When your thumb comes over the neck like that, it’s called a “bear grip” and is not always the most optimal way to play anyway. Depends on the chords. But, it’s totally fine for you to place your thumb in the center behind the frets you’re playing. Usually you want the thumb to give support to your index finger so place behind whatever fret your index finger is on. Hope this helps!
