@honda350r I would have to agree that soldered joints are better, and maybe Honda you have seen so many fail because they were not properly prepped. By that I mean you definitely need to be soldering to very clean copper, and the liquid flux must be applied to the copper strands, otherwise the solder will just not stick like water beads up on freshly waxed paint. Crimping only gives you direct contact with strands on the outer perimeter, and then indirect contact with the inners.
@jusb10666 жыл бұрын
soldering failure isnt the connector but the wire where the wire/solder mix ends, it is weakend, there have been mechanical tests and soldered wire is weaker at that point than non soldered in a crimped connector
@Amopower12 жыл бұрын
@honda350r What crimp-on terminals do you recommend then?
@jusb10666 жыл бұрын
use the ones that you have the matching hydraulic crimping tool to match, which itself is a few hundred bucks, if you do a lot of terminals crimp is better, solder is cheap if you only do it now and again, but it is NOT better to solder, its just better than a poor crimp, nothing beats a pro crimp

Although cable to terminal retention may be not so great as terminal is not compressed, this method will stay electronically stable for the rest of vehicle life. Just want to make sure when installing that no tension is applied to the cable.
@kafklatsch31985 ай бұрын
I know your comment is 6 years ago... but I roughen the inside of the terminal with a sharp edged object leaving diagonal and horizontal grooves and the solder bond becomes as strong a a crimp

It all depends of the design of terminal - Solder terminals should be soldered, crimp terminals should be crimped, simple. You can do ot the opposite way but there is a greater chance of failure! Crimping is easy - if you have the correct tooling, soldering is easy of you have the correct equipment and you keep to the rules! Why try and invent difficulties...
@cruisingthethaiway68817 жыл бұрын
This video should note that this method is not acceptable in any industry. As noted at the beginning, it's only an alternative for those who do not have the appropriate crimp tool. Solder should never be used in high amperage connections.

spot on nor easter, soldering is cheap and easy, but not as good as proper crimped, soldering wires isnt used in any industry now as it fatigues the wires, wires goingto terminals have crimped on shoelace terminals and they dont tin the ends either

So let me get this straight, there is no need for expensive tools for this job? I don't need any expensive crimping tools, just a vise, a blow torch and a heat gun? Great... or you know, whatever.
@FullForce19726 жыл бұрын
Yes all you need is solder. No need to crimp. This is superior to crimping. Its a 100% wire to connector bond, but you do "whatever" you want.
@jusb10666 жыл бұрын
actually a proper crimper (which would be a large hydraulic at this size) is far better, first, its so tight it pushes out air and the copper bonds on a molecule level, second, the problem with solder is where the solder ends, (it creeps up the wire) is a weaken fatigue prone problem, it always breaks there, wire is weakend by soldering. thus crimping is superior but needs the real tools, not just a cheap pressed tool
@Pinkielover4 жыл бұрын
never solder battery terminal cables... always hydraulic crimp them only
@honda350r12 жыл бұрын
@12th88 I stand with my comment ! I have been in the business for 26+ years and have seen so many failures it is not funny ! Your twisted wire comparison is apples to oranges ! Solder works great on many applications but not solely for a large high amp connector ! You must always have a mechanical connection first then if you wish to waste your time you can solder it .

the insulation is NOT supposed to make contact with the connector....there should be room between them to allow for flex. If the cable is bent near the connector the insulation will push on the connector and either fray, and can loosen or even push the connector off

first. I would not consider the terminal 'secure in a vice' unless the vice was secure to begin with. you my friend have used the incorrect flux. Resin cored solder is required for this application as the acid will have a negative effect on the wires where the flux is trapped under the shrink. finally, given that this vid is about 'soldering' I'm not going to say anything 'negative' in relation to your mispronunciation of the word.

Why do Americans call solder "sarder"? The rest of the english speaking world says it like it's spelt.
@kinglangren3 жыл бұрын
Because our language makes no sense even to us
@robtemple34453 жыл бұрын
We don't say "sarder", we say "sawder". In the states the "L" is silent in "solder". Since we're on the subject, why do Britt's & Aussies say "alluminium", when it's spelled "alluminum"? 😆
@mattnbin3 жыл бұрын
@@robtemple3445 Depends on your point of view. I was spelling phonetically from an Aussie perspective. That is how it sounds to us. You mention the silent L, but that does not explain the ignoring of the second letter: o. So going by your explanation therefore you should be pronouncing it soder , not sawder. As to the aluminium vs aluminum issue ... “The American Chemical Society (ACS) officially adopted aluminum in 1925, but in 1990 The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) accepted aluminium as the international standard. And so we land today: with aluminum used by the English speakers of North America, and aluminium used everywhere else.” From a google search.
