LITERALLY. The first season is still one of my most favorite anime to this date.

My working hypothesis is guns. The anime has a very thriller esque aesthetic and theme, but the main characters are still kids, and they would've been wielding firearms for the majority of the arc that was supposed to happen right after the escape arc, so my hypothesis is that there were some decisions made that regarded how well it would've been viewed by the public if the main characters who are children would be using guns a lot. The demons are the bad guys, so it makes sense for them to be over the top evil and cruel, but if the kid main characters were using guns rather than just their wits, it might not go over well in certain parts of the world, paryicularly in the US. I still think that they should've adapted the manga more accurately, but I believe a possible reason for why they didn't is that they just didn't want to portray kids with guns for a multitude of reasons
