The INSCAPE project (INcrease in CArbon Sequestration in the Emilian-Apennines forests) is part of the Rural Development Program of Emilia-Romagna, whose main objectives include the promotion of knowledge transfer and innovation in the agricultural and forestry sector and in rural areas within a framework of sustainable development.
In particular, INSCAPE is a project aimed at innovating forest management methods and answering to the increasing need to research and experiment innovative and environmentally sustainable methodologies.
Current methods of forest exploitation, in fact, both reduce the stock of organic carbon and release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, which represents one of the main causes underlying the rapid temperature increase that has been recorded in recent decades.
Forests’ ability to sequester and store carbon can be increased by improving forest management methods based on plant capacity to sequester carbon dioxide through photosynthesis and transform it into organic matter. In this way, a wise management of the territory and of forest resources can contribute to mitigating the greenhouse effect and climate change.
The INSCAPE project involves numerous local partners, who are working in the beech forests of the Northern Apennines to innovate forest management methods and make them more sustainable.
