sandi, I loved the painting of the lake, the one with the little girl. I like that she's transparent. You picked up on her feelings of feeling invisible by her dad, which is sad but you caught it. I would frame that painting just as it is. Artist are empathic and pick up on things others don't, and it showed in your painting. I love it and the feelings that go with it. As for process, everything in life is a process. Creating art takes thought, even the great artist of old had a process, we just didn't see it. We see the finished work. Museums have taken X-rays of famous painters and found different scenes or changes in faces, like Leonardo DaVinci's Mona Lisa. So who ever said what they said, it was out of ignorance and lack of artistic knowledge. You're doing a great job in your process. I love when you paint. Thank you again for sharing.

I've observed so many artist's all over the innernet looking for freedom, spontaneity and joy in their work after years of trying to get their art look like the masters of old. You are one of the docking stations such artists are lucky to land on for refreshment. Keep doing what you're doing girl.

Just love this one, Sandi! You do us all such a service by continually shining a light on process. Process is accepted as a fundamental part of most other professions. Somehow there's presumption of magic or born-with-it talent or inspiration when it comes to making art...instead of time, experimentation, piles of sketches, do-overs, messy messes and so much hard work!

I find it interesting that you painted the young girl body invisible🤔 you shared with us how her father was on the phone and wasn't paying attention to her. Thanks for your thoughts... People (who aren't artists) often have weird assumptions. I used to have to tell someone (formerly) in my life that if they were all masterpieces, then none of them would really be. By its very definition, a masterpiece stands out from the others. ;-)

Hi Sandi I really appreciate your sketches and love the looseness and freedom you have in your sketchbooks - that’s what they are for!! I went to art college briefly when I was younger and sketch books are for experimentation and exploration . This is why I hate when people look at my sketchbooks who aren’t ‘artistic’ I have been mocked for my work and have been upset but now couldn’t give a damn what others think ! I can draw really well but this is not the point of a sketchbook- You remain inspirational to me 💕

You have taught me sooo much by sharing your process: the doing; the playfulness; the experimentation; the letting go of perfection and the embracing of mistakes. I get an idea or get interested in something and I just go for it . And it is amazing to me what results - often it is a complete surprise. I have finally undertaken the importance of journaling and revisiting past work and exploring them all over again . I stumbled upon a video of yours a few months ago. And I am just loving your content. I have been drawing and painting off (mostly off) and on my whole life. Miss Sandi! Not going to lie; I was SO confused by the opening part of your video. Who in their right mind would criticize an artist's SKETCHES as not being "good enough"? I suppose it is because of the prevailing genre of "CalArts sketchbook tours" here on KZfaq; Chroma Moma did a video a while back on those and how they sort of give people the unreasonable expectation that every page in a sketchbook should be a finished work of art. Which, even for me, someone who considers herself largely a "sketchbook artist," is absolute crazy-talk! Having said that, I honestly am a huge fan of your sketchbooks and would happily order a copy if you published one like how David Hockney does. The artist's process is just as much a work of art as their final output, and to me, seeing your sketches and how your style and colour sense has evolved from your earlier work is SO inspiring to me. I used to be so precious with my sketchbooks, with my work in general. Because of you, now I just play, and my art has improved because of it! Not only that, but I play with so many mediums now: waterbased acrylics, chalk pastels, oil pastels, coloured pencils...you name it, and I've probably bought and tried it because of your videos! (I'm even waiting on an order of water-soluble oils now, since I am in love with the paint quality of your earlier oil work.) All this to say...THANK YOU for sharing your art and your process! It's helped me SO MUCH as someone who only started making art eight months ago, and who has used art largely as a means to keep going after a difficult year of health scares, heartbreaks, and other drama that is not worth getting into. You mentioned that sometimes folks look at artists and think it's all about creating the finished pieces (paraphrasing because I'm too lazy to check for the word-for-word, lol... :D) -- and I think that's true. I also think that perception is underscored by how social media curation seems to show only these beautiful, well-composed sketchbooks that look finished, too. If someone sees those, over and over and over, it's understandable that they'd come to the conclusion that "real artists" only make finished work...when that's very much not the case. I really appreciate seeing your WHOLE process, from the first markmaking explorations to the multiple iterations to the canvases they sometimes become. Thank you for being real and honest and open.

Sandy that was so much fun to watch. I have a tendency to go for a masterpiece but you have changed me. I came across some sketches done in a life drawing class yesterday. I haven’t seen them in years. The sketches I loved the best were the fast timed sketches and the gestural sketches. They were so much livelier than the ones that I spent more time on. It really hit home with me. Seeing your video today has reinforced it and now I am going to try to have more fun and work with more movement and markings. ❤️

I appreciate your process, my process is similar and quite often even my doodles end up being inserted into my sketch books. I am older and I just do this for me. Most people do not get it. I was an accomplished and published doll artist and most people did not get that either. lol For me it is about finding excitement, peace and enjoyment in my work.

I finished watching all of your videos earlier this week and was so excited today when I realized it was Friday and there would be a new one. Watching how your art evolved through the years in the videos and all the parts of the process that you have shared has been so inspiring. I have been sketching and painting this week and opened paints that were still sitting new in the box waiting for me. After watching me for a day or so my boys have also started drawing and painting more and it has been so great to watch them and create with them. My oldest even did a painting of one of his paintings, adding to it and practicing his process, and I told him that is just what Ms. Sandi does. We watched your video about how to draw faces together and he loved it and has felt much more comfortable drawing faces. Sandi, I just love seeing your work evolve over the days, months, years. It’s very encouraging. As far as making “bad art” (lol, I use that term broadly and loosely), the really talented artists that I follow are very open about making bad art and are unashamed to admit that they make a lot of it. Because that’s part of staying in the process of making art. I also interpret them to be saying that art involves a fair amount of experimentation; sometimes that’s magical, sometimes not. But they are continuing to keep at it because it’s part of evolving as an artist. I do not think that you make “bad art”, and i use that term merely in reference to the remarks of your commenters. Those of us that are IN IT, get you and understand perfectly well what you are doing. That being said, I appreciate your glass-half-full perspective on this type of situation that can be very painful for creators. 💗

I used to worry someone seeing my sketchbooks would think it was a different artist nearly every page but I don’t care anymore. When I’m the most free I’m the most happy with the result. 19:50 I have the same feeling when I go some place new to draw. It’s almost as if I am too overwhelmed by all the information I am receiving and absorbing as well as my emotional response to it all. It’s like trying to laugh or cry and talk at the same time. Words just don’t come out the right way. Same with trying to capture a place you’re seeing the first time. But, in spite of your not “feeling” it I think the final product is very promising. I love the pops of red and orange here and there and would love to see the little girl glowing like a fire. The eye movement you’ve created here is like a ballet performance. The tree in the middle offers a place of rest while everything else is in constant motion. I would also love to see this on a big canvas.

My husband and I have conversations about process and form all the time. He is a first-wave punk musician and I am a mixed media artist. Sure, we both know the proper "instructed" ways to do what we do best, but part of the art life, and the punk rock life, is knowing what and where to "throw it away" a little. Our house together is a cacophony of instruments, art supplies and projects in every stage of completion. Only an artist would get it. ;) Thank you, Sandi, for being you, and for continuing to show how you let loose and just let art be what it needs to be. You totally get it.

I agree with the other comments, you are so generous about your process, and that is a show of greatness too. I think there are also artists who hide their process, make it look more mystical than it is. I love the vidoes where you do big still nature setups, loved the idea of glass fruit, colorfull textiles etc. I fell in love with your process. And I learn a lot every time I watch your process videos. I'm more representational artist but there is always the need to simplify things and uncover the essence. Also love your play with textures, marks and colors. Just wanted to share the support 😀

Your process is similar to an academic process. One can't write a paper for example without research. Your process is your research. Without it pieces are missed or in the wrong place etc. I understand completely 😊 I was like what, why do yellow jackets hurt? You mean the bug type 🤣 I agree they are the worst, but boy did I laughahen I realised you didn't mean a rain coat or something. 😂 Oh I wanted to tell you, because no one I know will understand my joy, I made my first sketch from a sketch the other day 😄 I had a graphite pencil sketch that had rubbed off on the next page so it was mirrored and I use coloured pencil te sketch it again. That was so fun. It turned out the same but so different. Thought you'd appreciate my happy clap after I was done 😊

Sandi, I am just now realizing that what attracts me most to your work is YOUR TREES, ta da! Whether full and heady, or bare and dormant, they always have such a proud stance about them and to me they are the prime characters in your landscapes. Personally, I have found that when I take landscape abstraction to its (my) limits, it is no longer pleasing me. I think I like to have a little representation sneak in. How do you feel?

I love the one with the tree in the middle with the deep shadows, it’s so atmospheric I can see why it makes you happy!☺️ I think having the tree in the middle works really well because it’s as though you can see the views to the left and right, it gives you a sense of being there and I love that!

Before I arted no thought was given to the artist - just my knee jerk response to a work. Lol, the shallow end was so cool back then. My inconsiderate comments then may have been frustration from a lack of understanding. Thanks to brave and patient artists over time understanding became available. @Sandi Hester is def making understanding available to a world of inconsiderate frustrated art viewers that may need more time before they can enjoy understanding. Oh my, while I have to confess: I have on very rare occasions, 2 or 3 times, in years of watching YT, said something on the negative side in comments…while also saying something positive in the same comment bc I felt bad about saying anything negative. But it’s hard for me to imagine commenting negatively about someone’s personal artwork. “Is that your best work?” Wow, that seems to be a really mean or snotty question that’s not really a question, but a rude comment. I’m sorry that you even have to read comments on your work like this when you share so much of yourself so generously, so freely, and quite personally. Really, whenever I don’t like, enjoy or understand what someone’s doing or not doing, I will often just go “next” and find something else to watch….and there’s a LOT to choose from on YT or from streaming or cable lineup. So Sandi, so many people obviously love 💗 what you’re doing, and I do too. My “process” and my artwork is not like yours, but I still enjoy tuning in to what you’re doing bc I enjoy the qualities of “you.” Honestly, that’s why I subscribe faithfully watch YT creators like you a lot. Of course I want information, entertainment, inspiration or instruction or ideas 💡 but if I don’t get or take to the personality of the person presenting all those things, it’s not likely gonna be a “go” for me. I am sick and hadn't really noticed that it was friday, so when your video suddenly popped up it was the best surprise EVER 😃 I felt the urge to do the biggest happytappy dance, but because I had no enery, I did it on the couch ( a "pillow" of tissue paper in each hand served as pom-poms to spice it up as much as possible...😳) I really LOVE the sketch from that "new" lake you went to 😍 The shadows almost made me feel how hot it was that day (it might just be my fever though 😜) Anyhow, I'm so glad you don't care about those bad comments. The Internet trolls probably try to enjoy the process of writing nasty comments while they hide behind a fake profile... BRAVE 👎 You just keep doing your thing, it's so unique and amazing 👏 🥰

I love the paintings from the new lake. The colours are wonderful. And yes, I so agree. There are so many pieces that are just play, experiment, practice. And I think that's the way it should be. Baseball players have to practice and there is so much more time in practice than in the actual game. I'm not sure why people don't think that artists need practice, too.

Hi Sandy! I recently have gone back to painting after about 2 years of getting mad at my sketching and painting. I was getting angry at my art and throwing them in the trash. I know this sounds childish but I sometimes stomped on them before I winged them wildly into the trash can. Now I have started back up because of watching your videos. You've taught me not to give up hope. If I mess up I just think to myself "What would Sandy do?" Now I stay calm and remember your advice. Thank you for all your encouragement and just being you. I never got to go to art school but you're my favorite teacher. So I continue on and when faced with serious painting problem I never give up. I just ask myself "What would Sandy do?" I then give myself the confidence and tenacity to keep going. I will never give up. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Love and hugs.

Sandi I am a huge fan of your work and love, your videos. Art is a process for each of us that is approached differently by every individual. There should be no judgement, rather acceptance. You are an inspiration! So many people don’t even try new mediums because they think they have to achieve perfection and your videos encourage people to just have fun and try new things. I bought the giant sketchbook because of your review and I try to channel my inner Sandi with fun experimentation. yep, I know its shocking to people that us artists actually do need to sketch and practice, not everything is going to look 'perfect' and that we sometimes just want to create to capture a feeling/moment without worrying about creating a 'perfect' piece

Yes! Yes! Yes! You said it perfect! I also wanted to add that sometimes the “practice “ pieces turns out better. I let my SIL go through my paintings and she picked out several “practice “ pieces. I told her that those weren’t finished pieces. She said “I love these, I want these!” It made me relook at my scrap pile.
