In this video I talk about the good things and maybe not so good things about attending an online software engineering school like Launch School. I've been in Launch School for almost 2 1/2 years now so I know plenty about it and how it all works. Everything I talk about is coming from my own personal experience and just facts about what type of school Launch School is. Hope you find it informative!

Thanks Felicia for sharing your experience with Launch School. I think you really hit the nail on the head with your emphasis on the school's approach being on mastering the fundamentals of software engineering. I've been reading many articles lately by software engineers and engineering manages in the industry who've talked about how bootcamps have increased the supply of developers, who are now competing directly for jobs with new grads coming out of colleges with their 4-year, expensive degrees. The unfortunate thing in the current state of the tech market is that, companies have to figure how to filter through the engineers who really know SWE and CS in-depth, down to the fundamentals, as opposed to those who just learn it at a surface level and master a tech stack. There's a flip side to this as well, where developers who study at subpar bootcamps end up getting into jobs they feel they can't really grow in because they lack important fundamentals required on the job to level up as a software engineer. I feel that a first-principles school like Launch School addresses that issue very well. Thanks again for the transparent review!

Thanks so much for your videos that detail the LauchSchool experience! I've been working the past five years in a medical laboratory setting and I'm getting tired of it. For the past two years, I've been trying to study computer programming in the hopes of switching careers someday. I've studied Java, Python and now recently, want to study web development. I've been fumbling around, not knowing what to study, so LaunchSchool seems like a perfect fit for me. For anyone reading this thinking that it's too late or you've wasted too much time, it never is too late! I've literally been trying to study for two years and have basically gotten no where, haha. Thank you for your videos!

Oh wow! If you're able to make the jump, I'd say go for it! You don't want to spend your life being miserable :( try out the prep course if you can/want and reach out to me if you want at LS! I'm pretty sure it'll be better than what's out there because I did the same thing, fumbling for a while until I found LS and realized that it was miles above everything else. Hope it goes well! Thank you for watching 🤩😁

Thanks for this video! I have a family and I'm in the process of transitioning into software engineering while being a full time nurse. I love the fact that LS is mastery based. The fact that you need and A+ to progress is fantastic and intimidating at the same time. I can't wait to start. Super motivated.

Yay this makes me so happy! I'm glad this video helped make the process either easier, or at least confirmed your decision! It will be so easy to have LS work around your parenting and nursing schedule. Good luck and I'll see you around Launch School!

I think you sold me. I did a bootcamp and got a job but I don't feel confident in what I know.

As a current student, I think you provided a nice and balanced perspective! I really appreciate the pause feature along. I had attended an online bootcamp before and I found out pretty quickly that the quality was lacking, so I quit the program. Guess what? I had only been there 2 or 3 weeks and still owed them $1000! For what amounted to material that I could have bought for $20 or $30!

Thank you so much for your kind words!! I'm sorry that happened to you :( It's crazy how that's allowed to happen. I was very afraid to attend to a bootcamp for this reason: lack of quality content and the cost. I'm thankful for LS because you can quit anytime and payments automatically stop!

Hi 👋, I have a question, I know launch school is a mastery based learning and I know it’s a takes 1-2 years to complete it is that typical with putting in 40 hours a week? I think I saw a video saying it’s been about 2.5 years for you and was wondering if that’s going at a full time pace? Thank you 🙏

I did the Thinkful bootcamp (mediocre experience, it was okay) and have been working as a frontend for a year but not feeling like I'm confident enough in programming fundamentals. There's a lack of senior dev experience at my company to learn from, so I'm thinking of doing launch school on the side to get some mentorship from more senior developers. I like their mastery-based pedagogy. Did you meet anyone in a similar situation when you were doing launch school?

Yeah! I've met loads of people who had previously done a bootcamp and found the whole experience lacking. There's lot of people who pop up from time to time on the school channels to introduce themselves and they talk about how they are struggling with the bootcamp their in and want to learn the fundamentals and that's why they're currently at Launch School, or they say they are already working devs who feel that they want to advance and find better opportunities within the field but cannot learn the fundamentals through their current job and fellow employees. I would definitely check out the prep course if you want to see what LS is about! Once you join you'll probably meet these people and learn from them :)

What was your daily/weekly study schedule like?
@feliciabacon9923
@feliciabacon9923 2 жыл бұрын
For me, I try to study every day between 4-6 hours. i don't have a certain time to do it, just whenever I can because I'm the type of person that can study for 2 hours and then go do something completely different for another few, so I break up. In a typical week, that would mean about 25-30 hours, if I can manage. Preparing for assessments is different, I don't study in terms of hours per day but I section off things and say (with my study guide in hand), today I want to finish lesson 3 -- and that includes being able to explain every concept discussed in lesson 3, with examples for each, that explain to precision what is happening. Then i'll try to share these with someone or talk about the concept to make sure that I can also talk about it coherently. Then the next day I repeat with the next lesson or if I don't finish the days work before, then I finish that then move on!
